    Any ADSL+ modem will work with BSNL BB. But why would you wish to go with a self purchased modem?

    - You will not get support from BSNL (what "support" you can call it)
    - BSNL modems are cheaper than most
    - BSNL modems do the job properly

    But if you are decided about a modem from the market buy from reputed companies such as NetGear, D-Link, Belkin, etc,

    Important: All these companies also sell plain or wi-fi routers. You must buy a modem+router (single device).

    Speed mainly depends on line condition and other factors. A new modem may not be able to give better speed. I have best of the lines to my home. Even then I got only 180 KBps in ULF 1100. Not everyone is lucky enough to get good speed.

    Try any download from Microsoft and report the speed here.

    This may help

    As meetdilip said, your modem is not the issue. Presumably you are on the 2 mbps plan. Note that 2 mbps is not the promised speed. It is the maximum attainable speed under your plan. BSNL says that speed will be anything (from 256 kbps) up to 2 mbps.

    And as dilip said, speed depends on many other factors. Your modem is DEFINITELY not the issue and changing it is NOT going to help.

    Check your SNR stats. Have a look here: SNR Margin and Line Attenuation - What do they mean?

    I hope that you read the (SNRR/Line Attenuation) article that I wrote. I am sincerely hoping that the article clearly answers your questions.

    Regarding your modem, I do not think that changing the modem is going to help you increase the speed.

    Try this

    By default (even with QoS disabled) Windows reserves up to 20 percent of your connections bandwidth. To override this reserve take the following steps.

    Make sure you Log on as Administrator, not as a user with Administrator privileges.

    * Start-> Run-> type gpedit.msc
    * You will see [Local Computer Policy]
    * Expand the [Administrative Templates] branch
    * Expand the [Network] branch
    * Highlight [QoS Packet Scheduler]
    * Double-click [Limit Reservable Bandwidth]
    * Check [Enabled]
    * Change [Bandwidth limit %] to 0 %
    * Click [Apply] [OK]

    * Restart

    Effect is immediate.

    Better not to disable it if you are using genuine OS. This was discussed before. If I remember correctly, there was some drawback about this method and we concluded not recommended. Just my opinion.

    @nice_guy75
    The Myth that is called the QoS 20% Bandwidth Gain
    ...................
    Finally, if you think and/or feel it did give you back your 20% bandwidth (regardless of what Microsoft and other tech sites said), then good for you. If you want to test it, go ahead there is no harm in doing this “tweak". If nothing happens, then it only proves that it is nothing but a false tweak misunderstood by many, and next time do your research before believing tweaks posted by even the tech’iess of sites.

    nice guy 75 trick didn't work for me on my windows xp sp2 machine. I didn't notice any change.

    And one more thing, BSNL uses adsl 2+ technology which is defined by ITU and the same technology is used by other adsl service providers world wide, so any adsl modem can work on bsnl networks and you should configure on your own the vpi,vci, etc., settings on your own if you buy modem from market the BSNL people will not help in setting up the modem. And the same modem can be used on airtel, reliance adsl based connections by just changing the settings.

    So there is no modem specific to operator but the modem should support the operators dsl standard.

    BSNL doesn't manufacture the modems but acquire it from the manufacturers like utstarcom, teracom, huaei, and the firmware is modified to show bsnl logo and with reduced options.
