Pros
Maximum reach, low tariff, cheap hardware, low installation charges
Cons
Customer care virtually do not exist, line problems. Frequent disconnections
I live in a village. For months, I have fancied about getting a high speed connection. For pretty long time, I used to manage with snail fast dial up connection. Similar to rediff.com's advertisement, I used to wait for long time after clicking the inbox's link. It was a joyful moment when at last I got a broadband connection. Let us check some merits and demerits of BSNL Broadband.
First things first. For any connection, we need an infrastructure. There should be a cable to your home to get a broadband connection. Luckily I had a land line at my home. BSNL has a very good reach.
Next we need to think about the installation time. This is an area where BSNL lacks a bit. They normally take infinite time to give a connection after filing an application. I got it after 1.5 months of waiting.
Once they process your application, next come the hardware and financial factor. BSNL supplies Type I and Type II modems at a comparatively low costs. It is 1000 + tax for Type I and 1600 + tax for Type II. If you take it on rent, you can get it for Rs. 50 and Rs.80 respectively.
Initially my plan was Home 250. It had 256 Kbps at that time. Soon I got a huge bill as my system was infected (at least that is what they say). It is a common error on BSNL side. Limited plan was always haunted by huge bills. Then I moved to UL 750 which gives me peace of mind for Rs. 750 per month.
Next is the support from BSNL technical people. I had problem with my port in the exchange. First time, they took 15 days to attend my call. Then I became wiser and used to talk to higher authorities. It helped me get my issue solved fast. The golden rule with BSNL is proper follow ups can do magic.
Plan change is also an issue with BSNL. They have crude laws and procedure for plan change. Hope they will improve with time.
