if you are in always connected mode then it will not be a problem to play online game as you will be able to use net connection in both your laptop and desktop simultaneiously.

In my office we are using the same BSNL Modem for networking. Teracom ADSL Type 2, with 4 LAN ports and wifi. Our Win 7 laptop is using wifi and the other 2 PC s are using LAN. The thing is you need to assign a same workgroup name for all three systems and then automatically in your network you can see the other system. We are sharing files, accessing other PCs HDD, and also sharing printer. Ispite of Printer being connected to one PC we can fire prints from all PCs. The Teracom ADSL Type 2 Modem also acts as network router. So you can transfer any amount of data without worrying about internet usage as the router will directly transfer data and it wont get transferred through internet.

you wont be able to transfer such type to larger files using wireless or lan cables......it will take such a lot of time that it will be done earlier than if u use 1gb pendrive to transfer files by making such parts.....but yes u can use it for playing games in multiplayer modes....u need to configure your lan ip. A dextop lan ip should not match with laptop ip, i hav not ever tried this because i have only dextop as much as i know if u use a ip range from 1 to 10 in dextop then u should choose ip range between 11-20 in laptop...and firewall should also allowed to connect to that...u also need to know your both computers name to know to go "My Computer" properties and open "Computer Name" tag and u will see Full Computer Name in xp....this name is use for searching a computer on network for transferring file and this must be use in game also while playing in multiplayer mode....but i will suggest u to first try directly using lan cable between dextop and laptop. without going through router.

I hope this will somewhat help you!!
