Default WLL Woes – Help Needed from Techies..

I work and live in a very remote area where land phones are not permitted by the Forest Department. A few years ago BSNL started installing WLL phones in this area which improved the communication scene dramatically. Then “High Speed Internet “ was offered . The promised connect speed was 230 kbps, but the actual speed varied between a few bytes to 40 kbps.
Of late it has become awfully difficult to get a connect and the average speed is 4.7 kbps. It has become impossible even to use the E-mail facility.

Now, the “Working Parameters” obtainable from the Huawei WLL phone I use are as follows:
    Rx Power = - 66
    PN = 48
    Ec/Io = -8
(Of course these parameters keep changing within a few minutes.)

Can any one please explain these parameters? Can this data be used in any way to improve my connection?
I use an external antenna supplied by BSNL. Is there any other available antenna ( Either ready-made or DIY) which could improve the reception?
Any inputs on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you all..

    Jp

If possible Increase the height of the WLL Antenna .
If Dish type experiment as for DTH Satellite television.
    Orient towards BSNL tower.
The freq range for WLL/CDMA appears to be 820 MHz to 900 MHz.
a beam antenna like for ( old DD television: can be fabricated )
Possible give details of BSNL antenna.
What type of cable they have used ?
( like for cable TV ?)

Thank you for the reply, essbebe.
.BSNL has supplied a “patch” antenna and the cable is coaxial.
Being on a mountain range, we are already at a higher elevation than the tower and the antenna works best when positioned just a few feet above the ground. The phone shows full signal strength, but it is getting locked to the wrong towers apparently.
(There has been a proliferation of towers of other service providers, but because of certain legalities we are unable to access their services)
What I had in mind was an antenna that would be very selective… May be I should try out your suggestion of a “beam” antenna.

    Regards,

Hope you know how to make a beam ( or Dish) Antenna with reflectors directors etc.
Please confirm from BSNL Freq Range .
Can you give details of the patch Antenna supplied by BSNL ?

Any Cable TV network available in your locality ?

Frankly, I am a washout on antennas! But I know the one you mentioned..and I think I there is one lying around among the junk here..though the dipole seems to be missing.
The “patch” antenna which BSNL supplies is nothing but a thin piece of metal about 4” square encased in a plastic case. We only have individual TV dishes..
Not much technical help expected from BSNL – The only answer I get to my queries is “ Sir, change your antenna position so that the “PN” number is 212, That is your tower”!
Presently the antenna is within a room, just 3 feet above the floor. And it had worked beautifully for the last 2+ years. It was the only place I could get the magical “212” in my compound.
For nearly 1 month now, that “212” has been playing hide and seek and after a lot of pestering BSNL has given what they termed “All India Roaming” to my WLL. But PN 16 appears to be the strongest and they have no clue which tower it is!
Right now I am connected to PN 308 as it rarely happens, and my connect speed is.. 5 kbps..

I am aware that exchanges in any internet forum are for all the members to read and respond. I also understand that a quick reply means an instant and pertinent reply to the previous response.
My nearest internet cafe is some 2 hours drive away, one way, by the way.

I'll get back to you when I am able to open the link you have thoughtfully suggested.

I have done enough searches on WLL antenna but could not get any information that could be of any use and that was why I joined this forum and put up my query.
You have taken time and interest in trying to help me, which is greatly appreciated but my basic query was what the various parameters obtained from my WLL phone meant and how I could use that information to improve my reception.

    Thank you all the same.

Ignore please:. quad antenna design details for Fm radio. 88 to 108 MHz
FM Radio allocation in India is from 88 MHz to 108 MHz. So the mid frequency is 98 MHz. The equation for getting the wave length of the conductor is (300 x 0.95) / 98 MHz. i.e. 2.908163 meters. If we divide this value by 4 we can get the Quarter Lambda length. i.e. 72.70 cm, we can take it as 73 cm or 74 cm. Due to skin effect of VHF frequency the element should be a tube having more than 4 mm dia or use 3/8th tube for getting good efficiency.

A dish antenna design for 800 to 900 MHz I am searching . will update later.
