Talking Unlimited bandwidth from next year

Union Information and Communication Minister Dayananidhi Maran today said the Centre would “rewrite” the broadband policy, bidding adieu to 256 kbps speed limit and provide unlimited speed in January next.

Speaking after inaugurating Ericsson’s new research and development facility here, Mr Maran said as the country was moving towards an era of unlimited bandwidth, the policy was set for a major overhaul.

He said BSNL and MTNL were working on aggressive schemes to offer new bandwidth and unveil the same in January next.

“This will mean goodbye to the present 256 Kbps speed,” he said.

Mr Maran said while increasing the bandwidth, the department also wanted to increase the penetration of personal computers, which was still below the desired level.

By the year 2010, 500 million people in the country would be connected through either landlines or mobile, he said.

The DoT had drawn up massive plans to provide mobile connectivity in the rural areas, by setting up towers, using the universal service obligation fund of Rs 7000 crore, Mr Maran said.

Looks like Bsnl broadband is going to grow by leaps and bounds and leave all the competetors like sify, Reliance, Airtel broadband far behind with this unlimited bandwidth deal.

Here is a related news :
BSNL to offer broadband connectivity upto 2 mbps

actually BSNL has been offering broadband speed upto 1 mbps .
so the existing 256kbps minimum speed may be doubled (512kbps) .

now what is the use of this double speed if the data limits remain
the same (0.4 GB for Rs 250 and 1 GB for Rs 500) - perhaps the
unlimited broadband users may get benifit from this double speed ...

    Hi,

Actually the data limits are also being increased .

"Besides, the downloading limits under the company's home 250 and business 700 plans have been enhanced to one GB and four GB from 400 MB and two MB, respectively."

The speeds are music to my ears, but what I am pretty concerned about is the silence about whether the 256kpbs Unlimited plan will continue in its new avatar. 1 or 2 mbps Unlimited is pure heaven for the time being, does not really matter how much they want to charge, either continue with Rs900 or jack it up too.
Is there any info on this?

^ The unlimited dataone plans should remain
with 1 or 2 mbps speed . No confirmed details
    are available yet ...

It seems BSNL will automatically upgrade the 256 kbps connections to 1 or 2 MB and we dont need to anything further.

I also feel the monthly rates will remain same but rest time will tell

Looks like a good move but details are being withheld by BSNL website for unknown reasons about broadband upgrades.

I see this only in Maran-fridndly news papers like The Hindu, Express etc...but BSNL website itself is refusing talk about broadband plans on 2 Mpbs for existing customers.

If this is true as a Unlimited 256 Kpbs customer I will definitely benefit. More over, I have paid yearly subscription for which I received nearly 2 months of subscription as discount plus cheaper wireless router compared to Airtel and other providers.

If proposed plan really be implemented I will be more than just happy!

Though this is a big step in the right direction , i'm not sure how these people are going to overcome this data transfer limit which is just stupid. Now i understand that giving unlimited plans to all users is not feasible but there must be some common sense when it comes to imposing such limits.

These data limits have been the primary season why i didn't opt for mtnl 590 NU plan. 1 Gb is way too less if you surf for an average of 3 hours a day. No wonder isps like exatt are cashing in on new customers with plans like 256 kbps with a 10 GB limit and that too for 450 Rs per month.

    Mtnl/Bsnl should be looking at having a cap not less than 5 GB for plans which cost 400 Rs upwards.These people assume that they are only three types of users ;
type 1 : who just chat and check email ,
type 2 : who only use the net in the night and on holidays,
    type 3 : who don't have internet.

What about really heavy users and people who browse a lot and don't download much ? They simply need to come up with unlimited plans which imo will give them a real penetration. Without the unlimited plans this 2 mbps thing can be summed up in this way ,
( speed !!!) ... ( no use due to the download limit )

    Very true
If these limits are still gonna be there its no use coz for browsing there will be no visible difference atall coz tim taken to load an average page will not vary that much between a 256kbps connection and a 2meg connection they will feel the same.
The only difference which will show up is the speed at which you will be able to download and thats something which is gonna drill a hole in your pocket so ts not time to celebrate yet

    Are you kidding?

    - Try loading a more than 10 minute YouTube video page with 256kbps and 2mbps. You'll see the "visible difference". Youtube wont even play the video without buffering on that line

    - Or open 3 tabs of any photo blog/flick. You'll see how a 256kbps line will be bottleneck'd when a 2mbps will load at 100% within a few seconds.

This is apart from the using apps like Google Earth. So download speed is NOT the only thing that a 2mbps connection is worthy for.

I guess you missed the bit where I said "average page"

I have a 10mbps connection back home in UK and an 18meg connection and I dont see any noticable difference in browsing as compared to this sify 256kbps connection I am using in Delhi these days.

Yes you are correct when you say about youtube video page.

I think BSNL have scored a massive own goal here. The download limits should have been increased 5 times as opposed to the present 2.5. Secondly whoever came up with the timings for night unlimited is completely out of his mind. I find it ridiculous that mtnl/bsnl are banking on this upgradation of speed as their USP to reach out to the people when clearly more important issues have simply not been addressed.

I was so excited about this whole thing and had planned to dump my existing exatt connection for mtnl but my only option now is Airtel , subject to it's availability in our area.

Unless it was necessary i wouldn't be coming back here if i was having a 10 mbps connection.

Btw does your isp pull people up for downloading too much ? I have chat friends in the U.S who have experienced this shite.

Yea its the same with Uk isp's aswell its just a few like blueyonder.co.uk that they dont have a problem. My upload speed on that 10mbps connection is just 384kbps so there is only so much you can do with it.

There is a new isp bethere.co.uk who have 24meg connection with a good upload speed but they are not in my area yet

suppose u have plan 500 and u want to DL anything big then u have to wait until 2 am morning LOOOOOOOOL...
so there r no difference between old and new plan...
BSNL just planing to catch up some new customer who dunno anything about that.... just they ill see 2mbps .... yaaaaa that's great ... so they ill take that..

so guyz always remember that custormer's r losser at every point of view...

that's all i have to say.....

^ The new thing is that downloading speed varies from
256 kbps to 2 mbps and data limits are increased for all
plans . Actually BSNL news says that the rates are
slashed - but it is just a strategy to attract new users .

we are unhappy because the Unlimited plans have no
speed increase . They deserve atleast 512kbps speed .

Both BSNL and MTNL appears to be discouraging the
unlimited users . perhaps they are aware of downloading
habits of the unlimited connection users ...

    Wink

    yea u r absolutly right...
Take a look about this calculation...
suppose u have 500 plan.. and u strat download....
    as old plan..
    at 256kbps-->100mb-->download time 1 hr

    now look at new plan..
at 2mbps-->100mb-->download time 5 mins LOOL

And about 900 and 900 plus connection holder... BSNL give them a BIG GHANTA... hihi
