Hi Everyone, I have a BSNL Dataone connection for the last 2 years in Chennai and have been using the same in my desktop without any problems. I have now got a new laptop and want to use the same BSNL connection. I have tried connecting the cable from the modem and after doing everything that the call center asked me to do I still get the 678 error message. 'The remote computer did not respond". When I use the desktop I have no problems. I have set the IP address in the laptop as follows suggested in one of the threads in the same forum IP address: 192.168.1.2 Subnet mask 255.255.25.0 Default gateway 192.168.1.1 DNS server: 61.1.96.69 Alternate: 61.1.96.71 The modem I have is UT 300 R2 ADSL Modem and i have pinged in the run command for 192.168.1.1 -t and get the reply message 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time<1ms TTL=255 Intrestingly I went to Bangalore and in my friends place and I used my laptop in their Broadband with changed local IP settings and it worked like magic. I am wondering now what's still needs tweeking??? Will be grateful if anyone of you can help. Thanks in Advance, Stephen

The problem might be in the configuration? Give details how the configuration is there in the modem. It is for Bridge or PPPoE. If is is Bridge change it to PPPoE and let the browser comunicate with the modem.

For UT 300 R2 ADSL Modem 192.168.1.2 is used in the modem for USB connection. So do not use it for your PC's IP address use 192.168.1.x where x may be 3,4 etc. Also caution; while using USB connection set gateway as 192.168.1.2. DNS address may be set same as gateway address that works better.

You can try this: Goto "Network Connections" and then delete the connection you use as your broadband. Then you can try creating a new connection named anything you want and then give it a try. It should work. If you need any help with that, please feel free to ask me. (PS- before you delete your broadband connection, please make sure your firewall software has been configured to allow connections from your modem IP. If not, then please add your modem IP in the list of allowed ones in your firewall. Then restart the system. If it still doesnt work, try disabling and then enabling the 'Local Area Connection' between your computer and the modem.)
