Thread: Speed with and without router.

Hi ! Guys,

I am on ULF1350 plan ,2Mbps for 20GB - later 512kbps. And I am planning to buy a Wireless router for connecting my iPod touch ocassionally. I will be connecting wireless router to my existing modem and will be using my desktop with ethernet connection as my desktop is close to my modem and doesnt have wifi card.

The question is : If I am getting on an average 0.47Mbps to 0.55Mbps after 20GB with my modem connected directly via ethernet to pc , and I connect a router in between my modem and pc will there be any decrease in speed as there will be an extra device between my modem and pc ?

I cant afford a modem router 2 in 1 so will have to purchase a seperate router only.

Cost wise ( ADSLmodem/4lanport/WIFI) will be same Rs 1800 from Bsnl
and only for wifi router between Rs 1500 to Rs2000 other brands .

Usually WIFI speed is 54 Mbps compared to 100 Mbps for lan connection.
2N wifi routers may give 108 Mbps speed.

Current modem is DLink GLB-802C
Shortage of BSNL wifi modems in my exchange !! May take a month or so and I urgently need wifi to jailbreak my iPod touch !!

Outside wifi modems costs 2500 approx for G range and 3500+ for N range.
Asus and Netgear G series routers available for 1400 approx .

The question is not about max speed possible through LAN or WiFi G/N .
The question is about speed degradation if a connection passes through router.
If its Modem---->PC on ethernet , i get 0.55 Mbps avg.
If its Modem--->Router--->PC on ethernet , will it still be 0.55Mbps avg. or will be lower as data will have to travel through router circuits ??

In short Does a router in between modem and pc lower the speed of internet by a bit ? If its a 2Mbps connection one can afford loosing speed by a bit , but when speed is meagre 0.55 Mbps this can make difference ?

So router in between modem and pc does or doesn't affect speed of internet ?

An adsl modem synchronises to a certain speed .
Actual speed will vary due to various factors.
Check your speed at

There is no assurance you will get a steady speed at all times.

No, Router between a modem and a pc is not going to affect your speed.
What the router does is route the packets between two networks.

If you are going to add a router then configure the modem in bridge mode and configure the router to dial the connection.i.e. id and password in the router not in the modem.

However, if you use multiple machines simultaneously then the same speed is shared by all the machines. As long as, It is one machine connected whether through a router or directly to a modem, speed is not going to be affected.
