Question Initial Setup of Fujian Star-Net Communications AR800V-v3.0 modem for BSNL Broadband

Hi I have received a BSNL broadband connection in Chennai. Unfortunately, the modem was not preconfigured for always on connectivity and also not configured for Wireless. I only have received a paper with the basic setup for Dial-up type functionality with the respective IP address and DNS servers. Only portal id and password have been given and user name password for ISP. No BSNL mail id or wireless key, etc as obviously they have either not configured the same or have failed to mention it in the paper that they gave to me.

(Under DNS there are two addresses given any idea as to why there are 2):
    P. DNS SERVER: {218.xxx.xxx.xxx} {208.xx.xxx.xxx} 0.DNS
    A. DNS SERVER: {218.xxx.xxx.xxx} {208.xx.xxx.xxx} 0.DNS

I would like to know the brief step-by-step instructions for setting up/configuring this particular modem (as the modem interface page is quite different) for both always on(PPPOE) instead of each time dial-up and also for enabling Wireless Connectivity through the stated Fujian Star-Net AR800V-v3.0 (Syrma Technologies) modem for Win XP/Win 7. If someone with the same model modem could be kind enough to provide a proper complete tutorial on the same would be highly appreciated.

Proper step-by-step procedure would be useful even for newbies, etc. instead of getting bits and pieces of info or lack of proper explanation assuming the person already knows everything about computers and internet or where items are located. For example just saying open such and such item without stating the location or method of doing so (eg: Network Connections instead of Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections) and causing users to ask the same thing or part of the process everywhere.

    Thanks and Appreciation in Advance

I know BSNL Customer Service Sucks, but looks like they want customers to start doing everything themselves. I took another connection at my aunt's place where everything came preconfigured and only needed to connect it with minimal setup and everything was working whereas here have to do everything from scratch! All I can say is don't bother Calling Customer Care You'll be diverted no end to either ask somewhere else or call or check some other option other than mentioned on the site and the number/s will ring forever with no one to pick up.

Also Guys who come have a very bad habit of stretching their hands out at every opportunity. When the telephone came, the line was just switched to BSNL box from my old Airtel line. That time they stretched their hands, fine, even though they didn't do much. Still Line was not working some fault and three days later the modem arrived, but since I refused to pay this time saying nothing is done yet and already given last time the line was dead for another day. Land line corrected in the evening. No news about net connection except the paper in my hand, had to set it up myself only to find that these are the steps for Dial-Up Mechanism!!! mail id, etc. ???!!!

    So awaiting your Help Guys...

1.If internet connection is working Go to Management menu and Backup
settings to say C:/MY Documents/ modem on dial up.

2.The modem/router is similar to c2110 ( without wifi 0)and Teracom model With wifi
    ( minor differences possible )
to set up in 'Alway On" mode follow instructions in
    Calcutta telephones web site.
    http://www.calcutta.bsnl.co.in/datao...all/mdm12.html
    3.
You can also type in Search Box above :
    AR800V-v3.0 modem
    for old threads.
    4..
Confirm you have a laptop with wifi network adapter.
    5.
All seem to be BSNL DNS and you can check the location/s
If one fails the other is selected.
usually we suggest google dns 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
and open dns 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222
    http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp
    6.
If you want to use WEBmail of DNS ask Exchange for email Id and password.

Hey thanks a million essbebe >< for the quick reply, actually I was looking at that page only before I found out that you have replied and attempting the configuration since it seemed close, but not too close. Have succeeded with the computer's connection and also just did some setup based on what I could pick up from here and there because seriously the page for the settings is really different from previous modem pages. The MAC address filter setting keeps saying enter a valid address so am a bit at a loss here as of now, but the connection has gone through to the laptop so am half happy since am worried about what security settings have to be done.

Looks like you have a vast experience on networking bro and God Bless You for that Thing is multiple links, but different modems, different modem webpage, so that is a real issue. Unless someone has this modem and does the configuration they can probably post a step-by-step tutorial with screenshots which would be real helpful unless I am asking for too much Nonetheless, thanks once again. The last thing I want to do is sit with a headache on my Bday(26th), but looks like that is what is gonna happen coz am gonna be sitting up trow fidgeting as usual trying to gain more info from the net!

oh another thing I noted is when you change from dial up to PPPOE the DNS Server addresses change to
    P. DNS: 218.248.255.147
    A. DNS: 218.248.255.146

Are we supposed to ONLY use the IP address mentioned on the provided paper by BSNL or we can use our own. Also does it make a difference between selecting IP, DNS, etc, automatically and manually? Are there any ill effects of doing the same?

