Thanks guys, for clearing this up. Atleast now I dont have to blame the Utorrent for low speeds.

This is so unfair, honestly. ISPs have bandwidth yet they want to such every penny on a broadband that chugs at 25kbps

    I find that very bemusing.

You want ISPs should give more bandwidth so that you can download pirated stuff?

Ya @justkik thats the exactly the point

On a serious note: the broadband sucks, not because I want to download or not, but because of its age-old TRAI definition we are stuck with infrastructure that is stiffling lots of creativity. My friend and I created a firefox addon which is very good but needs bandwidth like anything... not for india at all!

    Not at all.

Going back to your point ...

There are different plans. UL750+ is the basic plan for people who want to have internet with unlimited usage and thus not have issues about bills. There is UL1350+ and other plans as well. Just depends upon the budget.

Providing bandwidth is a costly business.

As just4kix said providing bandwidth is a costly business. Before criticizing the service providers, take into consideration that India is a very large country.
People say that in Finland,1 Mbps is a legal right, but the fact is that all 100% of Finland's internet population would be dwarfed in front of India's 20% of internet population itself. So it means 5 countries like Finland put together comprise of India's internet population.

Its not that Bandwith is really costly. Its greedness that makes it costly.
Many BSNL users have no other ISPs to chose from so they are forced to stick with BSNL. This had made BSNL thick skinned and ultimately they are not reducing the tarrifs.

On the other hand MTNL has got many other ISPs to compete with.
So their coasts are lower and they now dont even bother about what speed any one is getting.

Check my speed on 1mbps UL plan without FUP for 999 per month.

How else can you explain doubling of speed with no changes to connection, just other than changing a small tweak somewhere. I was earlier on Airtel's similar plan, on that though 99.99% of time the speed was 26kbps, on occasions I have got speeds in excess of 500kbps.

Where did the additional bandwidth come from? It must have been available - 24*7!
