You wanna block it in office pc, ok i don't know how smart the ppl's are there in your office but you can just block the ports.
Btw, is it a office related to pc and stuffs then probably they will unblock it![]()
IN my last company one MNC they had a tough IT policy,,,now matter how hard i tried could not get gtalk to work, they had banned all email ID,s all you can check was official emails only, and had official communicator office communicator for IM, file transfers, so felt very isolated now in this new office I have everything

You cannot stop an IT professional from accessing any website or messenger services by blocking ports or even ip addresses or using softwares specifically made for this purpose.. Most messengers run on browsers as well and you can go through any free proxy to use them or even purchase a proxy service for as little as $2 a month with 15-20GB bandwidth..
I would like to share my experience here :
I have never had a problem with employees having their messenger logged in or browsing facebook at work.. I have always been tough with targets and always kept them as real as possible. I have at one point even used skype to communicate with other staff in the same office and every one had skype enabled phones supplied by "3" in UK so they had no escape..
Use these things to your advantage and make working in the office fun for them.. Happier employees are more productive and their interaction with your customers will be better then their unhappy counterparts who have too many restrictions in place.
Instead of thinking about ways to curb use of these platforms try thinking about ways to use them to your advantage...
@Mithunsalian
Presume your are the "Boss" or " "administrator" for the LAn in your office.
Whether each person has a standalone computer with OS applications and /programs, or access them from a centralised server.
Please give details of
The BB connection you use the modem/router make/model and switches/hubs etc used and the number of computers.
Presume you have to give Internet access to all your employees.
Take this Forum for example> Only Admin and @moderator ( if allowed ) can allow access to certain settings here.
For instance @admin can allow/block any facility
( like albums recently).
Check this facility in your modem.

@essbebe How would he block yahoo messenger and gtalk using the above settings page?
Here are some of the restrictions which I have seen in my earlier company: The procedures to achieve the same I am not aware of but the policies were very strict in my earlier company.
Even if you try to save a image file to your harddisk even if it is a official file ,eg scanned picture, etc, the IT department has a software which automatically scans HDD for image files and the next day when you log on and check your email, an automatic email is in ur inbox stating "User IN0035 tried to save filename.jpg to D:\... this file comes under the image files which is restricted"
Employees dont have right to install any softwares.
Employees dont have right to google image search
All porn sites, chat sites, way2sms etc is blocked and almost all proxies are also blocked.
IT department keeps sniffing what you do online and as soon as an employee finds some loophole it is corrected.
All job sites, rrb recruitment site, etc blocked,,
All bank sites are open for netbanking..
Mostly in our company we handled confidential information so they had banned all email IDs so that we cant send company information to other persons, still I could use USB drive, the front USB drives of computer are disabled but the back 4 USB ports have to work since they need to support mouse, keyboard, hence if you want to use pen drives you can use back USB ports, this i did n successfully took out data![]()
INformation security is a very important aspect of any company and it is not possible to give employees facebook, orkut etc,, where there are many employees for internal communication many companies use their inbuilt chat programs like microsoft communicator etc,,
@admin
I have not claimed that he can do it by changing the settings in the screen shot added.@essbebe How would he block yahoo messenger and gtalk using the above settings page?
sometime back a user could not access YM and I suggested to him to try "Yahoo messenger on the web" without downloading YM!
The feedback by the thread starter is also awaited.
It is possible to block messengers, websites, content, etc. by installing a proxy server and installing Websense, NetNanny or any such content blocking software.
McAfee McShield can block programs and files also. For example, McShield can block creating of file types - so just add .exe, .avi, .mp3, .rm, .wav, etc. and no one will be able to download these files types. It can also block executing programs - just add the name to user defined exceptions. The domain admin can prevent access to the McAfee settings and also prevent users from stopping these services.
Other AV software may also be having such features.

Use Symantec's IM detection Utility. Sorry cant post the link here.. got < 15 posts.Google it!
will not block. gives a list ?
https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=32584
Yes, to block them there is Symantec's IM manager which is NOT free. though available as a trialware. But you may use the list to block the specific ports used by those applications..
