Default Internet working through Wifi... but not working through LAN

    Hi Guys.
    I have a BSNL connection.
It was working well till morning.
Now it has stopped working through LAN connection.
However, it still continues functioning through Wifi.

Could someone plz help me to rectify the problem.
I have checked the LAN cable. its fine. I have also tried switching the LAN ports of the modem and also tried on different computers. But it still wont work.
What else could have gone wrong??

    1. Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig/all, post the screen shot.

    2. Enable DHCP in your modem.

    3. Set " Obtain IP address automatically " in the TCP/IP properties of your connection.

What changes you made to your system?
    5.
    Are you on "Dialer" mode
    or "PPP/PPPoE mode
    6.
Check the LAN icon and from context menu select "REPAIR"
option. What error message you get ?
    7.
    mention OS used.
    8.
    Mention modem/model/makee/number and also
see link/s below and select for checking LAN settings.
    9.
I have also tried switching the LAN ports of the modem and also tried on different computers..
common unit suspect : modem/router settings.

    Feedback item wise please.

some information, even if you consider not needed , may be provided for thread ref later.

Thanks guys for yr immediate response. Following are the details-

    1) Snapshot of the image is attached

    2) dhcp is already enabled

    3) I am not able to get that network icon in the task bar. Hence not able to check the TCP/IP properties. Initially, this icon used to appear whenever i connected the LAN cord. but now it does not appear.

    4) had just done few changes in the system. Installed microsoft webcam software. It gave some error and did not install. after that all this problem occured. However, surprisingly, the LAN stopped working on my laptop also although I never made any changes to my laptop.

    5) Not very sure what PPP/PPPoE is... but to connect to the internet, I just have to plug in the modem to the power supply & connect the LAN cord. There is no dial-up.

    6) I am not getting the LAN icon. initially it used to come whenever i connected the LAN cord. However, now it dosent. It is not even appearing under network connections. ( I guess, the problem has got something to do with this, but then I cannot understand, how it could disappear from both, my desktop as well as laptop. I have already tried using a different LAN cord. but the problem still persists)

    7) OS is Windows XP

    8) Modem is BSNL Wifi router manufactured by Fujian Starnet Communications.

    1. Please repost the screen shot when the modem is connected and ON.

    3. Go to network places, among the icons, click your connection, right click > properties > TCP/IP properties.

    4. Try system restore. It use to help in some cases.

    5. You are in PPPoE

    Hi...

    Dilip & essbebe,

the snapshot posted last time was with the modem "ON" and with LAN connected.
I am again posting the snapshot- this time with wifi as well as LAN "ON".

My Modem No is AR800V Ver 3.0 (BSNL)

I have also tried configuring the modem following the links posted by essbe.
However, when I type the link hxxp://192.168.1.1[/url] in my internet explorer, it gives the error- "The page cannot be displayed" (i.e. an indication that I am not connected to the internet).

It appears that my desktop & laptop are not able to detect the modem through "LAN" mode. Tried changing th LAN cord also, but no effect.

Plz advise what can be done...

    Thanks...

    3. Change the values as shown here

http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...nectivity.html (How to repair - Limited or No connectivity)

    4. From last post, " You are not able to log in to the modem using 192.168.1.1 ".

    Reset the modem and try.

    5. Post the ipconfig/all from wifi

IF YOU RESET YOUR MODEM YOU MAY LOOSE YOUR WIRELESS CONNECTION TOO ... and you won't be able to reconfigure it until you have the wire working. Be wary of doing this.

    hxxp? Just type 192.168.1.1 .
it gives the error- "The page cannot be displayed" (i.e. an indication that I am not connected to the internet).
It could be an indication of a number of things, I guess!

My suggestion. Keep it simple, forget DHCP: it is just another thing that you don't know if it is working, and by the fact that your net card has not been configured, it probably isn't. And you can't reach the modem to check it out, so you have to set up manually.

Untick "obtain network address automatically" and configure

    ip 192.168.1.2
    mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1
    dns <your ISP's DNS server>

Even if you leave out dns for now, you can still test the connection to the modem.

    Open a Command window.

    c:\ ping 192.168.1.1

this is the basic way to test connectivity between PC and modem (or anything else. You should get messages like...

    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.83 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.767 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.758 ms

If that happens, your connection to the modem is configured fine, and you are (subject to that DNS entry in the TCP/IP properties) good to reach out beyond the modem.

If it does not happen, or you just get errors,

    1. your modem port is not 192.168.1.1 (but the ipconfig from the wifi machine should confirm this). or...
1a. you miss-typed something in the TCP/IP properties.

    2. your cable is duff

    3. your net card (or section on your motherboard) is duff)

    4. your modem port is duff

    ... ... ... (and so on).

most of the hardware errors can be ruled out by checking that you get a green light at both ends, if the equipment has lights, when you plug the cable in.
