    Default connection very slow

I had taken a bsnl 256 kbps connection a month back and it is very slow.
Are these correct values for line attenutaion?
    -Downstram):28db
    -upstream: 16db

Initially it was faster than what it is now. I have to refresh the page for the page to load as the page gets connection time out.
What could be wrong? How to check the speed and what basic steps to do to sove this problem. Pls help...

We need some basic information for any trouble shooting.
Some may appear irrelavant to user, but needed anyway.

    essbebe,

First and foremost, sorry for the delay in answering to your post.

I did try the different DNS mentioned there. It made no difference to me. I have no idea on how to use TCP optmizer. I downloaded it. By looking at the different screen's , I did not want to try it as I had read that it can be effectively used only by a person who has good kowledge regarding networking.

SNR down and up is 24 and 27
Attenuation down and up is 28 and 16

    I use Teracome Type 1 model. T1-B-DSL699E9.4U6-5

I went to the uk link for testing broadband speed which you had mentioned and in that it showed

    Download speed : 272 kbps (34kB/s)
    Upload speed: 361 kbps (45.1kB/s)

Of course , the results vary from different sites such as speedtest.net and so on. I did not check my speed initially but when I felt it was slowing down with frequent disconnections randomly. Somedays it does not get disconnected. That was when I started to seriously think about it.

I am using FireFox 3.6.13. I have used CCleaner.

    1. I am not aware on how to use Tcp optimizer intelligently.
2.Different sites give different download and upload speeds.
    3. What to do regarding speed? I think you may be thinking that I am getting a good speed already or am i?

I hope I have answered all the points that you have asked.

    TCP/IP optimizer
Keep the slider at say 400 Kbps speed.
    Select Optimal values
    Recheck speed.
Mention browser used. IF IE7 upgrade to IE8 or try google Chrome. Opera.
    Firefox needs more memory

For the slider, among the different ranges give,I had to either keep it at 384 or the next range was at 512. I kept it at 384. I ran the test three times again...

    1. 308 kbps (38.5kB/s) 374 kbps (46.8kB/s)
    2. 287 kbps (35.9kB/s) 359 kbps (44.9kB/s)
    3. 254 kbps (31.8kB/s) 353 kbps (44.1kB/s)

I am using Firefox 3.6. I have 1.5gb ram. I doubt there is a problem with the browser as I was able to browser at good speeds with firefox earlier ....

Sometimes when I click on a link, it does not load, I have to press F5 two to three times atleast.

In the recent two weeks, I am getting frustrated even more. I was earlier watching live tv. Now I am seeing a time lag in watching it. Ex. It pauses for a few seconds, then plays, again pauses, then plays, and so on...

I don't know whether the following is relevant, but two weeks back I was using norton. I changed my antivirus to kaspersky internet security as norton was a trial version.

The problem with live tv suddenly is pissing me off with the broadband speed.

If you had taken a new connection all users were given speed upto 2 Mbps for first fifteen days and also unlimited download. later the speed is for the tariff plan you selected.
For video higher speed minimum 1 Mbps needed.
    Your modem/system seems Ok.

    Hi essbebe,

Thanks for the reply and for your analysis of the speed.

I had taken this connection in October 1st week. I started getting disonncections from November 2nd last week onwards. Then from December onwards, (after I changed the antivirus, dunno whether that is relevant here), I was seeing a lag in the online tv. Sigh.

And again thanks for your patience and also to meetdilip.

Download any file from Microsoft and report the speed here. It will give a good idea of speed.

256 Kbps = 32 KBps. Hope you are not confused about the nomenclature.

As mentioned, there was an unlimited for 15 days plan was effective when you took the connection. May be that is the reason of you see a dip in speed.

Me too was on 256 unlimited for a long time. Any thing around 25 -28 KBps is a good speed in this plan.

Thanks a lot for your patience dilip and essbebe

I did try chrome also, strange that it took longer to open sites compared to firefox. Perhaps you were right that initially they gave a good speed.

Anyway as suggested, I downloaded from Microsoft site and the speed was varying continously from 9kb to 34kb.

If the download speed was 56kb/ps then what would have been the actual broadband plan speed? 512kbps plan or 712kbps plan or ...

Also somebody who said that he was from bsnl called when i was not at home and asked the person who was at home to switch on the modem for upgradation. This happened for 3 days and I was not there. How can I find out if this was a genuine call ? I called up the customer care and they have no idea.

what should i do to get a seperate bill for broadband and seperate bill for phone under my plan?
