If your modem is within warranty period, they will exchange it. Still you can get a modem from BSNL, if you can talk to the Engineer or Accounts officer. BSNL is cheaper than third party modems.

I recently bought a wifi modem from BSNL for Rs.80 per month rent. If you are interesting in paying full amount, Rs. 1600 + tax will be the rate. No security deposit will be charged. Modems from open market costs about Rs.2500.

It depends on the BSNL people. If the Engineer is kind, he can give you a free replacement. Better talk to him in person. I didn't paid any advance. Actually I made a mistake. Instead of talking the Engineer, I talk to the Admin people. So I had to pay for the new modem.

If ur modem is under warranty period, which means you have bought it, then they are quite unlikely to replace it. If you have taken it on rent, then it can be exchanged.

If you take on rent, there is a security deposit.

The problem with 3 rd party modem is that, if any complaints arise, they will not support. They will say it is your modem fault. If you are confident of dealing maintenance, you can go for 3 rd party modems.
