Default LAN on desktop very slow, wifi working fine

I have a PC and a laptop. I use ethernet cable to connect to PC and wifi to connect to laptop. Everything was fine till today noon. But now a strange problem, net is not working in both Windows 7 and Windows XP ( I have both in desktop). In desktop, LAN is enabled and it shows connected. In both Firefox and Chrome I have set to open pages which I used to last time. It takes a lot of time loading.. but keeps on loading.

When I checked XP last time, somehow the LAN was disabled in XP. I enabled it. For sometime it shows " cable has been unplugged ". Restarting solved it but still not able to access net in both XP and Windows 7 on desktop.

I use Open DNS as primary DNS and Google as alternative. Laptop has XP home and I am posting using laptop.

My modem is AR800V V 3.0. Tried both Chrome and Firefox.

Any suggestion is always welcome. Thanks

if wifi mode is working but not LAN mode, suspect is the ethernet card.
    ( modem fault unlikely)
In Network settings page check "CONFIGURE" for network card
AND check different options. ( drivers etc )
Check cable :seating in PCI slot ethernet card.

Recently I had problem using IE8 browser to access Internet ( even un installed and reinstalled .
( firefox was working) .tried usual checks, but finally only System Restore helped.
I think there was a proxy application problem. But how FF worked no idea .

    Thanks essbebe,

    Will do that.

I pinged 192.168.1.1 and it gave less than 1 ms. Pinged Google too with good result.

I tried Opera , FF and chrome. Same in all, in both Windows 7 and Windows XP.

Another strange thing is that utorrent is able to upload at 40 KBps.

I tried flushdns and renew commands too. The page is loading. For example Google logs in to my account and shows " loading inbox" . but it keeps loading like that.

I repaired the connection in XP, tried troubleshooting with Windows 7, check the drivers too. No success. Even disabled the firewall and checked.

Will try system restore. Thanks for the inputs. Do add if you need any other info.

not able to access net in both XP and Windows 7 on desktop.
In Windows Explorer address bar type Google
To which browser you are directed ?
Check the Host file and delete all entries.
( Backup settings , just in case )

utorrent is able to upload at 40 KBps.
Try a download also with a download manager. re download any old application in list.
or open Yahoo Messenger or MSN messenger or SKYPE. or mail client OE outlook etc.

It is working fine now without making any changes. Checked both XP and Windows 7. Can it be a line problem ? But wifi was working fine. Confused but happy

Many thanks to essbebe and paul.1911.

    Nice tool. Will try.

Usually, only my network is within the range. Hope it will not comeback.
