Checking or keeping track of broadband usage is something that every internet user, with a limited broadband connection looks into. This thread consolidates different ways of keeping track of your BSNL broadband usage, and it also looks into some questions related to broadband usage, asked frequently by new broadband users.
1. Directly from BSNL Portal
First of all, you can check your IP address here: What Is MY IP Address?(a) For users with IP address 117.xxx.xxx.xxx: BSNL Portal
You need to enter your Portal ID (which you can get from BSNL Customer Care) and password (mostly it is 'password').
- Customers from Hyderabad, Hassan, Kodagu, Vellore, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin can use: BSNL Customer Care Portal
- Customers from Bhubaneswar, Kamrup and Balasore can use: BSNL Customer Care Portal
- Customers from Kalyan (Maharashtra) can use: BSNL Customer Care Portal
(b) For users with IP address 59.xxx.xxx.xxx:
(The following links can be accessed only from a Dataone connection)
2. From BSNL Portal through programs/utilities
(a) BSNL Broadband usage finder from ShaPlus:
- For users having IP address 59.xxx.xxx.xxx: DataOne-Bandwidth 3.1

(b) Datafox add-on for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome by Brian Fernandes
- For Mozilla Firefox: Datafox - Mozilla Firefox Add-on
- For Google Chrome: Datafox - Google Chrome Extension
3. Bandwidth Monitoring Tools
BSNL's usage portals cannot be relied upon all the time for keeping track of your usage, mainly because the portals may not available all the time, especially on the first few days of a month. So, it will be preferable for most of the broadband users with usage restrictions to keep track of their usage with some tool. Below, you can find two of the trusted and most commonly used bandwidth monitoring tools (both are free).4. Broadband Usage Alerts From BSNL (through SMS and e-mail)
(a) ShaPlus Bandwidth Meter
(b) NetWorx
Networx will provide you with a greater level of detail when compared to ShaPlus Bandwidth Meter. But, I myself have been a happy user of ShaPlus and the difference in the usage reported by ShaPlus Bandwidth Meter and BSNL, at the end of the month has differed only by around 2-8 MB.
First, register yourself at: Web Registration for Usage Alerts
Then, after your request gets approved, you can start using the services (you can find out your usage with just an SMS, and you will get usage alerts on your mobile phone and e-mail address with which you registered in the site). You can also download the Web Client and use it for keeping track of your usage.

BSNL Broadband Usage FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
1. Does BSNL record my usage for anything other than my downloads?
Ans: Yes, you are also charged for the data that you upload. Broadband users have to note that it is not only the data you 'download' that is being charged. BSNL monitors both your 'downloads' and 'uploads'. Thus the total usage recorded by BSNL is the 'total data transfer'.
2. BSNL is recording my usage very high than what I expected. I had not used internet much anytime now. Why is it so?
Ans: There might be many reasons for this.
(a) Your computer might be infected and it might be some virus that might have been 'using' your internet connection. Scan your computer with any of the free online scanners available or install, update and scan with a genuine anti-virus program. Pirated anti-virus programs may be dangerous by themselves. Also install a good firewall (preferably Comodo or ZoneAlarm).3. I am not able to access the BSNL Usage portal.
(b) Use a bandwidth meter as mentioned above and monitor your usage with it. If the reading differs a lot from what BSNL is recording, it would be better that you report this in your local exchange. Support from the exchange may vary from place-to-place. BSNL's. But, there is little (or no) chance that they will give you any exemption.
OrBSNL has not recorded my usage. Why?Ans: BSNL's usage portal is not very reliable (but there has been a slight improvement recently) since it takes some time to update the usage details. Also, BSNL portal might be unavailable during the start of a month (and sometimes at the end of a month) due to billing reasons. The portal usually gets back to being available on the 5th of every month.
4. I did not download anything from the internet. I just used my Internet Explorer (or any other browser) to load some pages and view some videos, etc. But now these fools at BSNL are saying that I downloaded more than my free limit, and I have got a huge bill now. What can I do?
Ans: All you can do is pay the bill and make sure that you don't repeat the mistake again. In simple words: the pages your browser (IE, Firefox, etc) bring to you are actually downloads you make, after requesting for the data (by typing in a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) into your web browser; for example, India Broadband Forum). And, when a request for data is made, you (your web browser) is actually uploading. If you are interested to learn more about the working of a web browser, just do a Google search.
Note: Eventhough the last FAQ might seem strange to many, it is actually a question that many of the new broadband users have been asking.
