Thumbs down BSNL broadband flaky connection / continuous cyle connect-disconnect

    Hi guys

For the last 1 week, I am facing lot of trouble with my BSNL broadband connectivity (with Huawei SmartAX MT880).
It connects like before, but once connected it just disconnects within a minute. And then so forth and so on.. it keeps cycling through connect-disconnect.

I read through forum msgs for similar problems but cant make out for sure whether its to do with the quality of line (bsnl phone line) or the modem settings.

I tried to capture the SNR values of my connection, which are:
Model Name MT880 Firmware Version V200R001C01B021SP02 INDIA
May 17 2005 ADSL Line Status ADSL State Show Time
    Data Path Interleave
DSP Version D.57.2.17 Operation Mode ADSL2
    Output Power 12.1 dB
Upstream DownStream ADSL Link Speed 861 Kbps
    ADSL Link Speed 7562 Kbps
    Previous Tx-Rate 861 Kbps
    Previous Rx-Rate 7603 Kbps
    SNR 10.4 dB
    SNR 6.5 dB
    CRC 0
    CRC 0
    Attenuation 8.0 dB
    Attenuation 17.0 dB
    FEC 0
    FEC 0
    HEC(ATM Layer) 0
    HEC(ATM Layer) 0

Dont know if you can see the above snapshot, so copying it in plain text too:
    Upstream
    ---------
    ADSL Link Speed 861 Kbps
    Previous Tx-Rate 861 Kbps
    SNR 10.4 dB
    CRC 0
    Attenuation 8.0 dB
    FEC 0
    HEC(ATM Layer) 0

    Downstream
    --------------
    ADSL Link Speed 7562 Kbps
    Previous Tx-Rate 7603 Kbps
    SNR 6.5 dB
    CRC 0
    Attenuation 17.0 dB
    FEC 0
    HEC(ATM Layer) 0

Are the SNR/ Attentuation values too low?

I read somewhere that selecting G.dmt instead of ADSL2 is better for connectivity, but in my config pages of MT880, I cant find anywhere to select G.dmt etc.

BTW, I have had this bsnl connection (at the current location) for the last 2.5 years and havnt really faced such a problem earlier. The connectivity has been more or less stable.

Can someone suggest, future course of action:
    - Should I complain to BSNL for quality of line?
    - Should I request BSNL to reset my port (read somewhere on a forum ; no idea what it means?
    - Should I upgrade my modem FW?
    - Any clue on how to select G.dmt on MT880 (any hidden means)

BTW, I dont have parallel phone connections before the modem and I even tried to remove the splitter and connect the phone line directly into modem to no avail.

Thanks for your help in advance
    Sandeep

SNR values are a bit low. Get your line checked by the line man. Ask him to put a new cable from the junction box to your house.

What should be the expected SNR values range (both upsteam / downstream) ?
I mean, how low are these values in comparison to expected/ acceptable range?

Is it an expected issue (frequent disconnections) if the SNR values are low?

sorry, lot of questions, but I dont know this area of technology at all.

    Thanks for your patience.

things that can cause you to experience disconnections/flaky connections:

    1) problem on BSNL's end : this is very likely, since right now high latencies, packet losses, slow speeds, outages are commonplace.

    2) Line problems on your end : BSNL uses very cheap twisted pair copper wires. Go outside your house and see if there are any obvious breaks in the wire; call a line man to come and check too (call bsnl phone complaint, not bb).

    3) Modem overheating.

    4) Local computer issues (virus/ some kind of infection), modem error, modem-computer cable problem, splitter problem etc.

It sounds like you have 1 or more of the above issues.
You can change dns servers but I highly doubt it will fix such a severe issue.

Thanks guys for your feedback. I have booked a complaint with BSNL for the same. Lets see how it goes.

Just to clarify, the problem is with the physical link somehow. Nothing to do with local computer etc. I have a WRT65G wireless router behind the modem, which actually does the PPPoE logging, with the modem (MT880) only set up as a bridge.

    One more question:
With my current setup, I can only view the config page of the wireless modem (which fronts my PC/ laptop), and NOT the config page of the modem.
To view the modem config page, I have to remove the ethernet from the wireless router and fix it directly to my laptop.
It gets quite cumbersome that way, and I would love a way if I can view config of BOTH router and modem at the same time.

FYI, I have set the modem as local IP 192.168.1.1 AND the router as well to 192.168.1.1

If someone can point me to a link/ guide which I can use to config the setup such that both modem/ router's config is available (at diff IP addresses), that would be awesome.

    Thanks again.

    Guys,

Booked a complaint with BSNL, but apart from 2-3 calls from them to re-check if the problem is resolved, no real action.

Meanwhile, I tried borrowing a friend's modem (UT StarCom's ut300R2u) to plug into my line and check, and find that it seems to get consistently higher SNR value (specially for Upstream) than mine, and in the little time that I could test, I didnt see a disconnection using the same.
FYI, for me SNR for upstream/ downstream were: 10.4 and 6.5 dB averagely.
While for my friends, similar values were: 16.7 and 6.8 odd.

Still not sure, if this confirms that the problem is with my modem or the line or both?

BTW, for my modem, there are sometimes, when the connection lasts even 2 hours or more, but then for most of the time it keeps connecting/ disconnecting.

Your suggestions/ help here is appreciated.
    Thx
    Sandeep
