Default Connecting Laptop with existing BSNL Dataone connection

    Hi Everyone,

I have a BSNL Dataone connection for the last 2 years in Chennai and have been using the same in my desktop without any problems. I have now got a new laptop and want to use the same BSNL connection. I have tried connecting the cable from the modem and after doing everything that the call center asked me to do I still get the 678 error message. 'The remote computer did not respond".

When I use the desktop I have no problems.
I have set the IP address in the laptop as follows suggested in one of the threads in the same forum
    IP address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet mask 255.255.25.0
    Default gateway 192.168.1.1
    DNS server: 61.1.96.69
    Alternate: 61.1.96.71

The modem I have is UT 300 R2 ADSL Modem and i have pinged in the run command for 192.168.1.1 -t and get the reply message
    192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time<1ms TTL=255

Intrestingly I went to Bangalore and in my friends place and I used my laptop in their Broadband with changed local IP settings and it worked like magic.

I am wondering now what's still needs tweeking???

Will be grateful if anyone of you can help.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Stephen

The problem might be in the configuration? Give details how the configuration is there in the modem. It is for Bridge or PPPoE. If is is Bridge change it to PPPoE and let the browser comunicate with the modem.

Default UT 300 R2 ADSL modem

For UT 300 R2 ADSL Modem 192.168.1.2 is used in the modem for USB connection. So do not use it for your PC's IP address use 192.168.1.x where x may be 3,4 etc. Also caution; while using USB connection set gateway as 192.168.1.2. DNS address may be set same as gateway address that works better.

    Lightbulb Try this...

    You can try this:
Goto "Network Connections" and then delete the connection you use as your broadband. Then you can try creating a new connection named anything you want and then give it a try.
    It should work.
If you need any help with that, please feel free to ask me.
(PS- before you delete your broadband connection, please make sure your firewall software has been configured to allow connections from your modem IP. If not, then please add your modem IP in the list of allowed ones in your firewall. Then restart the system. If it still doesnt work, try disabling and then enabling the 'Local Area Connection' between your computer and the modem.)

For error 678 u need to make sure there is no dial up modem active, make sure go to device manager and disable the dial up modem under modem option

also check the IE -tools-internet option-connection there is no dial up connection and also let me know what type of connection u r making cable/wireless

    @stephenC
    Subnet mask 255.255.25.0
Presume typing mistake. 255 .255.255.0 correct entry.
I used my laptop in their Broadband with changed local IP settings and it worked like magic.
    1....If still not solved try,
In both Desktop and Laptop, in TCP/IP properties.
    Enable Obtain IP address automatically.
In modem presume DHCP has been enabled.
    2...If problem rectified,
please post details for others use/reference. .

I would not prefer to lock any thread because sometimes new questions could be asked. People should really look out at the date of the first post and then post answers. Locking a thread is desireable only if there is a real valid reason to do so (like spams, heated arguments, etc.) or there is an alternate new thread somewhere.

Anyway there are tons of old threads that may need to be locked based on similar argument.

    No need to post solutions.
sometimes new questions could be asked.
So in old threads new questions can be asked to whom ?
    confused!

For a new user there could be questions. The user may be reading an existing thread that matches his/her problem. It could contain a solution to the problem but the user is still not satisfied or has another small query. The user could post the question right there or create a new thread.

    So what I said is:

    - if there is an old thread where question is asked and there has been no activity for over a month, assume that the thread starter has got his problem resolved
    - the thread may or may not contain a solution but since the thread is old no need to post a solution (you can do so if you like but probably no one may require it).
    - but a new user could come up and post "Hey, I have the same problem! Any solution?". Or "The solution does not seem to be working for me". Then of course you can post a solution.

Please note that I am not ordering anybody. This is just my suggestion.

What I welcome everyone of you to do is create a guide for generic solutions and post them in the "How to" section. That will become the stanadard repository.
