Default BSNL Night Unlimited - Layman's review

    Pros

2 Mbps unlimited, budget plan, Free of cost, popular

    Cons

Late time problems, Chance of a huge bill, inappropriate metering system

Night unlimited plans are undoubtedly the best plan available in India. Whose else will 2 Mbps Unlimited ? I agree that the 2 - 8 am slot is a bit tougher for beginners to manage. But if you are a member of a forum like Indiabroadband.net, there is very less you need to worry about. A few tips and tricks will give you 2 Mbps unlimited for 6 hours.

Must have for Night unlimited Users

    http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...oad-night.html

There is a little hiccup here. The 2-8 slot is not easy to manage. To get a cost free 6 hours, you need to reboot your modem a little after 2.00 am and a little before 8.00 am. The aim to make the start and end times falls in the 2 - 8 slot. BSNL has been trying very hard to makeup this error. If you start downloading at 2.00 am but was connected to net from say 12.00 am, your start time will be considered 12.00 am. Same is the case with the end time. If you browser until 8.05 am, you may think that only 5 minutes usage is chargeable. But actually you will charged for the whole night usage as the end time does not fall in the 2 -8 slot. This makes it important to reboot the modem at the specified time. The link above has methods using which you can automate the process.

Wait, don't get the wrong impression. Even after the metering issue, it is the most popular plan available. You can download as much as you can. You won't believe that there are users who download as much as 75 GB per month using this plan. BSNL is available in every nook and corner. Hence it is the best plan. Night unlimited plans are compared with Plans from other ISPs.Still surprisingly there is not one plan which offer similar mileage to the user.

Another advantage is you can even wake up at 5.00 am download as much as you can at 2 Mbps speed till 8.00 am. BSNL has made serious attempts to correct the meter issue. It was once corrected also. But due to some bug in the system it was cancelled. Hope BSNL will soon fix the issue. Hope this was some useful information to you. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

It is known fact that bsnl lack quality techies, at least they could have consulted someone to fix this session meter bug.

Thanks Deep. People really don't know that it is a wonderful plan if the metering issue is fixed. Those who are a member of IBF will never face a hassle with this plan. But BSNL should really do something on the metering issue.

    ---------------

Let us check a few night unlimited plans which are popular.

    Home 500

Speed - Up to 2 Mbps
    Monthly rent - Rs. 500
    Bandwidth / month - 2.5 GB

    Home 500 C

Speed - Up to 2 Mbps
    Monthly rent - Rs. 500
    Bandwidth / month - 1.5 GB

No need to pay telephone rent

    Home 500 C +

Speed - Up to 2 Mbps
    Monthly rent - Rs. 600
    Bandwidth / month - 2.5 GB

No need to pay telephone rent

    Home 1000

    Speed - 384 Kbps to 2 Mbps
    Monthly rent - Rs. 1000
    Bandwidth / month - 5 GB

    Home 1800

    Speed - 512 kbps to 2 Mbps
    Monthly rent - Rs.1800
    Bandwidth / month - 10 GB

    Home 3300

    Speed - 2 Mbps
    Monthly rent - Rs. 330
    Bandwidth / month - 20 GB

If you choose 500 C and you are a government employee, you will be charged only Rs. 400 + rent for one month. Including phone rental and Broadband rent. This is because of the 20 % discount for government employees of rental and usage.

I would like to add a revised 500c+ plan, a new plan BB FN 500 is introduced, where in the free calls from 500c+ are removed and the limit remains same at 2.5GB. More over you'll be save Rs.100 if you don't use telephone other than for Broadband.

500C+ is retained but name is changed to BBG FN Combo 600, the new BB FN 500 co-exists with it.

Looks like I can't post links until my posts cross 15, anyways check BSNL site for the new revised plans

    Hey Nice Info guys.
Some where I found out that the BB metering Server of BSNL updates for every 30 min or so. Thats why even Night free is also charged for some minutes.

    This is also a trick
If you start @ 07:45, u can get up to 08:15 in Night unlimited ie free-no meter
If you start @01:45 u will be charged up to 02:15 -Metered

Hi. Nice to see you. I switched to ULF 1100. So higher speeds are always there.

All the best for your exams.

thanks dilip.........................By the by, ULF 1100 scheme goes as 2MBps upto 10GB and 256Kbps beyond 10 GB right? But if that is so, then very soon ur speed will drop down to 256 KBps right? Is that happening for u or ur able to restrict urself to 10GB? Because restricting to 10GB FUP will be very difficult especially in my case as it might even go upto 12GB sometimes.

