Enable DHCP in the modem and try.

    Use PPPoE mode .............
You can have security with with modem but you cannot dial a connection from mobile so it is required to have enabled PPPoE mode.

i registered for wifi in my college. but when i met the guy(incharge of wifi) to get id and password. he said that wifi is not supported by phones only for laptops. what the hell. i argued with him for some time and he said that even iphones are facing wifi problems.
i asked him what encryption they use. he said tkip. i said i use the same(tkip) at home with bsnl and wifi works fine. he said that he need to install some files which could be done only in laptops. i totally don't know why some files need to be installed to access net. my phone detects my college's wifi but askes for pass just like bsnl. so i asked him to give me pass so that i could just try. he noted down my phone model(samsung corbypro) and said he'll confirm with the manufacturer and asked me to come on monday.

    @narasimhan1990
He should give the security key. ( & network name should appear in your laptop/Iphone))
( If others are able to connect their laptops in WIFI mode ask them the security key. which is common to all.
Probably he wants to add/block MAC addresses in the router . ( Authority ? is the college wifi free ?)
(in the modem router DHCP has been enabled.)
Now use it in your IPhone !!!

my friends just give their laptops to the person incharge and wait outside. he'll (presumably) install some files and give it back along with id/pass. and my friends can access wifi. to say the truth my friends(most of them) have very little knowledge and r not interested in knowing what happens or ask the person incharge what he did. it's i who teach them what to do(like portforwarding bridge pppoe mode etc) after reading forums and faqs online(which they can do it themselves but r lazy).

and they r unable to connect to wifi after they format. they need to go back to the person incharge.

what i feel is the person inchage just changes some settings in network connections and configures the wifi. but he says that he has installed some new files and asks us not to meddle with it. but i don't see any programs installed. so i think he just configures it.

ya wifi is free. i forgot to mention. i gave him my cell phone's mac address and asked him to add to the filter. but as i said he didn't listen and asked me to come on monday. i think he doesn't know the basics. he just does the routine procedure.
i think the thing he installs is just some setup file that creates a new wifi connection automatically rather that manually creating and configuring it.

In a College this kind of secrecy is unfortunate.
Show your laptop/IPhone already configured, and showing your College Wireless network Name.
he has to enter only the security key. ( may be kept secret) .
Check in a laptop of a friend
TCP/IP properties. Whether Ip address is entered say 192.168.1 xx
    or obtain automatically.
    Probably college authorities have banned
    Internet access in Cellphones.

as i said the authorities are not technically secure or advanced to ban the use of wifi in cellphones. they just don't know that's all.

as u said it's a good idea to show him the phone and request him to enter the password. i'll do it on monday. if i go tomo he might just get angry and not cooperate. he already thinks that i know more than him since i have asked many questions.

i forgot to say. i got wifi working on campus 2 weeks back. that guy said he registered my phone but it doesn't work and he gave me the password. i tried it a few times and it said authentication failed. but then when i went near the wifi hotspot it works. so the cell(corby pro) works at a close proximity say 30metres but beyond that it detects wifi but says authentication failed but it works for laptops(probably cell has poorer reception when compared to lappy). is there any other reason. anyway it's not a big problem but just want to know.

The difference is power output :
Your cell phone Tower/wifi repeater eqpt picks up your signal etc, and retransmits incoming calls .
Your WIFI router/ in college campus has (may be) limited power say 20 mW and the range also possible within a radius of 40 to 50 feet. ( "Line of sight" Omni directional )
Where it is located in your college.?
Do Laptops work in all students" hostel rooms ? area covered ?

As a college student, your posts should be concise and precise giving correct information data.
Standing at same place ( distance/height ? how far is the wifi unit from "same Place "))
closer to wifi router ( where located first floor ground floor corner room Middle room ? )

Cellphone RX/TX sensitivity will be less than Laptop's Wireless Lan Adapter.
Check in Google for tech specifications for the phone.
    Check article about wifi extender
    (Home made ) by @imrock.

ANY idea about the make/model/number of the wifi router used in your campus/hostel ?

i stand at point A. i connect using laptop. but at that same place(A) if i connect using cell it says authentication failed. thats what i meant by "same place". i didn't refer to any distance from router.

    but here's distance from router
    at ground level
till 120 feet both laptop and cell connects

100-120feet laptop connects. cell detects wifi but when trying to connect says authentication failed

120-130 feet laptop connects but cell does not detect wifi

more than 130feet both cell and laptop doesn't detect wifi

Cellphone RX/TX sensitivity will be less than Laptop's Wireless Lan Adapter.
i know this but why that authentication failed?

Signal strength too weak to authenticate!
120 feet is a reasonable distance for WIFi reception.
Did you mention the WIFI router used and Height it is located ?
Download this application Wireless Wizard for test etc.