    Question Thanks

Hi essbebe thanks for your wishes and sorry for the late reply. The thing is the net was working fine, but now there is frequent disconnections, I have tried resetting the modem and tried all sorts of stuff, but the connection just dies out and there is continuous blinking of the DSL and Internet lights on the Modem. I read one of the posts which says this modem sucks on Always On and only works properly on the Dial-Up mode, That's probably the reason why they did not give me the Setup on the BSNL login paper that they provide.

The thing is at my aunt's place there is only a laptop and there has been no problems till now regarding the connection and stuff and there the document came with Always on settings, but the advantage was the modem was preconfigured by them for Wi-Fi and Always on connection whereas I received mine with config to be done from scratch. Something regarding settings that these guys are hiding probably?!! I think when the computer runs for the whole day this modem starts screwing up as mentioned by someone in that post.

I have made a document with screen shots of all the menus and tabs that come in the modem web page, but the thing is the document itself is 21.8 mb!!! Now if you have a mail id or something let me know so that I can upload it through some other medium. You can use that for reference in case anyone asks any future doubts on the same. My yahoo.co.in id is the same as my ID in case you feel shy to reveal the info so u can contact me and I will provide you or anyone interested with that document.

It would be better to keep one version and give save as and make the necessary changes, etc and post on the forum in order that is needed to do the setup with the pages and instructions so that the setup can be made accordingly. Thanks and Regards, Michael.. P.S.: sorry for the trouble.

    Thanks for the feedback.
confirm your wifi is working normal now.
I have made a document with screen shots of all the menus and tabs that come in the modem web page, but the thing is the document itself is 21.8 mb!!
    IF
This is with actual entries, and for a working router set up,

    THEN
Please post as Annexures in two posts (jpg pictures say 5 or 6 ).. in a new thread.(preferred option )
    Thread title:
    AR800V-v3.0 Router settings.

    ELSE
I can post the screen shots and
you won't get Rep points 18 from me !!!!

    OR
you can upload at Megaupload web site
    and give the link here.
    or in tinypic.com

    Para two:
For frequent disconnection try Mod mode GDMT

try tcp/ip optimizer from speed guide.net

Use google dns 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    or opendns 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222

    give snr attn data..

    Unhappy Lol Are u Serious?!

Hi There... The line started working for a while, then just when I thot its back to normal, again the DSL and Internet light started going off and the connection is screwing around At first when everything was setup I had the Power, LAN1, WLAN, DSL & Internet LEDs on the modem burning with the Power and DSL stable continuous glow and the LAN1, WLAN and Internet flickering according to Data Transfer. That time everything was flying through without any issue.

Now whatever I do it's just not stable frequent disconnection without any prompt or activity that causes it to happen. Rebooting/Reseting the modem, switching off and switching on, Modem Webpage Login and checking and reconnecting through there if status not satisfactory still doesn't solve the issue. So am guessing either Line side problem or the modem is plain screwed up.

When it connects it shows SNR Downstream -10dB to 8 dB SNR Upstream 11dB to 17 dB Line Attenuation Downstream 39.5 to 40 dB Line Attenuation Upstream 25.5 dB... It's going on disconnecting and I have to play cat and mouse game everytime when I see the Lights on for DSL and internet then only post or read something from the forums!

I will see then most probably once everything is done or I get through the mess will take screenshots after the settings are done with whichever pages I deem as needed for the setup and post it accordingly, but still that less a space allowance for post attachments is pathetic. The whole process of taking screenshots and mentioning the items in each field for a sub-menu was in itself sickening enough, then imagine multiposting no end, then I might have my own damn thread with nearly 20 to 30 pages of the webpage screenshots alone!!!

Thumbs down Bottomline is bsnl sucks too!

Wow Great to see that none of my posts have gone through thanks to the screwed up connection. I am keeping a backup on notepad this time just in case... Hell No am I gonna type this stuff again! 10 attempts thus far, here goes... Gonna be a record post for length I guess in this forum since aleady have one in IBF... lol! (Have you Kicked Out Airtel From Your House Yet!) Looks like next will be the same replaced with BSNL and my post in it!

