Question OpenDNS web content filtering on BSNL Home 750UL HELP!!!

Hi, i want to use opendns web content filtering on my modem IBall Baton iB-LR6111A but whenever i switch off my modem and restart it the ip address changes and i have to update it again by going to opendns website, even though i have the option of automatic updating client for windows and mac but no client for linux, i have two systems in my home one runs XP, and another runs ubuntu 10.10. i connect both systems to the same modem (by unplugging one and plugging the other to the same lan port), so i want to know how can i get statistic ip for my modem for using web content filtering. i have Home 750 UL plan. somebody please help.....

If you want to block some sites, use " host file method ". Edit the host file and add exceptions.

For external static IP, you need to pay for it. Alternative for it is to use Dyndns or NO- IP.

Wait... all you want to do is set your DNS manually?

    1. Use your router in router, not dial-up, mode.

    2. Uncheck the "obtain an internet address automatically" on your PC tcp/ip settings, specify an ip address and your chosen DNS.

--- yes. it is that easy. At least, for Windows, it is. I am not sure about Ubuntu graphical-interface method, but you can edit a couple of files. Here are my examples

    /etc/network/interfaces:
    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    address 192.168.1.4
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1
(there shouldn't be a blank line before address; system glitch with the indent)

    /etc/resolv.conf

    nameserver 192.168.1.1
Yes, I am accepting whatever the ISP hands out gets passed down to me, but you can specify your DNS address there. Please note the spelling of resolv.conf: not resolve

    Just use OpenDNS updater tool....
OpenDNS > Support > Knowledge Base > Client software for updating a dynamic IP in an OpenDNS network

It will keep running in your system tray and auto update each time you dial in.....

    Hang about! Stop! Wait!

This stuff is all about using dynamic IP addresses that can be accessed like fixed ones, isn't it? Prakash isn't seeking that: he is seeking to specify his own chosen DNS.

    Prakash...

Very large sledge hammer to crack the wrong nut!

You can forget about the router: just change the DNS address on your PC. See my previous post. That easy. Honest!
