    Default Problem on accessing another computer on a network.

    I have one dextop with windows xp pro sp3 and laptop with windows 7. They both are connected with home network. I can access files of another computer using its ip but not via its computer name. for ex. i go to run and type \\ip.of.another.computer and i was able to see files but when i type \\computer.name i won't see the files and error comes No Network provider accepted the given network path and this was happening in both computer, i tries all anti virus and windows firewall program disabled, and also have reset TCP/IP but the problem was not solved.

    any help would be appreciated.

    1. Check that the following services are running on all the computers

    * COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
    * Computer Browser
    * DHCP Client
    * DNS Client
    * Network Connections
    * Network Location Awareness
    * Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    * Server
    * TCP/IP Netbios helper
    * Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
    * WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
    * Workstation

    2. from command prompt, run the commands

    ipconfig/flushdns
    ipconfig/registerdns

    3. Since you can call the shares using ip, it may not be the case of firewall blocking file sharing. However ensure that the "File and Printer sharing" is ticked in exceptions list of Windows firewall.

    4. Easy way.....

    Add an IP alias to the hosts file in the systems.
    eg:

    96.30.37.142 indiabroadband.net bb

    you will be able to call indiabroadband by just bb by this......

    format:

    IP<space>computer.name<space>alias

    Not the correct solution to your problem though, still should work.......

    i have not install sp3 it was inbuilt. I format my computer on 11 Dec and run Network Setup Wizard it was working fine for 3 days. but i don't know why? I have not install or not try make changes to anything and this was happened automatically.
    On 1st time i use direct lan cable to run setup wizard after then, it was working with lan cable also and also through WLAN with router. but now I can't access files through WLAN but can through direct lan cable only with ip.

    My laptop with win 7 does not have any problem because it was working fine with another (my friend) laptop with win xp. but only problem i was always getting with dextop(xp).

    I can't see WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)

    This is only a shortcut, not a solution to your problem paul....
    We are giving the system's IP an alias....

    For eg, the IP 96.30.37.142 points to indiabroadband.net

    Just go to
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

    and edit the hosts file by adding the following entry
    192.168.1.2 paul-laptop laptop
    192.168.1.3 paul-desktop desktop

    IP's are just for reference only..... replace them with your IP's
    doing this, you should be able to call your laptop(name: paul-laptop) by just
    \\laptop

    and desktop by
    \\desktop

    Also make sure you have "Enable File and Print Sharing For Microsoft Networks" from Properties of Local Area Connection checked.....

    @ hitler517

    thanks for reply...but i don't know one strange thing was happening every time. when i ON my dextop i wont able to access files by IP but when i reset TCP/IP i able to access by IP only....and when i restart or ON pc next time it wont work again. Then I again have to repeat same steps.

    I have also search for problem in Microsoft and some other websites also but there was no such information is available in the net to solve this.

    there are two solutions are there from Microsoft
    1) Cannot access shares or printers across the LAN from Windows XP
    i have tried this and not solve

    2) I can't understand what to do here
    Err Msg: No Network Provider Accepted the Given Network Path
    i think this is for running program....and i think i dont need this.

    i think the only way to solve this problem is to format.
    what should i do now...should i?? or try for solution?

    I restart my computer. I wont able to access through IP. I open Network Connections I see that Lan was looking like this, not connected

    and then after resetting, it looks like this.

    and IP access works.
    now what should I do?...I updated the driver also.

    and one more thing is happening in my dextop that when I disable my Anti-Virus program i was able to access to net, but when I enable it pages were not opening but i can download. and firewall was disabled. no browser is working but torrent works.

    Try this hotfix for XP-sp3....
    Download details: Update for Windows XP (KB953979)

    Make sure you install the hotfix in the following manner..... Very important.....

    How to apply the hotfix

    1. Download the hotfix package.

    Important The remaining steps must be completed in Safe Mode.
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode.

    3. Extract the hotfix that you downloaded. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Double-click the hotfix package. This step extracts the Fixccs.exe file.
    2. Select a location to which you want to save the file.
    3. Click OK when the file is extracted.

    4. Locate and double-click the Fixccs.exe file. A Command Prompt window opens, and the necessary tasks are performed. The Command Prompt window closes automatically after all tasks are completed.

    5. When the necessary tasks are completed, restart the computer in normal mode.

    I'm very puzzled by this. RUN is for running programs, not for accessing files on another computer

    @paul.1911
    You are unable to use file sharing or browsing the network shares folder by using the computer name because of the problem you have in name resolution. and thats why you can only open the other network share folder using the IP address instead of the computer name. The problem in your WINS ( Short for Windows Internet Naming Service ) and NetBIOS

    Go to Network Setup Wizard for setting up the Network configuration. Go to Control panal and if you are in the Classic View then you can see the Network Setup Wizard and if you are in the Category View then go to Network and Internet Connection then Setup or change your home or small office network
    Setup the Network configuration from here and it may resolve your problem.

