    Question Modem for 4mbps ?

    Hello guys,
I'm shifting to "Home Combo 1400 ULF" plan very soon.
Do I need any special modem to get 4mbps speed ?
Or I can use Home 1400 plan with type 1 modem i.e. UT Starcom UT-300-R2U ?

The BSNL guy has said that UT-300-R2U (Type 1 modem) is not capable of giving the speed of 4mbps due to some uplink and downlink restriction.
    Is that true ?

If yes, then please suggest me which modem should I buy ?

    Thank You.

I think the current modem will be OK. Just change the data rate in the modem. Post the screen shot of your modem menu page.

You can also try talking to them and get a replacement as they have suggested a modem change. Mostly it will be done free of cost as you have applied for a plan change.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

This is what I've been told on broadbandforum

Clearly whoever you spoke to has NO IDEA what he is talking about.

Any standard ADSL modem will give you any speed up to 8mbit/s (assuming the line is in excellent condition and you are close to the exchange).

Any modem sold within the last couple of years, however, is likely to be ADSL2+ capable and therefore capable of up to 24mbit/s (again, assuming the line is in excellent condition and you are close to the exchange and the exchange is equipped for ADSL2+).

The modem in question, it seems, is this one: Powered by Google Docs which is actually capable of ADSL2+ and therefore would handle the speeds up to 24mbit/s, unless the modem was given to you by BSNL and they intentionally crippled it (in which case, all that is needed is a firmware upgrade).

Call the BSNL guy back and tell him he is a moron.

Ya, tell him to report the modem as faulty and get yourselves a new modem free of cost. Ask to configure it in such a way that you get 4 Mbps speed.

First talk to someone knowledgeable at BSNL. Try if you can get the no. of Senior Divisional Engineer. Call customer care and ask for his no. . Talk to him and seek assistance.

You can get a modem from another exchange. Give a request at your exchange.

    What is 'Annex M' ?
You should give some feedback instead of asking counter questions.
Enable Annex M and .post results
Both positive or negative results useful.

I hope you know all the details about other mod modes
    shown in your modem.

Hint : In Google search type: Annex M

UT300R2U has annex M option. It has annex M in advanced setup dsl tab.

I am attaching a screen shot for your ready reference.

This UTSTARCOM-300-R2U can be used for any plan that bsnl provides as it supports adsl2+ standard which can support download speed upto 24 Mbits?Sec.

Yours is older model of UTSTARCOM300R2U and supports ADSL2+ standard which is evident from the screen shot posted so your modem supports all plans provided by BSNL. so you need not buy a new modem.

nokia siemens router can support 4 mbps line as it is a adsl2+ modem and your line can also support that speed which is evident from the fact that maximum attainable speed is upto 19 mbps.

Finally, after 10 days, these illiterate BSNL guys have changed my plan to Home 1400 UL Combo, but speed is still 2 mbps
I'm fed up of BSNL, but we dont have any other option in our city.

I've tried selecting ADSL+2, G.dmt but speed is not increasing.

When I talked to that BSNL guy, he is saying that 2 mbps is the highest speed I can get in this plan.

Upload ADSL data page from modem ( snr/attn/snnc rate/actual rate etc ) to say tinypic.com as jpg picture.
Make an ONLINE complaint here. ( giving above link also)
    http://mis.bsnl.co.in/pgs/internet/pgwebregn.asp
    Feeedback if any action taken.
Mention the BSNL Gateway earlier( if saved) and now as shown in Modem device info ( for Always On" cconnection )
