Unhappy BSNL internet connection getting disconnected

    Hi,

I am using a BSNL internet connection (wi-fi) and recently the technician replaced the modem. Now I'm experiencing frequent disconnections. The LEDs on the modem would be glowing, yet I would experience the red-cross symbol of disconnection. If however I click on "repair" it gets restored (mostly) but it is irksome as many times it fails to connect altogether.

Kindly let me know the reasons for the problem, possible solutions & what extra info u might need to resolve the issue. Thank you.

Actually the BSNL guy gave the following settings:
    Preferred DNS server: 218.248.240.79
    Alternate DNS server: 218.248.255.145

Should I change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

I tried that and re-booted the modem. The modem could connect instantly but the internet connection vanished (LED of internet wasn't blinking). So, i reverted back to "multimode" setting and the internet connection came back alive.

The encryption setting is 64bit and when i change it, it asks for 'pass phrase'??

Secondly, the key method is put as 'pass phrase' and NOT 'direct key' whereas my wireless key is my 10 digit mobile number. Remaining settings are as in the image. Kindly let me know if there ought to be some changes.

In the settings, channel selection is 'Auto' and 'Select channel' is 2

    Please guide me further..

    Dear essbebe,

I went through the link posted by you. However when I checked my modem setting, I found the following. Posting the screenshots for the same.

    Internet Connection Configuration

    http://img837.imageshack.us/i/bsnlicc.jpg

    Wireless Network

    http://img408.imageshack.us/i/bsnlwirelessnetwork.jpg

The wireless works at times only. Most of the times, it shows 'disconnection' (RED CROSS symbol) and if I search for the available wireless networks, it doesn't show mine in the list. At the moment, I've connected it through wire and it is working fine. Hence I don't think there should be a problem with the modem settings, as u say. What's ur opinion?

    @ gaurav200x

Not able to view images. Please correct it.

    1. Which mode are you in ? PPPoE or Bridge ?

PPPoE - Simply switching the modem ON is enough to connect to internet.

Bridge - You need to enter ID and password in a dialer.

If bridge, delete the connection and make a new one.

    2. Your SNR and attneuation values are poor. Get your line checked by the line man. Make sure that the line is free from joints and non insulated parts.

    done !!

    1. Check your LAN card.

I browse through wireless and not cable connection. However, the modem has both and presently, since the wireless is giving trouble, I have connected my laptop and modem through wire and it is working fine.

No bridge connection. It is a PPPoE.

Yes, I have raised the complain for the same as I was told that there is some problem with the "vertical" and was getting a lot of disturbance in the phone.

    4. Change the ethernet cable and try.

u mean the cable through which the modem is connected to the telephone line?

    1. Disable encryption and try.

    2. Choose channel selection as " manual " instead of " auto ".

    3. Select channel no as 11.

Well after trying the settings as u said, the wireless has connected and I'll wait and see how can it work without getting disconnected.

But if encryption is off, wouldn't others be able to connect to my wi-fi without password?

One more point, I have put the modem in my living room whereas my own room is rather inside around 5-7 metres away from the modem. Can this distance cause the wireless to disconnect due to the "distance" ???

We can add encryption later. This is to see whether the encryption is blocking the access.

What is the signal strength you are getting ? Just hold your cursor on the LAN icon in system tray and it will show.

    1. Under " Select security option ", select wifi protected access 2.

    2. Choose " Select encryption protocol " as TKIP protocol.

    3. " Select authentication method " as PSK ( pre shared key).

So what next? Should I wait for a few hours and see if it is working fine or should I try to change that setting right away?

When I am in the living room, it is 54 MBPS and in my room it varies between 1 MBPS to 36 MBPS, usually around 18 MBPS.

One more thing, the technician gave me a VMC AN 1020-21 while the modem initially installed when I took the connection was of Nokia Siemens. How would u rate the new VMC modem? Is it at par with Nokia Siemens or not good?

What should be put in WPA pass phrase? The value put is 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000

Your choice. You can try it whenever you feel comfortable. Try it now itself if you do not want to wait.

    My pass phrase is abcde123.

It seems you are getting very low signal at your room. Could be a cause for disconnection. Try any method to boost your signal like placing the router as in a open place which is high enough. Try to bring the modem as near as possible to your room.

I have not used VMC modem, but the firmware is similar to this one.

So should I leave it to the default value of 00000000000000000s

Actually the main problem is disconnection because while downloading through IDM I get a decent speed of 60-70 kbps and around the same in torrents while in my room. Most of my work doesn't get hampered as long as wireless is working !!

I have not used VMC modem, but the firmware is similar to this one.

I guess this means that this modem is nearly the same as Nokia-Siemens quality-wise?

    1. Change your password to say gourav123. That will be more comfortable and easy to remember.

    2. You will get a disturbed signal if signal strength is not good.

    This might help

http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...nge-cheap.html (Boost your wi-fi range. Cheap!)

    3. As I mentioned, I have never used that modem. But as far as reports in this forum, VMC seems to be a decent modem.

Actually, my password for my wi-fi was my mobile number. But here it says "WPA pass phrase". Is it the same thing?

Actually, signal strength hasn't been a big problem as long as the wireless doesn't get disconnected. But I'll go through the article & pm u if I need any clarifications.

Try giving your mobile no and check whether it works.

This is the final screenshot. I put my mobile number as the WPA pass phrase as in the image. Upon doing so, the internet got disconnected and i had to reboot the modem twice. However, now the internet connection seems to be working. Let me wait for another 24 hrs more before any further feedback.

Done ! Please let me know if there is any other setting that needs to be tweaked.

I am posting some more screenshots.... not sure if they're needed.

    ADVANCED WIRELESS CONFIGURATION

    ADSL CONFIGURATION

    LAN CONFIGURATION

if u need any screenshots of any other area to erase all possible sources of problem, please let me know.

    One more issue:

I have another laptop which I want to connect but even though it is showing the network in the list, it is unable to connect. I edited the configurations in the new laptop to encryption -> WPA-PSK and Data encryption -> TKIP. But it is unable to connect and when I check back the connection properties, it automatically switches to Network authentication -> Open and Data encryption -> WEP. Please help.

    Thanks a lot for responding
    modem- ADSL2+ CPE
    Model- AN1020-20
    Firmware version- 10.4.3.12.12

Have tried all of the above.... changing to PPPoE is not possible as it already shows as inactive... i think changing something else in the other settings might change it to active....haven't tried yet..It is by default in bridged mode

My broadband conn gives me no error while am surfing, but even then the lan shows me that my ip settings are not correct or there might be some issue with my broadband modem or network router....which i highly doubt since these drops in connection are quite periodic...every 15 minutes... so there has to be something else... I noticed that upon pinging bsnl servers, during those times they could not respond and the requests just timed out...
Am not an expert but i know there is something wrong with the dns servers...