    I dont have your Computer in my hand so I cant give you where is the exact root of the problem. But the problem you have in your computer this is from name resolution it is sure. But where is from it ? It could be from your TCP/IP NetBIOS and WINS or could be from your Firewall you used which is blocking the NetBIOS and WINS. This is not possible from me to tell from a forum board " do that and this will sure solve your problem " but You have to try.

    Set up the Network Setup Wizard and select the option carefully when proceed and remember turn off any share folder and share drive before the Network Setup Wizard.
    Remember both computer should be in the same Workgroup and when you setup the Network Wizard select different computer name then the current one.

    RUN is for accessing shared files of another computer.
    Type the name of a program, folder, document or internet resource, and Windows will open it for you.
    Sorry: I hadn't realised that Windows was that stupid! It has just fallen yet another notch for me. ok, you are right, but to eliminate this awful ambiguity that MS has given us here, try using Network Neighbourhood, and not 'run' for checking out and accessing network resources. That eliminates the possibility of Win interpreting your url as a command.

    I done as u told but still i can access through IP only.

    I have collect some information for u guys....

    I found virus in this (dextop) C:\Windows\NLDRV\023\nvugart.exe and have deleted.

    and look at this

    Is this need to be Enable NetBIOS over TCP/P?????????
    It was in Default already in both computers
    I have tried enabling it...but nothing happened.

    From all the time i was thinking that my dextop has some problem, but i never think about my laptop.

    one day my friend bring his xp-laptop and i connect with my win7-laptop and also there was a same problem. The xp-laptop should not have any problem because it was only 3 days ago that i have formatted it.

    and when i connect xp-laptop with xp-dextop i wont able to access files via IP, may i done something wrong i don't remember....just leave it and

    my win7-laptop does not have any anti-virus program and i'm using internet also, maybe some file may corrupted, i'm not sure.

    any hotfix for window 7 ??
    Which version? genuine O.S ?
    try sfc /scannow
    Also download Microsoft Security essential anti virus application.

    The file you have reported can be for Nvidia application or a a virus.

    This is not possible for anyone to telling you from a forum board that where is the problem ? at least for me not possible untile I checked it myself.

    Quick solution is format your hard drive and reinstall the OS. if possible reinstall the OS on both Laptop and Desktop.
    But remember if the other drive has the virus on folder or in files it will again spread over the OS in drive C.

    Hi guys
    I have formatted my dextop and all things are working fine now but how long? that i have to see it.

    but there is some doubt in my mind that how to put ip...i mean what is the way, the procedure.
    In dextop i use
    ip address 192.168.1.10
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1

    and bsnl DNS -218.248.255.196
    218.248.255.197

    and in laptop i have two adapter LAN and WLAN
    in LAN i put same DNS and
    192.168.1.20 [here(20) i can use from 11 to ...]
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.1.10
    I want to ask that here in default gateway if i put any other value in place of 10 the network wont recognize and shows unidentified Network

    in WLAN i set it to Automatic

    now if i change dextop ip from 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.2

    and in laptop LAN adapter i put 192.168.1.3 and gateway as 192.168.1.2 then it works, if i put gateway as 192.168.1.1 then again it wont recognize.

    if i use 192.168.1.10 in dextop and 192.168.1.20 in laptop the WLAN works perfect.
    but if i use 192.168.1.2 in dextop and 192.168.1.3 in laptop the LAN recognize but WLAN not works. and if i try to configure WLAN ip it again not works.

    how can i use ip if i start 192.168.1.2 from dextop and all adapters should work and if in future i add another laptop with WLAN then how can i configure it without changing my dextop and laptop settings??? and all three together works.

    for transferring larger files i use direct lan cable otherwise i use WLAN.

    please give detail explanation or u can also give some other website address if u like...i want to make it clear the functions the truth about IP's.

    reading your post quickly (past bedtime!) I'm not clear that yuo are giving different IP addresses to WAN and LAN adapters on the same machine. I think you are. You should. All adapters should have unique IP, even if they are on the the same machine.
    192.168.1.10
    I want to ask that here in default gateway if i put any other value in place of 10 the network wont recognize and shows unidentified Network
    Your modem should have only one LAN address? That is the default gateway for each and every system on your network.
    how can i use ip if i start 192.168.1.2 from dextop and all adapters should work and if in future i add another laptop with WLAN then how can i configure it without changing my dextop and laptop settings??? and all three together works.
    Yes! You should be able to add over 200 pcs or laptops to your network and it should just work.
    .i want to make it clear the functions the truth about IP's.
    Suggestion, just before I turn off for the night: google TCP/IP basics

    Here's one site I found a while back.

    My TCP/IP textbook is so old that it does not even cover stuff like private networks (192.168.1.0 etc). When it was written, every single computer connected to the net had a public IP!

