    Default Modem problems

Every few hours, and a lot more frequently during the morning (every 15-20 minutes or so), my internet connection dies.

All the lights on the modem are still on, but there is no internet connectivity.
If I try to reconnect; I get stuck on "dialing" or "connecting to WAN miniport" or "The username and password is invalid on this domain" - either of these errors come up immediately when trying to connect at this point.

The only way to fix this is usually to power cycle my modem - i.e. turn of the power on my modem, wait for 2 minutes, turn it back on, wait for all the lights to come back on then try to connect to BSNL.

I created a thread a few days ago but it got buried (sorry I couldn't find the relevant data at the time, here it is).

    Huawei MT841
    SNR Up/Down 16 dB /26.5 dB
    Attenuation Up/Down 7.0 dB /13.5 dB
    DSP Version D.57.2.17
    Release Date Jul 19 2005
    Operation Mode G.Dmt
    EC/FDM Mode : EC mode
    Bitswap: Enabled

    Light Status:
    Power - steady
    Link - dim but steady
    Acct - blinking rapidly
    4 - blinking
    WLAN - steady

Power specs on the back of modem - 12 V AC 1.2 A
KTec AC adapter 12V 1200 mA

When I power cycle the modem, Lights Power, 4 and WLAN come on fairly quickly; however link and acct take quite some time (2-3 minutes).

Another question, to power cycle my modem how long do i need to switch it off.

My PC & monitor are connected directly to an APC AVR-Pro UPS
I connected my modem and Cordless phone to a spike strip (extension cord), which is plugged into the UPS.

Last of all occasionally during 6am - 8am the latency to any foreign server shoots up to 500-700 ms (it's usually 300-350ms to USA). Trying to reconnect or switch to open_dns/google_dns repeatedly sometimes fixes the latency; sometimes it does nothing, and at other times the modem goes back to the unresponsive state i mentioned above.

Should I get the modem replaced ? Or is this a normal problem with BSNL modems ? In that case should I just by an ADSL modem from the market ?

    suggestion 1.
    Try "Always On" PPP/PPPoE mode.
    Modem settings seems OK.
    suggestion 2;
change dns to google 8.8.8.8 and opendns 208.67.220.220
    suggestion 3 ;
in menu any snmp enabled? disable it.

feedback if still problem. confirm LAN mode or wifi mode.
    post ipconfig /all

I switch between bsnl's dns, googledns and opendns; whichever gives lowest latenchy at the time.

I don't see anything like snmp in the control panel, should i look somewhere specific ?

I think it's in LAN mode since I'm not using any kind of wifi

    CONFIGURATION
    See the FLASH mode also.
Add to book marks if found useful.
2.You have to UNCHECK "Bridged' button
    and select PPP/PPPoE mode.
next enter UserID/PW in the wan page.
    3.
In ipconfig /all dns as selected should appear.
Also enter in modem menu (uncheck obtain DNS automaticallyand enter the data )

Is there any other solution other than switching to an always on mode ?

Also, the problem seems to happen almost always between 6am and 9am.

You have to confirm, problem was NOT SOLVED during 6AM to 9AM , by using "Always On " mode.

try to locate the Cordless Phone
Power Adapter ( if smps type) away from the computer. Also the Base Unit of cordless phone.
( what is the frequency mentioned ?)
Does this disconnection/s happen when you get incoming calls or try outgoing calls ?

The cordless phone/base is far away from the computer/modem.
the power adapter is also far away from the computer/modem.

The disconnections do not seem to have anything to do with incoming/outgoing calls (and when I do use the phone the internet works fine).

Usually what happens is usually between 6am and 9am, there is a sudden loss of internet connectivity; which is fixed by power cycling the modem.

Hmm ok, I will have to try "always on" i guess.

My only reservation with "always on" is that I use torrents/streaming media (particularly radio) a lot either late at night or early in the morning, and I don't really want to risk a spill over; and at the same time I don't want to reboot my PC multiple times every day.

If I do switch to PPoE mode, how do I go back to bridged mode ?
