    Default Long Ping Times

I am on BB 1000 UL plan. The speed is around 1.3 megs. I have been having problems (Splintering, drop outs) with video on Skype since I shifted to this plan.

Earlier when I was on 256 or 500 KBpS plans of BSNL, I had no such problems.

I tested the line quality on Pingtest.net.

    The following is the result:

Server: Doha, Quatar. (I'm in Hyderabad, India)
    Packet Loss: 0%
    Ping: 431ms
    Jitter: 2ms

I'm getting either long Ping times or long Jitter times or both.

When we talk about "normal" ping times, are they directly proportional to the distance of the server from where I'm situated or irrespective of the distance, are "Normal" times the same for all the servers?

Are these longer times due to line noise?
I don't hear any audible noise in the telephone line.

What should be done to mitigate this problem? I have seen in forums that we have to contact the ISP. But I doubt if the people at the lower level - like line men - understand the problem - particularly because there is no audible noise in the phone line. Or will they carry some equipment to measure the parameters?

    Thank u.

latencies to foreign servers have been awful for the past week or so at random times + always during the 7am-8am period.

Try pinging a couple of websites and post the results :

start->run->cmd->type : "ping Product reviews and prices, software downloads, and tech news - CNET /t"

right click mark a chunk, hit enter and paste here; repeat for a few websites.

you can also traceroute the website you are trying using "tracert <site name>"

    also post results from speedtest.net.

It could be a line issue but if it's not always there; it's probably a fault on bsnl's end (garbage routing/congestion)

    Speed Test on Speedtest.net

    Server: Mumbai
    Latency:75 ms
    Download Speed: 1.3 meg
    Upload Speed: 0.4 meg
    -----------------------------------------------

I tried to tracert yahoo.com etc but they r getting timed out; may be i'm not doing it correctly.
I'm typing in command line, tracert yahoo.com But there is no response beyond my modem.
Is this due to the Firewall included in win xp? No firewall is kept on in the modem.

@ssreddy, in your earlier plans(Home256 and home500, meaning Rs256 or Rs500)) the speed was upto2Mbps)
now with BB1000UL you speed comes down to 512 or 256Kbps

I'm getting 1.3 to 1.4 megs of speed now. Speed is not an issue here but the line quality; the ping times & jitter are high.

I was getting better video on Skype earlier probably because the line quality was better though I did not test it.

How is it that your upload speed is so much higher than your download speed?

Well that's because of Reliance Optic Fiber connectivity which don't drop speed and data packets!

there are some software that analyze the section by section measurements of quality on a selected route
i was using 7 years or earlier
