Exclamation Please change your modem's default username and password..... very urgent....

    Hi,
All the members still using the default username and password for their routers (admin, admin), please change it as soon as possible.
It is very easy for a hacker to get into your modem and play with it if you still use your default 'admin' password to log into your modem.

I tried it myself and got amused at the number of people still using their default credentials. (I just did it to make sure the claims of getting into modem was true. )

In fact, you don't even need any hacking tools to get into someone else's modem(don't ask me how...!!!). I'm sure many around here will know how to do this.

I request them not to post the method here and create more wily hackers.

So please.... change your passwords with immediate effect, hardly takes 5 mins or so and do remember to use a strong password.

This thread is meant not just for BSNL subscribers. Applies to everyone......

Good/sound advice. The reason why many people do not do this because:

    a) they are not technically savvy
    b) many have an inherent fear of machines - they are afraid that changing something may break the device (*)
    c) they do not know about the risks
    d) they do not know how to do it

(*) - When I was young, I was not allowed to go near our tape recorder, let alone tocuh it. "Don't touch that, you will damage it" was the constant cry I used to hear. Many years later, I purchased my VCR. My son was less that 2 years at that time. I never prevented him to do anything. Within two weeks, he observed how we operated it and starting playing cassettes on his own.

Good reminder. Hey, a retired professional, and even mine was still on the default. Disgraceful!

Guess what (so much for the professionalism)... I wrote out a nice string of letters, numbers and punctuation and then mistyped it! Luckily I worked out which bit of my own writing I had misread. Idiot, eh?

I'm now looking forward to the next time Airtel try and reconfigure my modem remotely!

Some people do not change the default login credentials fearing that they might forget the username and password, if they change it.

For them I just wanted to say that, there are a few website, where you can get the default password of some of the most common routers and modems.

You don't need a website to find out "admin" and "password" or one of the other popular defaults: most of us would be there within about three guesses!

Yes, I respect the experience of the PRO members on this forum and understand most of the people here can get the passwords in seconds.

But not everybody, who is experiencing the problems with broadband routers, is as experienced and comfortable with the router settings. There are lots of people who search on Google for the default passwords of routers and modems. For them, such websites are definitely helpful.

It just takes buying one router --- to realise what sort of passwords they use.

But, how easy it is for us to guess is not the issue: it is how easy for those who make it their business to know that is, which is what the thread is all about.

And I'm one of those who hadn't changed it --- I have now, of course!
