    Default Help Home Networking

I have a Huwaei wireless modem wired to my desktop. Thru my Notebook I can browse the internet(wireless). No problems at all. But I want to access the files in the desktop thru Notebook and vice-versa. Everytime I click on the workgroup computers in the "Network page" and select , I get the Network User name and Password dialogue. I am not able to proceed further ,though I am the administrator on both sides. Professionals kindly reply...

Also I want to enable file sharing within LAN , but not on internet.

    Thanks...

You did not mention which Operating system installed on the Notebook and the Desktop computer. Want to know the OS for accestence, I think Windows 7 is installed any one of them.

In windows 7 go to Control Panal, Then select System and Security then go to Administrative Tools. Double Click the Local Security Policy. In the Local Security Policy double click the Local Policies then select the Security Options.
In the Policy windo ( right side in the Local Security Policy windo ) search the Network Security : Lan Manager authentication level. In default from Microsoft it's set to Not Define You have the Define the value. Double click the Network Security : Lan Manager authentication level and select the Send LM and NTLM responses from the drop down windo and click OK.
All is done, now you can Share your file through the LAN.
When you connect the Windows XP or Windows 2000 share folder it's asking for the user ID and password in Log in Windo
just like before. Just you type the user ID of Windows XP or the Windows 2000 ( If you have password set then type the password too ) then click OK

    @Nagan
In 7 home basic you canot find or access to Local Security Policy so you are not able to configure the setup what I mention above.
I dont have 7 home basic install so I dont know Secpol.msc is installed in Home edition or not but you can try it to find in System32 folder or go to run and type Secpol.msc or type %windir%\system32\Secpol.msc /s
If you can open the Secpol.msc then proced with the step mention above.

....You will LOLING to hear that I have five computers and install win 98, 2000, 2003, XP and Win 7 file sharing problem with win 7. The previous version of all windows cant share the file with win 7. Users of previous versions of windows cant acces the win 7 share folder through the LAN because the authentication level is change in LAN side at win 7. Need to configure by manually from the security policy of win 7. But in WIFI mode there is no problem to access to share folder or files from previous version of all windows. MICROSOFT are stupid

Made a search in Google and came up with a few interesting suggestions.
1.Set up both Desktop (XP SP 3) and Laptop (Win 7 Home basic preloaded) as per the instructions here here and here.

1.I am able to see the Laptop in the Desktop , BUT NOT ABLE TO CONNECT TO THAT.

2.In the laptop I get only the Laptop shared folders and NO XP DESKTOP is visible. Moreover if I click on any of the shared files I get the "improper path error".That is to say in my laptop , I can't open the shared files of my Laptop itself , when I try to access it thru the Network tab in the explorer.

Something is wrong on the Networking side of my Notebook I believe....

EUREKA !!Finally made it ,did the following:

    At the Laptop end

1.Uninstalled unnecessary drivers (like Online Armor , Netlimiter)from the Wireless adapters list of drivers. RESTARTED.

Now I am able to see and access the Laptop Network files from Desktop. Also within the Laptop I can access the Laptop's own shared files. (The software drivers goofed it up earlier.)

2.Now I got Network password dialogue whenever I accessed Desktop from my Notebook. The simple thing is User --- Guest and the password is the password of the Guest. of the DESKTOP END.
Alternatively in XP using my administrator rights I can remove password required for guest if need be. But let that remain....

    Whew.......

If only someone could help with the speed within transfer. I get abysmally low speed on tranfer of files or viewing clips... The same files when watched as a streaming clip from internet is steady but inbetween computers is very very slow..