    To answer the points:
Those are the settings I had/have done and they worked temporarily thanks@meetdilip (screenshots)
Under Internet Configuration > ADSL > Basic Attributes > Dying Gasp is set on Disabled as per BSNL Test Desk. Other than that WPA TKIP and PSK are selected for wireless.
Mac address filter does not make a difference, though you don't need Einstein's intelligence to do it. Just note down physical address of WIRELESS LAN Adaptor on the Laptop and enter it from cmd > ipconfig /all.
Neither Does Radius Server on Enabled/Disabled make a difference.

    Para Two
    a) GDMT is there but I doubt is selectable on this modem, It is available on Nokia Siemens Router as GDMT/Interleaved mode. On this modem on the places that you see the GDMT option even if you do select it, it goes to the Default.
    b) Despite all the efforts, the phone line still sounds like Diwali is on.
    c) Due to line being screwy I doubt if the Open DNS or Google DNS are a solution based on the issue.
    d) TCP/IP optimizer were installed quite a long while back since am a Utorrent user.

Here's the thing first they set up the wiring from the existing Airtel Wiring. Then they said some loop back error is coming, then they changed the wire to some screwed up rusted temporary wire, said they'll be back after diwali never turned up until a formal complaint was raised. Oh as a note if you look at BSNL wiring there are open joints no end on any of the given wires it's sometimes a surprise how the landlines even work leave alone internet. The junction box was nonexistent and I am sure even the one later put up was one that was lying in the rain and all the elements of weather in the backyard of their office.

They came and changed the Wire and don't get me started on BSNL's idea of clean wiring! I sat and redid the entire crap and fixed the Splitters and everything onto the wall and tacked up the wiring neatly. The line worked for half an hour and that was it. Called and complained again they said that everything is showing up as okay, when in fact the JE himself was struggling to hear me nor could I hear him properly with the amount of crackling noise on the line. Even a new instrument confirmed that the problem is not with the instrument since he said there are no instruments with them?! I changed splitters/filters even to see if any difference or fault with them, but all in vain!

Here's the Line of events and hope it will help you decide on whether or not to take BSNL in the future:
19/10/2010 Applied for connection (stipulated time 7 days/1 week)
20/10/2010 Phone Instrument was brought line connected to Airtel Dial tone there, but phone not ringing which I found out on the 23rd
23/10/2010 Modem was brought. Line dead. Evening line was working.
24/10/2010 Modem was not configured. Had to search through my mobile GPRS settings the setup and did the same.
25/10/2010 Done with the setup and Wireless Settings... Ultimately exhausted
26/10/2010 B/Day the most screwed up one thanks to BSNL as I was in coma stage(Dead sleep)
27/10/2010 Recovered from my coma in the evening. Night Connected Fine Internet Working
    28/10/2010 Working
    29/10/2010 Working
30/10/2010 Line worked till evening. DSL Disconnected. DSL Unstable
    31/10/2010 Line fault
01/11/2010 Worked in Fits and Starts DSL Disconnecting Constantly
02/11/2010 Worked from Noon to Afternoon. Again DSL Disconnected
03/11/2010 Faulty Line. DSL not connecting.
04/11/2010 Faulty Line. They finally decide to put the BSNL Wiring. Crappy wire put just for standby. Line connected for half and hour and then gone!
05/11/2010 Nothing Much Diwali Headache from Crackers and Lack of Internet.
06/11/2010 No sound from the guys. Connecting Disconnecting in Fits and Starts
07/11/2010 Reconfigured Modem from scratch DSL Connected again Disconnected!
    08/11/2010 Line DEAD!
09/11/2010 Line Dead! I find out that the crappy wire that was put was cut and one of them was like plastic so rusted to the core on the joints.
10/11/2010 Wires Changed. Internet Connected and just when I thought my headaches are over again DSL Disconnected before my frown could come to a straightface leave alone smile!!!
11/11/2010 Connected in the morning still DSL disconnecting errors are there and even on putting new instrument there is terrible noise in the phone line!

YEAH PRAISE MY PATIENCE, BUT I THINK A BOUT OF SERIOUS DEPRESSION HAS HIT ME, HOPE THE OUTCOME DOES NOT CAUSE SOME HARM TO EITHER ME OR OTHERS...