But since BSNL has doubled the speeds till Apr 30th, is the drop down speed 512 KBps for this ULF 1100 or the same 256KBps as specified?

10 GB is not enough for me. I already crossed 10 GB and back on 256 Kbps. But enjoyed 10 GB limit. Download some movies and software within half an hour. I am happy with the plan.

    Default Choosing Night Umlimited option..

I am trying to decide between the plans -

    1. BBG FN 500
    2. BBG FN Combo 600
    3. BB Home Combo ULF 1100

For the first two night unlimited plan it says upto 2Mbps. What does upto mean here. During daytime what type of speed will I get, will it be 256 kbps, or it will vary according to demand. Will I get assured 2Mbps at nighttime.

Secondly, for BBG FN 500, does it mean I do not need to take a land call facility. I do not have specific need for that.

If the speed falls drastically on night plans I would prefer to go for BB Home Combo ULF 1100 although it is more expensive.

I am using ULF 1100. Getting a speed of around 210 KBps till 10 GB. Up to 2 Mbps means you may not get full speed in some area. Still any where around 150 KBps is good.

BBG FN 500 does not have any free calls. It will be according your existing plan. If you do not want to pay telephone rent, use any combo plan.
You will get around 200 Kbps in the day time. But there are reports a slight speed drop during Night unlimited period. Hope this helps.

    Thanks Dilip...
So my shortlist now is down to
    1. BBG FN Combo 600 - for not paying any telephone rental
    2. BB Home Combo ULF 1100

However one question which I still have doubt on is for the night plans like BBG FN Combo 600, what is the speed I would get during daytime on those plans, since they say upto 2 Mbps. Will it be approaching 2 Mbps or much closer to the base 256 kbps during daytime.
If you could clarify that from your experience that would be of great help.

I am assuming when you say, you get 210 KBps, you mean Bytes and not bits, so the speed for 1100 plan is closer to 2 Mbps as BSNl says.

Yes. It is around 210 Kilo Bytes per second. My friends who use Home 500 plans report the speed as 150 -200 KiloBytes per second on day time. It is much higher than 256 kilo bits per second. Hope it is clear now.

Thanks Dilip, that makes night plans attractive as well ...
The paranoia stems for the fact some of the broadband vendors use upto to sell there service, but speed are nowhere closer to what is advertised due to the 'upto' factor.

MTNL (which I have used) and BSNL seem to be best in that regard.

bsnl broadband really seems the only sensible choice for anyone that uses the internet a lot (outside of delhi/mumbai where mtnl is available)

    Having no FUP is *HUGE*.

I think the chance of overbilling is exaggerated since it only happens if you are either careless or stupid.

now if only bsnl fixed their terrible latency and packet loss/disconnect issues and sub-par routing to foreign servers ....

Yes. As long as your download sessions falls in 2 - 8 slot, nothing to worry.

    Default The speed is great - I have - 'Home 500 C +'

First of all... I am really Thankful to this forum for great tips and help that I had initially for setting up my Net connection. - And ofcourse for all of those who are getting the similar benefits.

Just writing this to indicate with great pleasure and Joy...

I am getting average 230KBps download speed with the torrent

I have 'Home 500 C +' plan and staying in Bharuch, Gujarat.

The night Unlimited gives me daily 4.8GB download... so monthly it goes nearly 130GB.

Initially I spent 1-2 days to figure out the best ways to setup the Automated download for the night and at the end the whole configuration worked great.

This are the main steps of my configuration...

    1. Bridge connection - instead of PPPoE
    2. Batch files to connect and disconnect the net
    3. 'Auto Power on and Shutdown' Software from Torrent - to run the batch files at particular time.
    4. IDM to download Standard files with scheduler on
    5. uTorrent - with scheduler on

(Setup for first two step is in this forum... Given in good details)
    --------

Everything works Perfect.... I am even leaving the computer on for 8-9 days when I am away... at such times (or all the time) keep the Schedule on 'Auto Power on and Shutdown' Software for hibernating and restarting the computer at desired time..

'Auto Power on and Shutdown' Software - is very well functioned and works great for this purpose... (I also tried some other - but this one worked best)

    Again Thanks...

    1. Please mention, modem - model and make

    2. Which mode do you use ? PPPoE or Bridge ?

    3. If possible, try a friend's modem and check whether the modem is faulty. You can get a replacement if it is within the guarantee period.

    4. Try resetting the modem to factory settings and reconfigure it.
