Default ***Danger***Excess usage right after the NU time ***Danger***

BSNL is using new method for Night Unlimited Time. They are starting a session at 2.00AM and ending a session at 8.00 AM.But if you are downloading in the whole 6hrs, you will be charged a high amount right after the NU time.I used to reboot my modem before 8AM earlier. But now even after rebooting I am being overcharged for the session right after the NU time (when my PC is shutted down)

How the f**k my PC can download 1GB when its shutted down?

Tell me where to complain it online as the f**king idiots are not answering phone call.I am from kerala.

Nice to see more Keralites around.... However the language can be improved a bit.....

In my experience, the BSNL people in Kerala have been very helpful... Both on phone and in person....

As Anil said, go and meet the BSNL officials personally. Talk to them nicely and politely. Your problem may be resolved.

Although you are saying that you shutdown your PC at 8 AM (and I believe you), but how are you going to prove that you did not? Let this be a lesson for future - always shut off modem before shutting off PC.

Actually all these things were automated till last month. But BSNL has done some changes to server and the whole things are collapsed.

    Earlier method :

2.00 PC wakes up from standby
2.07 Modem restarts (start of a session)
    2.10 uTorrent starts downloading.
7.50 Modem restarts (End of a session)
    7.52 PC Turns Off

This method worked for 1 year. But now bsnl started to differentiate NU time by starting a session at sharp 2.00 and ending it at 8.00.But It starts another f**king session from 8.00.Thats the issue and I am being overcharged at this session.

    Current scenario :

2.00 PC wakes up from standby
2.07 Modem restarts (start of a session)
    2.10 uTorrent starts downloading.
7.50 Modem restarts (End of a session)
    7.52 PC Turns Off
7.50 to 8.00 A small session but consumes some MB's still in NU
8.00 to end of that session (Heavily overcharged)

    Hi,

Even if modem is ON while PC is shutdown, the modem does not transfer much data ( < 5MB) even if you keep it on for hours. So, it doesn't look like there is actual data transfer from modem since NIC card is disabled when PC is shutdown/hibernated. Mostly a billing issue, but are you sure that PC actually DID shutdown???? It may happen that the scheduler goofed up and did not shut down the PC and did not close torrent. But i guess you would know if PC was ON, in the morning.

One more advice, when you are scheduling for NU, always use two different shutdown schedulers at say, 7.50 and 7.55 am or so, to shutdown, if one utility hangs up, the other can shut down the pc. If there is a billing issue on BSNL side, god help us. What more can go wrong, even if you switch off the modem too and you are charged for that!!!!? But i doubt this would be happening.

Hope few of the points mentioned help.. Anyways, full empathy with you bro. Hope it works out soon..

One more small observation. your Usage shows that modem was rebooted at 2:07 AM which is where the NUL is calculated as 0. But in the morning, there is only calculation at 8:00 AM and not at the modem reboot time which you mentioned. So, i would imply that the morning session end at 8:00AM was from BSNL side and not by your modem reboot scheduled by you. This doesn't show that there was modem reboot in the morning by your software.

You are right that day I turned off the PC before modem reboot and the modem didnt reboot.I lost my WA300G4 modem in lightning (it was easy to reboot with IE) now I am using iball baton modem and rebooting with Imrans utility. But Imrans utility isnt accurate in case of time.It reboots after 30s or so.Also my PC is shutting down sharply at decided time no probs from that side. Also my utorrent is sheduled to run 2-8 so even if the PC is on utorrent wont download anything from 8.00 AM.

Its a careless and dangerous error from BSNL side. The sesssion starts from 8.00 is making all the probs. If your modem is on in 8.00 then its done. You will be overcharged for the first session heavily.

I can prove it.As the overcharging is only in the first session from 8.00, I tried to reduce the length of that session by restarting modem right after 8.00 and it gave expected results.

2.08 Modem rebooted with Imrans utility
8.00 Session ended and start of a new session by BSNL
8.02 Modem rebootd with Imrans utility
    8.05 PC turned off

Now look at the dangerous session 8.00 - 8.02 No downloads by my PC I was watching that.still a 9 MB in that time.Longer that session higher the fake usage.

