Default Not acquiring IP address, cannot access modem page

My net connection was down for two days. Today when it started, the icon in the system tray keeps trying to acquire an IP address for a while every time I start the modem, and finally it says that this connection has limited or no connectivity. I can use the internet normally though.

I went to Network Connections and tried the repair option, but nothing happens. In TCP/IP properties, both IP address and DNS servers are set to be obtained automatically, this is how it has been all this time.

When I tried to open 192.168.1.1 in the browser, it doesn't open (in any of the browsers). I did an ipconfig /all, and this is what it shows:

    Windows IP configuration:
    Host name - XXX
    Primary DNS Suffix - nothing
    Node type - Unknown
    IP Routing Enabled - No
    WINS Proxy Enabled - No

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix - nothing
    Description - (adapter name)
    Physical address - (address)
    Dhcp enabled - Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled - Yes
IP address - 59.95.XXX.XXX (keeps changing)
    Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.255
Default gateway - same as IP address
    DNS Servers - 61.1.96.69 and 218.248.240.208
    NetBIOS over Tcpip - disabled

I've reset the modem two to three times today by pressing the reset switch at the back. Finally what I did was enter the IP address and DNS servers manually in the TCP/IP properties, the ones that the BSNL guy gave me a long time back. They are:
    IP address - 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway - 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers:
    Preferred: 192.168.1.1
    Alternate: none

This way I was able to access the modem page. Earlier, when the internet started working, the connection was breaking every fifteen seconds, then I went to the modem page and set the options to Glite and Bitswap enabled (the modem is Huawei MT882), and now the continuous reconnection problem has gone.

But as soon as I try to set it to obtain the address automatically, the problem starts. So what exactly has gone wrong. Secondly, is it alright to enter the IP address and all manually - does it put you at risk in any way?

    Thanks.

    Appears you are using "Dialer"mode
The Ip address you enter 192.168.1.x ( x= 3 to 254)etc are only for LAN
If you have only one computer, there is no harm in entering details in TCP/IP page.
    TRY google and opendns
    8.8.8.8 and 208.67.220.220

    http://checkip.dyndns.com/
This will be different everytime you start the modem..

Hello Essbebe. I am using dialer mode. Do I need to go to the modem page and enabled DHCP server? What would you recommend?

In your modem the DHCP is not enable thats why your LAN network not getting the IP address automatically from your modem.

Enter manually IP address to your network card does not face any security issue.

I set the IP address in Network Connections > Local Area Connection, accessed the modem page, and enabled the DHCP server, though in the WAN settings type it still reads: Connection Type - Pure Bridged, not DHCP.

Also entered the following settings in the firewall section, which I found from a webpage:
    Black List Status - Enabled
    Block Duration - 10 minutes
Use Attack Protection, Use DOS Protection - both Allow
Max Tcp Open Handshaking Count - 100
    Max ICMP Count - 2
    Max Host Count - 2

I've removed the IP address from the Local Area Connection, but now it doesn't search for an IP address; it says: IP address - 192.168.1.2, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0, Assigned by DHCP.

The problem was with the Local Area Connection trying to acquire an IP address and not being able to. That is now solved, when I enabled the DHCP server. So there's nothing really that I want to do, I just made the last post to say what I did and that now the Local Area Connection doesn't search for an IP address every time.

His DHCP was not enable in his router thats why he dont get the auto assign IP address but not for the crappy network manager. Your Ubuntu also unable to auto assign IP address if the DHCP server not present at the network.
I am not agree with you that windows network manager is crappy.

    @superprash2003
Why should you enable DHCP in router for a single computer ?
    usual instruction is to
    enter 192.168.10
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.1.1
Access modem and change settings for "Bridged' or "
    Always ON" MODE. etc
you should get connected to internet.
Enabling DHCP is suggested for more than one system in use or for a LAN setup , or for WIFI mode.

All right, I have re-configured it according to the way you said. I went to the site you mentioned earlier:

The little I know about Dataone Broadband Services offered by BSNL

I've set the TCP/IP settings in Local Area Connection to:
    IP address: 192.168.1.100
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

I've set the DNS servers to the ones given on that page, the BSNL ones, but maybe I'll switch to OpenDNS.

The only difference is, the settings on that page were for PPP, I've let it remain "RFC2684Bridged" and Connection Type to "Pure Bridged", VPI/VCI to "0 / 35" and Encap. to "LLC" (whatever all this is).

I had a quick look at the Calcutta Telephones site, but I couldn't find post no. 6, item no. 14.

    Thanks.