    @paul.1911
    What connection you used for connecting two computers ?
    Direct cable or a switch between two computers LAN cable.

    If you use direct cable then dont put gateway in the both LAN tcp/ip properties, only use IP address. For file sharing using direct cable ( p2p ) you donot need gateway and DNS. You canot use same gateway in direct cable or it will conflict and you see unidentified Network

    The methode you are describe in above your Desktop work as a server and your laptop is a client of your server ( Desktop ) because you are using direct cable with gateway.

    If you want to share internet on this two computers use a switch.

    Actually i have BSNL Type II modem Residential Router 1600, 4 LAN ports and 1 for wireless.
    I have only one LAN cable and which is connected with router to Dextop and laptop with WLAN.
    I mainly use dextop for surfing internet and use my laptop very often. Therefore i'm use DNS in dextop.

    when i run network setup wizard i put an IP on both LAN adapter and use direct LAN cable. means i pull out a LAN plug from router and insert it in laptop LAN. and then run. After the wizard completed i can transfer files easily, then i pull out lan cable from laptop and insert back into the router, and then i was also able to transfer files via WLAN.

    Now why i'm doing this all?
    because i use to transfer files all the time between these two computers.
    I use WLAN for transfer smaller files below 700mb, and also use for playing games. But when i need to transfer larger files of 2-4GB then again i use direct lan cable, pull out from router and insert it in laptop's lan, i'm do this because laptop WLAN is of 54mbps which takes very longer time for larger files.

    so this is what i do.

    and soon i will buy one more lan cable for my laptop also, only for transferring files and for optional i already have WLAN for other purpose.

    so this is what i'm asking if I put same IP on both adapter (laptop-LAN and WLAN) the WLAN does not work.
    so how can i configure it? because sometimes i add one more laptop via WLAN, so i want that, i should configure my both computers such that, i dont need to reconfigure it again if i add one or two laptops in the future for playing games or for sharing files.

    If I were you I'd get that second cable immediately!

    For now, one hint: never use the same IP address on two machines, or even on two network adapters on the same machine. Not even if the two machines are never connected at the same time.

    I'm not very good at theory. If you check out the link in my previous post, you could beat me at TCP/IP theory in a day! However... Part of the way the machines communicate is by one network device sending out a message asking, "will the machine who's IP address is nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn please send me its MAC (unique hardware) address". Swapping hardware with same IP address is confusing to this process. Eventually it will correct itself, or, of course, if you make the change with everything turned off, it starts from scratch. To avoid confusions in the first place: keep your IP addresses unique.

    Also, don't use wizards for configuration. You have no idea what Windows is touching or changing. I'm not using Windows just now, so this is from memory, hope it is correct...

    For Windows XP:

    Right-click Network Neighbourhood: select properties
    Right click appropriate device: select properties
    You should be able to find TCP/IP and double click or select and click properties.

    (from the screen you posted above, I think you know this anyway?)

    I have never done this in Vista or 7. It's probably changed just enough to be frustrating! That's microsoft

    Windows file and print sharing should just work anyway, without any of this tcp/ip stuff, just machines having different machine names but same workgroup name. but once you want to talk to the outside world, you need tcp/ip.

    Another miscelaneous hint. To test basic networkk connectivity, use ping in a command window.

    First try to ping your router:

    C:\ > ping 192.168.1.1

    You have to get this stage working first!

    Then try to ping your other machine by its IP number.

    Yes i can ping my router and both computer.

    I have 500c and don't want to make Always ON connection...i want to run both machines in a bridge mode. So,
    How can i make my dextop a Host computer for sharing Internet connection with other computers on a network or vice versa??
    both machines were connected to one router, one with LAN cable and another with WLAN, and both were sharing files.

    I cant see Internet Sharing option in my LAN adapter

    I just don't like bridge mode, and used it for about half an hour after the BSNL guy installed my first broadband connection here. I don't see any advantage to it, and I think that router mode gives you a level of security. With bridge mode, the internet reaches right into your computer; with router mode, it stops at the modem, and you have, at least, NAT between you and the rest of the world, even if you don't set anything else up.

    As far as I know, as soon as the home LAN becomes more than one machine and the router/modem, most people will advise, step one, use router mode. I'm not saying you absolutely have to --- but it is, simply, how networking works!

    Somewhere in Windows is "share a network connection with other computers". Or something like that. It goes back to dial-up modem days, and I don't know if it works with ethernet. It probably does. I haven't seen it for a long time, so I don't know how.

    Can't see your link: it just leads me to a webhosting site.

    <A FEW MINUTES LATER ... >

    Just paid a quick visit to WinXP.

    Here's the instructions, as per Microsoft: How to configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP

    But, guess what... on my LAN network connection there is nothing about sharing. Maybe it is not possible. Try yours...
