    In Windows 7 goto:
    Task manager>Resonance Monitor>Network>network activity.

    End the process you do not like.

    Use a antivirus to scan your PC.

    Do you use "Safari" Browser, If then do not use it.............
    Use Opera Browser, it consumes very less data and loads pages quite fast.
    Also use ad-blockers for the browser.

    @essbebe.
    Some updates are not shown in "Applications", For that you have to end process them in running "Processes". They will have the name like "update_____" or "upd___".

    See the time of my post, I am using Home 500 c, time was going to over, so I posted the post in hurry....

    By the way , I am not the expert. But you are.......

    @manuhere88,
    More than 90% of updates are not shown in Running Application. So first check on "Show processes of all users" and then the you can able to see all the updates running like "googleupdater.exe", End process them.

    I recommend you Revo Uninstaller Software, In it you can able to stop all the softwares which are set to autostart with windows start, by that you have not to End process the applications all the time.

    Simple. Use Bitmeter and Zone alarm firewall. Bitmeter will show you if there are any background activity and Zone alarm can tell you which program is accessing net. Almost all firewalls show which program is accessing net. Find out and delete/block the process/program.
