Default how to block access to your router from public ip?

    Today I visited
    Code:
    whatismyip.com
just to check my ip and out of curiosity I copied my own ip and pasted it on my browser's address bar and when I clicked the go button a login box popped up when I entered the username and password of my router it showed the router control page.

Prior to this I was thinking that I can access my router only through
    Code:
    192.168.1.XX
link.I didn't know it can be accessed through the publicly visible ip also.

It's bit scary for me because If I visit to a web site then the website admin can record my ip easily and if he/she is psycho one then can try access to my router.

I want to make sure that my router can only be accessed through the
    Code:
    192.168.1.XX
link only from my computer and not through the public ip.I don't want to use my router as a server. Is there any way I can do that.

My router model is nokia siemens sl2_141

Change the default User ID and Password
    ( now admin admin )
    to access modem settings.
    See under Tools.
    Worst case scenerio;
your modem settings can be tampered.
If you are on "PPP/PPPoE" mode your user Id and Password can be seen.
In case your router has been accessed/hacked and you loose Internet connection,
    RESET to factory settings.
( access round hole in bottom of unit right side )
reload the working settings you should have saved earlier to say
    C:/My Documents/ Siemens settings.

your Dynamic IP changes every time you switch on and switch off the modem.

I have changed the password from day 1. but still hacking a password is not that difficult in today's time. But the getting access to router through public IP thingy is little scary to me.There must be some way to block this.If not then Siemens people should think about it. I know if something goes wrong then I can reset the router but still getting hacked is not cool.It hurts the self respect man ouch I'll prefer to prevent it

When you go to a Hotel, they allot you a room. Next time you visit another vacant room is allotted. You may not get the same room always.
Same way when you connect to internet you are given a temporary address known as
    Dynamic IP.
    Check this here.
    http://www.ipchecking.com/
Next time you start you have shifted room !
Para two ; Hacking your computer :
Unless you have hidden funds Swiss Bank details of IPL not worth the trouble !!
There is too much paronoia about passwords here.

I have just now received a PM. the userID and PW from a member to check his portal usage account.

I have yet to change thePW BSNL allotted three years back to me. and I use a fixed same password everywhere. email messenger ibf etc.

Use Dialer Mode and even your userId and PW cannot be seen, even if your modem/router is accessed after using a super computer or by random search.! Trying all combinations of ID and PW.
Best idea use your name say niranjan reverse it
    najnarin substitute numbers for (a e i o u ) n1jn2r8n ( or you can create a random PW everyday . applications are available )
Even you may not remember it!!.
Note it down and keep in your own safe custody. Don't divulge it to anybody !

So you have to worry , not only about modem access, but others too !!!
(1)You have USERID and PW to connect to Internet
    (2) 14digit Portal ID default PW passwword to check your bb usage, check plans, change password etc.
(3 ) email Id xxxxxx @ bsnl.in if you want to use it
    (4) Usually Id admin pw admin for modem's routers.
    (5) UserId password to log here in IBF.
    (6) if having Yahoomail another set
    (7) If you do "online' banking one more
    etc.

But as long as I'm in that hotel room I'm under threat.I mean if I'm spending half an hour in a forum for that half an hour my ip is static and a lot can be done in that period. And if I'm spending 3 hours on web then I don't want keep switching my modem on and off 100 times (or keep changing my ip through any other method)

It doesn't matter whether I have stored swiss bank details of my hidden funds or anything else in my computer the point is nobody has any right to enter my protected zone and I have every right to protect my zone. You can't say only beautiful girls should be protected from rapists and not so beautiful girls should be left just like that.

Lets make one thing clear here I'm not paranoid about my internet privacy.Otherwise I wouldn't be surfing internet now.I'm using internet for quite some time and I have read 1000 policies on formulation of strong passwords but I also know there exist 2000 ways to brute force.

I'm just trying to bring forward a issue which can be a serious threat to many.It may not be a serious threat to individual users. But if some business organization is using the same router then lot of damages can be done by exploiting this.

Again thank you for your interest

You have a point there but I have no idea how to resolve this issue! Would love to hear from those who know how to deal with this problem.
I tried my own ip and it does not bring up the router login page so I guess its a router specfic issue.

If you are very much concerned, you can use Ultrasurf or Hotspot shield.

Ahh thanks essbebe I get it now

@speedy : No computer security is 100% secure so if you want 100% fool proof security I guess the only option is to stay off line and go back to the gool old paper days

A better secure way (still not 100% secure) would be to buy a VPN which is very reasonably priced starting from $10 a month with a okish bandwidth limit goes up into thousands depending upon the company you go with

Default Access of Modem / Router

just change the admin password by entering 192.168.1.1 > management so only you can access the modem & also turn on the firewall so no one else can access your router through the web......

Man I have no intention to hack anybody's computer.I love my privacy and also respect others privacy too.I don't know hacking so I can't accept your challenge and even if I knew hacking I will not hack anybody's computer. It's against my policy dude.I never said computers of all people who spent more than a hour on net get hacked. But there are phishing sites out there which collect data of their visitors to exploit.

He knows that there are 2000 ways .
yes I know. affirmative .If people can deface twitter page and can enter into pentagons computers then I guess they can crack a password. Now I am not saying that my computer is important than pentagon pc or twitter server and everybody is dying to hack my computer.I'm just saying yes there are psychos out there who are very talented but using there talent in wrong ways.

    @Parminder @hmonani @meetdilip
I'm not at all insecure about my internet security. It's never going to be 100 % safe and i know that.I guess I used the word scary in my post couple of times and that is what making everybody think that this issue is giving me sleepless nights.I brought up this issue cos I thought it can be a security loophole and something should be done about it.But if u guys disagree then just ignore the query.

    Thumbs up check attachment!

well... exactly i never used Nokia siemens router but most of router has remote management provision and firewall option.

Try to find out remote management option and make is disable in router UI, also don't forget to enable firewall if it is disabled.
