    Default pc freezing when using bsnl broadband

    This seems to be a peculiar issue. My pc freezes up all of sudden when using the bsnl BB. I have a starcom UT300R2U modem. My pc has 1 GB ram, cor2duo processor, 80 GB HDD, realtek NIC. This issue follows me even after mutiple formats of the HDD. The BSNL guys done have clue about this problem. This happens intermittently. I have tried to check the event viewer. But event viewer doesnt have any entries when the machine freezes. Earlier, i thought the torrents were causing this. I stopped using torrents. But still issue persists. BTW am running xp sp2, have upgraded to sp3 as well. No difference. This issue is intermittent. Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    1. By "freezing up completely" do you mean that the whole computer freezes and you have to reboot, or just the connection box / browser?
    2. Which browser do you use?
    3. Maybe a hardware conflict? Did this problem coincide with the installation of any new hardware (mouse, printer, etc.)? You may want to go into control panel and look at the settings for the modem to see if any conflicts exist.
    4. Do a complete memory test.

    1. Run a scan using CA Yahoo Antispy.

    2. Post your SNR and attenuation values.

    3. Check for bad sectors in disk. You can use Tuneup Utilities.

    4. Remove unwanted programs from start up.

    By memory test I meant a check-up of your ram. Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic

    Your computer have virus, thats why it goes to freezing when using BB.
    If you want to rectifie it then format your all HDD drive you have by using the XP bootable CD and then install the Operating system. After installation of the Operating system install the Kaspersky internet security and then you can use BB. Remember dont use BB without the Internet security.

    @Indranil
    im running avast AV, and just to reiterate, i have formatted my pc multiple times & reinstalled the OS as well, so i dont think its a virus. i have used comodo FW as well, same result
    @meetdilip
    will post the SNR & attentuation values, i guess you have to take it from the router page, correct ?
    i have malwarebytes antimalware, would it still be necesary to install CA antispy ?
    i have only my avast AV running in the startup, nothing else

    Yes. To get SNR and attenuation values, type 192.168.1.1 in the browser, log in with ID and password as admin. You can find them in the menu page.

    Malwarebytes is good. But I somehow feel that CA Yahoo Antispy can give better results. Your choice.

    How do you connect your modem ? Ethernet or USB ?

    I really want to tell you that these problems were also occured with me and then I had only option to format the OS. After that all starts working fine..

    Check your PC for virus with Zone alarm or Norton Or, do a boot scan with Quick Heal.

    im on ethernet connection
    @gaggan4392
    again, i dont think its the AV, cos i have tried all the possible AVs & FWs. These are those trend micro, zone alarm, CA suite, comodo FW, sybase FW. I personally feel Norton is the worst AV around.

    There's a chance that your onboard lan/network card is defective.
    Does your connection work on any other computer?

    @dinneo
    Download ANVIR TaskManager Free
    and delete/quarantine all applications not needed ( you may keep the AV program )
    ( other than Microsoft)
    If you can do it "msconfig" Ok.
    2.Start System
    Press F7 or F8 and start in SAFE MODE with Internet connection.

    3.
    If still "Freezing"
    Press CTRL/ALT/DEL : Check Applications not running and Processes which consume CPU usage.
    4.
    Try: Download K-Meleon (slim)browser for testing purposes.
    Even IE6/or IE7 0r IE8 if available try
    5. FireFox 3.6 utilises maximum memory.
    More====.>> on your feedback.

    6. Copy/Paste this data here.
    START RUN type cmd OK
    new window
    type ipconfig /all

    7. Do Not open any browser. But open OE or Outlook and check system OK.

    @dinneo
    Only formating the drive C: and installing the OS again dose not solve the problem. The other drive D: E: if have the virus on it's file system then the virus will spread again to derive C: after installing the OS. So it's recomended to format the other drive of the HDD from the XP boot CD. Not format the other drive of HDD from running OS, it's dose not clean the virus from the file system.
    Use the Kaspersky Internet Security. It's good. I am recomended it.

    @Indranil
    I should have been more clear when i said "mutiple formats of the HDD". I have removed the existing partitions & have tried to install xp on the other partitions apart from C. Regarding, kaspersky, i will give it a shot & see how it goes.

    @meetdhilip
    here are the SNR & attenuation values
    SNR Margin - downstream = 31.5, Upstream = 33.2
    attenuation - downstream = 29.0 , Upstream = 11.4

    Your downstream attenuation is a bit high. Try once more and check the values is same. If it still like that, get your line checked by the line man.
