Default Slow browsing and slow direct download speed but fast torrents

    Hello,

Regarding the title of the topic, I've been having this problem since yesterday evening where my browsing and direct download speed suddenly got extremely slow. I normally download files using direct download around 150 KB/s and internet surfing/browsing used to be fast. But since yesterday I have been downloading files directly around 1-2.3 KB/s..so it takes about 30 minutes to download a 2MB file directly and normal browsing is EXTREMELY slow. Even with applications like flashget, DAP that I used after this slowdown I gained absolutely no speed at all in any of the downloads.

However the torrents I have been downloading are going at normal speed of 180-200 KB/s and this is really confusing me. I scanned my computer multiple times with virus scanners, anti spyware and anti malewares, used Combo fix, tried using "ipconfig/flushdns - registerdns" commands in CMD console but nothing improved the speed. Unplugged my modem several times, restarted it as well and still no improvements.

Is there really ANY solution to this? I have been trying to call ISP office and check up with tech guys. What exactly caused this? Is this a network problem? Please help!

    BSNL Broadband Home plan: 250
    Modem: DNA-A221-I

As you have checked it everything from your side, possibly, error might be due to some porting issues in DSLAM exchange. Inform it to BSNL people (if possible to you, visiting the exchange on your own would be effective rather than calling to helpline numbers as its a BSNL ). Problem might be very minor and they can fix it in a short time.

I am soon leaving to visit the local Exchange for this area. What should I ask of them tho after telling my problem? Should I ask them to change the ports of my broadband?

Why do not you give a try??
Download a file from cnet server using Flashget and Clean the cache of the browser. And then tell the result.

    1. I'm sorry but I'm a bit new to this. How exactly should I look for Statistics ADSL page to post a screenshot of it?

    2. What exactly is the control page menu and how should I access it? (unless its windows control panel thing.)

    3. I'm not sure which but if you meant by going in Network Connections>Connection Properties>Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)>Properties then:

Under general tab I selected first option which is "Obtain IP address automatically"

For second I have "Use the Following DNS server addresses" selected
    Preferred DNS server: 208.67.222.222
    Alternate DNS server: 208.67.220.220

Should I post screenshot of contents of ipconfig/alldata?

    4. Should I update the firmware or wait for now?

Sorry for so many questions, I'm not very bright when it comes to fixing net issues but I try.

Just tell that you are getting very low speed on ftp downloads as well as while browsing normally. I think you shouldn't tell them about you are getting normal speed in torrents. Whatever the speed related problem is, they first look it in porting itself. As far as my experience is concerned, just explain them issue you are facing. They will do it accordingly to fix problem.

    NO
As you are not familiar with the modem/routers , you can download it and get it updated at BSNL , if modem is in doubt.
    For that needed some data.
    1.Open 192.168.1.1
    UserId admin
    Password admin
    A menu page will open.
    Click Statistics
    Again ADSL
see data for snr attn Line rate Rate
    both Upstream downsteream
    Post the data here.

    2.
Access control page : Ensure all boxes are checked. Wait for screenshot.
    3
OK. Open dns 208.67.220.220 etc used.
    4
. FW update > Do not attempt yourself.
    http://www.semindia.in/SemIndiaSystems_DwnLoad.htm
You have to download the files from this web site and save it say in C:/My Documents/DNA update.
It will be incorporated in the router later if needed.
    5. TRY a speed test and report the result.

I tried downloading a random 2mb file from cnet using Flashget and direct download via IE 8 but both flashget and IE8 got timed out error. I tried pinging google.in using CMD console and I get "bytes=32 time=835ms" which is a whole lot of high ping there.

Go to Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test to test your ping.

And give the screenshot of the page http://192.168.1.1/lite_dslinfo_en.html username and password admin , admin.

Let it done by TCP/IP optimizer. Download it from here : http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe

Open it once downloaded, select optimal settings from options mentioned at the bottom. Apply setting, boot your system. Check if problem still persists. Note that what TCP/IP optimizer does is it uses whole the TCP/IP architecture of your machine accordingly to OS with best settings configured. But it can not solve the problem if it is by exchange side that is porting issues or likewise.

Problem is not from your side is sure now. It must be a porting issue.

Tried TCPOptimizer but no good. Still getting average of 2.90 KB/s on a 1.55 MB file and browsing is still slow.. I guess I will go visit the exchange office now in this blistering heat. Will keep you all updated on the situation after I return.

