Miles?????? We are being very optimistic and upbeat, aren't we?

The range of a wifi router is at best 50m radius in open area. At home, this is no more than 50 feet - usually less than 25 feet.

The range will not exceed more than 50 metres or so, at the max. Especially the modems provided by BSNL are meant for small home/office networks.

WiFi can't cover distance in miles - your post suggests that you're in a different city than where the modem is situated.

You may look up these facts on any networking website.

Hey -- 180 feet translates to about 55 metres

100 feet is about 30 metres

    So no surprise here

My post was for just4kix cos he said range is only 25 feet.

Btw im in the building next door. So 100 feet with 3 walls in between is a good range.

It totally depends upon the house. If the space is open, you can get the wifi signal as far away as 50 m.

In our house there are cement/concrete walls. Next it depends on how thick the walls are. Finally, it depends upon the router itself and where the wifi router is placed. Some routers have a more powerful signal. So anything more than 25 feet, is a bonus.

If you are getting a good signal at 100 ft away, good for you.

Wifi is different. We were talking about home wifi routers.

If you wish mobility then you will have to go with the likes of Reliance Netconnect+, Tata Photon+, etc. Note that 3.1 mbps or speeds like that are available in select cities only. At other places these USB dongles work at CDMA 1x speed (144 kbps).

Are you too thick to understand the conversation so far?

    Here is the synosis again:

    - Home wi-fi routers are useful for limited range only - at most 60 feet
    - To access internet anywhere in city or outside, you need mobile internet (this is not internet on mobile/cellphone) like Netconnect+, Photon+
    - Wifi spots are certainly available but at limited places only and by a select few companies only

    Bismilla ur Rehman Ur Rahim
first of all thanks to Allah

first of all you must know that in wifi there are few many things. There is the concept of wifi, routers, hotspots etc. The typical radius of wifi in city atmosphere is not going to be more than 30 feets or so If maximum. If the device is well put than some more better signals can be achieved. Same happens with the surrounds. More urbanised localities means lesser catch area. You can increase the signals by watching the place where you have your device. The way you keep it. And the type of device does also help. Modems have different qualities.

The wifi range of data signals. depend
(1)on the location of the Access point
    (2)Height of the tower
(3)Your location for "line of sight "
    (4) Reception sensitivity of your receiving usb/modem wlan card
    (5) use of Dish type Antenna Boosters etc.

If you have land line based broadband connection, by selecting a
WI FI router with Dual Antenna the range can increase.

    For reference:
    Radiolabs - Wifi Range Calculator

If you buy datacard/wimax/usbcard etc, wherever you go
If wifi Tower access is available , you can use your laptop.
