    Welcome to IBF.

It is advisable to get from BSNL. Otherwise they won't support in case of complaint. It is very unlikely that you get a replacement. However, you can check with BSNL and try your luck.

A new non wifi modem costs Rs.1,100 or Rs. 50 per month rent.

I am using AR800V v3.0 which is a wifi modem and comes at Rs. 80 per month rent. I used to have C2110. Both are good. But when buying from BSNL, you do not have a choice. You need to buy whichever is in stock.

If you had purchased outright no exchange possible.
If on rental basis, JTO may decide to replace the modem.
rarely a modem goes faulty ( mine AXMt882
    3 to 4 years old and Beetel 110BX 2 years old )
If you specify the problem, pwer adapter or
tried Fw update and "spoiled" the Modem, you can specify.
Only an ADSL modem may be availabe in open market for lesser price.
    Also DNa A212 -I 3-in 1 was priced at about Rs 1100/=

Try ebay.in for adsl modems . Used as well as new.

anyway you might have have to go for new one. But if you just think that a new modem would not fail, not proper.
we need to analyse why it could have failed. did you have any electrical fault like neutral break that has made 400line for your equipments?
did you have any lightening or water falling on the modem?
just for no reason a modem might not have failed.
this detailed study helps protect new one by taking suitable measures.