Is your browsing slow?? try to clear your browser history and restart it.
Last try, download any file from Megaupload ans tell the speed , Please stop all downloads in this try like torrents(mainly uploads)

The option you left after this is to go to exchange.

Took about 5 minutes for megaupload site to fully open. Yes, browsing is slow, it goes slow sometimes, but sometimes it goes TOO slow. Nothing normal or fast of sorts. Its been like this since yesterday evening.

Megaupload dl speed.JPG Direct dl from megaupload. Speed remains around 2-3KB/s where as it used to be 190-200 KB/s. I have no other programs active except for msn but I am idle on MSN and not talking to anyone. Also, no utorrent client is active at the moment as I am not downloading anything.

I used Internet Explorer 8, also tried FireFox but there wasn't any significant increase in download speed as it was more or less the same. I'm gonna go to the Exchange now. Wish me luck.

    @varunashiki
Check your LAN Link Act LED. Is it blinking continue when you dont browse the Internet and dont downloading the file. If the Link/Act LED on your Lan side continue blinking but you dont using the internet ( remember for this cheaking you have to log in to your BSNL ISP ) then your computer has virus which is using the bandwidth of Http protocol.

Alright, so it turns out that Exchange guys cant do anything about it. I asked them if the problem could be solved by changing ports and they said no. They said it could be from main server in Bangalore and that it'd be fine on its own. I didnt tell them that speed of my torrents are fine. All I told them was browsing and direct download are being slow as heck.

Now when I rushed back home, two tech guys from BSNL were already waiting for me. I was hoping that they'd find some fault in my line or connection but guess what? They couldnt find anything either. They first typed ping 61.1.96.69 -t in run command to check the ping with their main server here. Ping has been around 56-63ms which is pretty good. They opened websites like in[dot]yahoo[dot]com, rediff[dot]com ndtv[dot]com. All these websites opened instantly with roughly 3-5 seconds of delay - fast. Then they went to dataone[dot]in to check the download speed since I complained my browsing and dl speed are both extremely low. These are the results:

    Current Bandwidth Reading: 1.42 Mbps
    Download Rate at 182.3 KB/sec
    1458.4 kbps being the Speed.

All these results show that my connection is functioning properly. They checked my modem too and it was fine, resetted it, reconfigured it from Configure menu page. Changed my DNS and everything. I showed them the download speed from 2 different websites. 2.3 KB/s for a 1.55 MB file and 456 bytes for a 3.44 MB file. The second site was an Indian site too. I ping'ed google[dot]com and lowest ms was 869. I ping'ed some other websites like microsoft, hotmail, gmail and request got timed out on all of those. Pinged in[dot]yahoo[dot]com and I got steady 50ms. Yatra[dot]com, ndtv[dot]com. These websites gave me steady 30-50ms ping which I consider good. Even pinging yahoo[dot]com gave me 900-930ms, rediff gave me 1009ms..

So what exactly is going on? I have no problems in receiving data from the main server here, some websites work just fine during browsing but a majority of websites and whole direct download or even accelerator based downloads are way too slow. Torrents are normal. Modem is functioning properly and I dont need any firmware updates according to the tech guy. Then they decided to check whether its my system or just the connection. They established a wifi connection in their laptop and used my connection to connect it. We had same results on laptop as well: Slow download overall and Slow browsing on most of websites. So it isn't my system that has the problem.

They said there isnt anything wrong with my connection, if at all then there could be some problem at the Exchange which will be solved on its 'own'. Own? How? They said sometimes download speed becomes too low from exchange and it gets fixed on its own. And thus they asked me to wait for two days and if the problem doesnt get resolved by then on its own or something then they will put me in new plan with similar costing but upgraded network and new hardware on Monday since mine is old and I have been using it since past 2 and half years. This means I will have new modem, wiring etc.

While this isnt a logical explaination to my ears, but I guess I will have to wait and see. I doubt waiting 2 days would solve anything unless something magical happens. I have called line guys tomorrow to lay down new wires so I am doing whatever I can from my side. I don't really know what else to do as I don't even know exactly whats wrong.

utorrentspeed.JPG Just turned utorrent on to check the download speed and it took about 20 seconds for it to go from 0KB/s to 122KB/s. Granted it took me a few tries to connect to torrent.

So confused, going to grab some meal since I skipped lunch to visit exchange office. Blah.