Now neither do I know the status of my phone/internet connection. How things are going to be taken into account. 15 Days offer! What happens to that since its now more than 23 days now and the damn thing has worked only 4 or 5 days total that too the three days were perfect, two days are only the bits and pieces of checking and stuff on the connection. What the hell is the billing going to be based on? Do I keep the connection or Disconnect and Take Reliance Wired Line and Be Done if there is no resolution to this issue?!

Here are some stupid ILLOGICAL points. They give you a BROADBAND WIRELESS MODEM NOT PRECONFIGURED for either Broadband PPPoE or Wireless?!!! WTF?! When asked they say they do not configure the modem for wireless since they(who the hell is the they? Are they accusing their own employees?) do not configure the modem securely. This I know is false, since at my aunt's place the modem was configured by BSNL and the thing is working till date without any issue. There the whole damn setting up and stuff was done in 3 days flat for the internet connection!!! Connected the modem and BAM working! Here 23 days past and all I hear is lame excuses and nonrectification of error.

Simple question? If I have only a laptop, ask for wireless modem, get the damn modem without it being preconfigured, WTF am I supposed to do with it?! Play juggling with the laptop and modem and see if it connects?! All I know is that as far as our country is concerned there is nothing that is going to come to you without its numerous shortcomings. So we the poor customers are screwed one way or the other.

    SEE THE OPTIONS:
AIRTEL: Pay premium for LIMITED UNLIMITED connection and then don't pay technicians who come to rectify any errors. Probably the reason why customers are putting up with all the BS but then not that what is happening is RIGHT! I still Stand Disconnected from AIRTEL for screwing us with the FUP s#it.
BSNL: Pay for crappy performance, Pay technicians/linesmen who stretches hands for fear of future screwups. Still get screwed upside down. If line works, it works, IF NOT BOTH YOU AND YOUR LINE ARE DEAD!
RELIANCE: Cheapest ISP. NO FAIR USAGE POLICY. Fiber Optic Wiring. NO WIRELESS MODEM PROVISION. GET IT YOURSELF, DO IT YOURSELF. Connection feasibility dependent on availability in Area. No Always On Broadband Connection. Log in to site to use the NET! Auto Disconnection so you never know.

ALL THE REST are either too costly or suck one way or the other USB/EVDO/3G all eyewash depends on your geographic location and numerous other factors so even that is not an option and come with their own drawbacks/FUPs and what nots. Either Way Forget Happiness.. Learn Tolerance or Die Silently...

My final DSL Disconnecting and connecting status with Line Attenuation when connected:
    Internet Connection
    DSL Status Connected
    Downstream Data Rate 2048000
    Upstream Data Rate 512000
    SNR (Downstream) 8.5 dB
    SNR (Upstream) 16 dB
    Line Attentuation(Downstream) 42.5 dB
    Line Attentuation(Upstream) 26.0 dB
    Gateway automatically set
    Primary DNS 218.248.255.147
    Secondary DNS 218.248.255.146

    1. Configure your modem in PPPoE.

    2. Enable DHCP in your modem.

    3. In the TCP/IP properties of your connection, set " Obtain IP address automatically ".

Thumbs up By the power of video!!!

Hi, Finally Got the Issue Sorted Out!!!

Fed up with all the nonsense and numerous phone calls and sleepless nights I took a video of both the modem disconnecting and the very noisy static and went to the BSNL office pi$$ed off to the core and guess who stands at the entrance but my dearest linesmen!!! I told them am going to meet the JE to show him something and disconnect the line. I showed them the videos and they were shaken coz no one can bulls#it video proof!

Immediately they told me sir go back home, we will be there in half an hour and I did warning them that if the issue is not solved by today there is gonna be hell. Rightfully in half an hour I received a call from them telling me that there is a fault in the line at another main junction box and the error will be solved in 1 hour, but since I had other work to do, left for it, and came back home in the evening and voila... Line working...

So nothing to do with the splitters and all because I tried 3 different ones and all three being erratic is a one in a billion chance! By the way I think I have an idea for the whole setting up of wireless modem I think am gonna take a video and post it on youtube or something so that it will be of better use. Let me know if that is a wise choice or will it be considered wrong by anyone, including BSNL?
