Thumbs up Find the Fastest DNS Server automatically

Namebench, an amazing software created by By Thomas Strömberg, google employee.

Namebench is a new open source tool that helps to take the guess-work out of the DNS server selection process. namebench benchmarks available DNS services and provides a personalized comparison to show you which name servers perform the best
It hunts down the fastest DNS servers available for your computer to use. namebench runs a fair and thorough benchmark using your web browser history, tcpdump output, or standardized datasets in order to provide an individualized recommendation. namebench is completely free and does not modify your system in any way. This project began as a 20% project at Google.

    Here is the download link
namebench-1.3.1-Windows.exe - namebench - namebench 1.3 for Windows (portable executable) - Project Hosting on Google Code

After installing click start and it will take about 10-15 mins approx to do a series of tests and then display a page where it shows the comparison of your current dns server and the best dns server

This is how the results look like

Note:There are other softwares too for this but i found Namebench and DNS bench(another app) interesting and accurate

This new DNS does look good. Decent speed and of course it must secure.

Mine says the primary DNS is the fastest! The same 192.168.1.1

Secondary and tertiary are all BSNL dns's...

    What to make out???

The google DNS always showed high ping times for me on speedtest (like 300-400 ms) as opposed to 100-200 ms of BSNL.

Before I gave up Windows, I used Treewalk --- how can you have a faster DNS server than your own PC? Many of us are probably using the same sites over and over, so a local caching server is fastest. Of course, it has to "send out" for addresses it doesn't yet know. Yes, Windows caches IP addresses, but it does not store them, so the cache is not there after reboot.

Yes, I tried these tools. I don't remember too much about the results, except that I too found the local ISP's own server to better than I expected, and some of the now-popular services to be worse.

There is a lot of ignorance about DNS. You see stuff all over the net with "try open-dns" being recommended as the answer to problems that could not ever be DNS-related . (My car won't start. Try open-dns, I do and my car always starts... ). Then there is the go-faster-stripes mentality: I changed to open-dns and my system runs 100 times faster... Oh, right; of course it does .

What's great about these tools is that they give us an objective view.
