    Question Computer downloading unnecessarily

The computer is brand new compaq machine just 3 days old having windows 7.

Today we got BSNL BB connection and till now it downloaded around 100MB of data, we are having Avast free AV installed and I have now disabled security and automatic updates. In windows 7 went to resource monitor and saw that sometimes avast is downloading but major of time the program svchost.exe is downloading something. As we have limited plan we should limit and keep a watch on daily usage the program netmonitor is not compatible with windows 7, but now im monitoring using shareplus bandwidth meter, someone advise me how to stop these downloads so that if I dont surf internet the data wont get transferred much.

Man I think you have just been hacked. Change your router and bsnl bb passwords as fast as you can.
    Thanks.

    1. Check for malware.

    2. svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
Is your hard drive/s losing memory on it?

    3. BITS is for Background Intelligent Transfer Service - to allow for updates and information to be downloaded while your network is "idle"
Just right click on My Computer -> Manage -> Services and see if Background Intelligent Transfer Service is started or running. It should be on "Manual" by default.
I would stop it and set it to manual / disabled to stop it from downloading while you are trying to spot whats causing the crap.

Use Zonealarm firewall and engage internet lock when you are not using the system. Svchost is system service and if you block it, you cannot access internet. Me too have had this problem. You can set svchost permission as ask and control when it access internet.

Run a scan using CA Yahoo Antipsy or any good spyware of your choice.

BUt i just want internet whole day I mean I want to just be online and the Mbs should be downloaded only when i wish so, like for eg, If I am online on gtalk and chatting with friends for 3 hrs then only little data should be transferred if I am using firefox to check email only that much data should be transferred, but now in this case whether I use internet or not there is data transfer going on continously zone alarm will do the purpose but will not serve my purpose of being online all day, I need some software to block certain process ...... hope you understand

    1. Tried an anti spy scan ? If not try it .

    2. How much data is consumed during one hour usage. Keep the system idle for one hour and then check the amount of usage that is download by the background program. Report here. You can use Shaplus or any other bandwidth meter to check.

    3. As I mentioned above, I too had this problem. Set svchost as ask. Allow it whenever you are connecting to internet. After the internet connection is made, deny the permission for svchost. By this way you can stay online all the time.

Please post the feedback of 1 and 2 before trying option 3.

Did you checked how much data is consumed per hour when the system is idle ? I think it won't consume much.

Simply block Avast and Windows defender process in firewall. But it is strongly recommended that you run these updates.

    1. As of today Microsoft released 7 updates for Window Defender.
    2. A new version of avast is released today-5.0.545. Even if you disable automatic updates in avast, the program checks for newer database.

    Suggestion 1:
    use NetwoRx usage monitor.
    http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/
    disconnect internet connection say from
0700 to 0800 check hourly usage.
or compare usage with internet connected
next day at BSNL usage portal.
    Suggestion 2
Watch Internet activity in Graph mode with netmeter etc. tweakdun 2.2. ( free)
    INFO
if you are on "Always On" mode some traffic is possible between modem and Dslam in Bsnl also.

You may also try NetLimiter, which is really comprehensive and contains numerous features. I think the free version would do well for your needs, it will help you identify which application or service is causing network activity. They have this beta version for Windows 7.