If the modem is on @ 8.00, we will be overcharged for the first session.I can simply prove that.
This is a very very dangerous thing.

I am going to meet accounts officer on monday.

Ya bro, you're right 2 mins won't take 2MB in idle mode. Maybe some problem in calculations only. Pls keep posting so that others can also know how to get it resolved.

But whenever i schedule the NUL, i prefer rather waking up at 7 am or so and make it a point to switch off the modem and shut down the pc. Or rather try to make the NUL based on your requirements rather than using EVERY NIGHT. That way, you can reduce the chances of software goofing up and you can ensure you just SWITCH IT OFF. Or rather ask someone else in the house to just switchoff the button at 8 AM...

This has happened to me too. I live in Bangalore.

After 8 am on June 5th and June 7th 2010, my BSNL data usage account showed download+upload of 971 mb and 486 mb respectively, and this has inflated my usage much beyond the provision of 2.5 GB a month!

I had scheduled my PC to shut down on both days at 7:45 am, and the downloads in fact, got completed by 7 am on both days.

I was SHOCKED, and asked myself the same question - HOW THE HELL can my PC download 1.3 GB when it's turned off?

I went to the BSNL Commercial office 2 days ago, and explained the entire situation to them. The way they reacted came as a shock to me, as they told me that they can't do anything about it. They suggested me to turn off my modem at/before 8 am everyday.

As for the data usage recorded after 8 am for those 2 days, they told me that even after you turn off your PC and your modem is still on, then the modem keeps doing handshakes with the exchange! WTF!?

I then told them that throughout the day my modem is ON (mostly), and the data usage is minimal, as I am not downloading anything. Then how in the blue hell can 1.3 GB be downloaded when the PC is actually off, and the modem was on for 3 hrs and 2 hrs on each day respectively???

I kept asking the two people I was talking to, to do something about it right now, as I won't be around when the bill comes. But they kept saying one thing and one thing only - "let your bill come; only then we'll be able to do something about it". I pleaded more to the point where I actually told them in a "no-offense" manner that "I know how slow BSNL is to react and respond to complaints". Obviously, they took offense. But they were more tolerant to the situation, and repeated that when the bill comes they'll try and adjust the excess usage bill amount.

The biggest problem is, I'll be going out of Bangalore in a week or two, and when the bill comes, I won't be around to take care of it.

I really don't wanna wait until the bill comes. What should I do?

P.S.: I wanted to post the screenshots of excess usage after 8 am on both days, but BSNL's data portal isn't opening right now for some godforsaken reason!

I went to Accounts Officer to complain on this issue. They told me that this is a technical issue and I have to complain in technical section. This case will be considered by accounts officer only after the bill.Howerver I was told to give a written complaint to accounts officer.I gave a written complaint and they provided me the numbers of techical secions and a msging format to complain.
They told me that numbers (12678,1504) will be always busy and advised me to register the complaint via SMS.

I tried the SMS way and no one contacted me.Then I started to call to 12678 and 1504.After some tries, I could contact them. They told me that my computer may be affected by virus or some thing.I told that no virus will work when the PC is turned off and this is a BSNL server error and pointed that I have been using plans with NU for 1year and no excess usage so far.I told them that all of my excess usages have come in the session starts with 8.00.Finally they told me that they have reported the complaint and will contact me soon.

Anyways I dont wanna risk in future.I have applied for plan change to BB Home Combo UL 750. 512kbps unlimited.I have the 20% discount offer so its anyway better than risky limited usage plans.

    @chunkymonkey
Please confirm your modem is not connected to a wifi router.
There is an online complaint site for Bangalore users , .
    Send a complaint.

Anyway bill will come next month only!
They suggested me to turn off my modem at/before 8 am everyday.
also at about 0155 AM! and restart at say 0205 AM
Recently some users have reported that the meter splits the
chargeable usage and free usage at 0200AM and 0800 AM. even if the modem is kept H24 on.

@ajai5777: LOL! Virus? Hahaha. Those BSNL guys are delusional and stupid! They told me the same thing about calling 1504 and complaining to them. But to no avail. I can't get through on 1504.

I used to have a 256 kbps connection until last year after which I went to the UK. I came back with a plan to stay for only a month, and thus I thought I can reactivate my connection and change the plan to H500 with 2.5 GB limit and Night Unlimited.

But, the events that occurred on June 5th and 7th after 8 am (1.3 GB usage wrongly charged) I have been ruing my decision of taking this plan!

Anyway, 1504 it is. I'll call them. And yeah, my parents don't need the Internet anyway. So I'll disconnect this connection for good when I leave! Whew!

However, the thought of my parents seeing that inflated Internet bill when it comes next month gives me nightmares...

@essbebe: Nope, my modem is not connected to a Wi-Fi router. It is clearly the same thing that has happened to ajai5777 and many other people in this thread here.

What's the complaint site for Bangalore users?

And yes, I always restart my modem in the night at about 2:05 am before I start downloading. But those 2 fateful days that I couldn't wake up in the morning... (sigh)

I had scheduled my PC to shut down at 7:45 am, and it did! 1.3 GB getting downloaded by handshakes is f***in ridiculous!
There's no logic to that claim. As a layman would say - "that's a conniving way to rip off your customers!".

Anyway, please do let me know that online complaint site.

    Thanks.

Normally in BSNL until u speak to the concerned officer, things don't work out right for u.

    try calling BSNL Bangalore Broadband DGM G K SUTAR 2286 3322/ 2286 2288 email: gksutar at bsnl.co.in or call the PGM SHUBHENDU GHOSH's office 2286 5588 / 2212 3456 .
The secrty. are very resourceful and helpful.

Ask them - is it practically possible to download 1.3gb in 15 mins in Home 500? there is a definite glitch in bsnl bb usage software.

@essbebe: Thanks for the complaint website.
I have lodged a complaint. Let's see where it goes...

And, incredibly, I still cannot open the BSNL Data Usage Portal!

@StormShadow: Wow! Thanks for those numbers. I'll give them a ring tomorrow, and present my case to them. This is awesome! I hope things get better.

And, I didn't get 1.3 GB downloaded in 15 mins. No No.

This is what happened: On June 5th, from 8 am to 11 am, 970 MB got downloaded and on June 7th, from 8 am to 10:15 am, 460 MB got downloaded - when clearly my PC was switched off by 7:45 am using an automatic scheduler. If you're wondering about June 6th, then, well, I did not download during the previous night.

Even then, 1.3 GB getting downloaded without the PC being on, without actually being connected to any website, is downright ridiculous. And this is what those BSNL Officers will need to answer tomorrow!

    Thanks again, StormShadow!

rest apart from BSNL errors I fail to understand why do some users keep on their modems on whole day inspite of the PC being shut down??

I keep alarm in my mobile wake up at 02.30 and then start PC, modem, and schedule download and then go to sleep and anyways by morning 06 I am awake. So before 8 I wind up my downloads and switch off modem first then PC.

NUL i use only when required.

One advise is why waste electricity by keeping modem on when not required and then blaming BSNL .

I am still in disbelief how BSNL's software has downloaded 970 mb and 486 mb in 2 and 3 hrs respectively, in IDLE mode!

I called up the DGM's office again today, from London, asking whether the problem has been recognized and resolved. But they're saying that they spoke to the CRO who again reiterated the "handshake" logic.

Even if that were to be true, then 1.4 GB in 5 hrs, in IDLE mode. Are they serious?

Anyway, the new DGM is Mrs. Dhanalakshmi N. She can be contacted on the same number that was mentioned here - 080-22863322. I spoke to her today, and sent her an e-mail at dhanalakshmin@bsnl.co.in, with all hopes resting on her.

I've also provided her a link to this thread in the forum. Hoping this helps in solving my problems, and hoping that anyone who reads this thread can be wiser and be better prepared and aware!
