THanks to many people who have innovative minds, here is a place where u can check your dataone usage.

    http://duf.sourceforge.net/

    Hi,

I lost my dataone username and password and not able to retreive it. BSNL is not helping out. Is there any way to retreive it. All along I never checked the useage but now I am downloading a lot and to be on the safer side I need to check the useage but have lost the username and password.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mathan.

Only the BSNL guys can help you with this. No one else will know your password except them and you. I wish you luck for extracting the info from them

Thumbs down Uncivilized and unprofessional BSNL SDE in Thurivallam Exchange

Thiruvallam BSNL Exchange- and its Uncivilized and unprofessional SDE
    Hello everyone

Thought of sharing an fortunate reality of BSNL Broadband connection and poor service in Trivandrum.
My Friend moved from a near by place to Trivandrum. He had a BSNL broadband connection plan where he pays around 5000/ Rupees every month.
When he moved to a place, which comes under Thiruvallam BSNL Exchange in Trivandrum, he requested for a transfer of his broadband connection.
He paid the entire transfer fee and he also paid for the modem rent to carry his modem with him. Since he is involved in research activities, he desperately wanted to have the Internet connection in his new home.
It was informed by fax and telephone messages from him old BSNL exchange to the new exchange about his transfer and from DGM office too it was approved.

When he approached Thiruvallam BSNL Exchange the SDE, she made him to walk up and down more than fifty times during the first week and denied a connection for him. He patiently waited for next week and approached her again, she started insulting him and use languages, which I cannot write here in this forum. She was rude and yelled at my friend not to go to her office again asking for Internet connection, as if he is asking for any personal favor from her.
He went to higher ups to request that his transfer has been approved.
When DGM himself involved in his case, and talked to that lady over phone. She connected the Internet connection in a port, which is not functional.

My friend went hundred times requesting for connection to a functioning port. He went up and down more than hundred times, taking two-week leave for getting BSNL Connection, which has been already approved.
The lady SDE in Thriruvallam exchange started insulting him again and she used caste based discriminative langagues, which is much barbaric and uncivilized.

My friend is without Internet connection for last two months and now he gets a bill of 5000 Rupees this month, for the Internet connection he never had.

Requesting anyone from this forum, who is in Trivandrum to inform BSNL Trivandrum about this Thiruvallam exchange and report about this unprofessional and uncivilized behavior of this SDE.

Customers need better treatment from BSNL.
Or BSNL will find its own way out from people very soon.

Thumbs up Looking for BSNL broadband connection

    Hi All,
Nice seeing all of your post and which really promted me to join in this group.

I am yet to apply for a connection. I am now using SIFY Broadband and moving to a place where I cannot continue the same. which is basiccaly compelling me to move towards BSNL.

I normally use more than one PC in home where, I make internet connection available to all of them making one system as proxy server.

Now my question is whether can I use BSNL Broadband for more than one system with their home plans in the same way. Please share ur views with any other solution.

    Thanks.

I just got a dataone connection Home 500 plan.

First day i had a problem in connecting. The user name in my UT STARCOM300R2U had been changed to multiplay and i could not browse any website even thought my modem was on.

Then i created a dial up connection and selected broadband. I gave my dataone user id and password and clicked dial and it got connected immediately (i guess this is what is called as bridge mode)?. When i connected this way, i could browse and i could download 420MB on UTorrent in one hour.

Since i am a newbie, please do guide me on the optimum configuration for my modem and for UTorrent. I plan to download a lot during the 2-8 free time.

I checked the many help-posts but i could not understand them.

Please do help me guys. I will be very grateful

    1. Application
    2. Installation
    3. Experience
    4. Summary

    1. Application:

Well the application process is very simple. You need to go to your nearest exchange and collect a free application form. This same form is available online too but the quality of printout is very poor. There is an option of online submission of application and unlike popular belief, this system still works (well in principal at least). I first applied online and within 2 days I received a call from BSNL asking me to come over to the office and submit the application manually. So I can say that atleast the online system works.

There was an exchange just 500 meters away from my place and that is where I collected my form and went to submit. But they told me that my number does not fall into their area and I needed to go to an exchange about 2 km from my place just to submit the form. So keep this in mind while submitting your application. Your exchange information is usually printed on your phone bill. They asked me to bring along a previous telephone bill, but did not even have a look at it when i submitted the application. My advice, bring it with you - just in case.

The lady asked me if I wanted the connection on a new line or on an existing line. I, for one, have my PC in a separate room. So I preferred a new line but she told "In that case you need to wait at least 15 days for the new line to be installed and then you can have broadband." I was in urgent need of connectivity and so opted for connection on my existing line after her assurances that the lineman will do the necessary wiring to my room.

The submission was relatively very easy. I handed over the form to the lady, she asked me about the modem I wanted. I specifically mentioned that I wanted a type 4 modem. She told me that it was not available and so suggested a type 2 modem (you can check the differences b/w them by visiting the BSNL website). Since I had no choice, I opted for that and paid the 1872 bucks for the modem as outright purchase option (I prefer to purchase over monthly rent). She then did some clicking on her PC and told me that my phone line is active for internet use but I need to wait for the modem (router) to arrive at my place. I asked her about a rough time frame when I can expect the delivery. She said "about 10-15 days" and handed me over a printout of the bill.

That was the end of application.

    2. Installation:

Barely 3 days after my visit, I had 2 ppl deliver the modem to my place in the evening. I was surprised to find such a speedy service by BSNL. These ppl were supposedly the technical dept guys and sat at my place for about 30 minutes explaining the benefits of BSNL (for crying out loud, I already know it). After reading through the posts at indiabroadband I did inquire if I can later shift my connection to my nearby exchange as it might provide me better speeds. His reply "Well there is no need for that, as I am sure you will get decent speeds with this exchange too. Plus if you shift to another exchange, your phone number will change".

They left soon enough after providing me with the contact information of the lineman who would come to my place the next day to complete the wiring. That was really nice, I thought.

The next day I waited up to 3 PM and then called that number to inquire if they planned to come that day. Unfortunately their schedule was tight and they rescheduled me to the next day. I thought this could go for ever. The next day, however, they did turn up. They asked me where I want the line to be installed. After reviewing the place, they told me that I'll need some extra wiring and they needed 300 bucks for materials. I knew that BSNL provides free wiring and they were asking for a bribe but after going through the delay experienced by a few members of indiabroadband, I decided it was not worth the wait. So I paid them 300 bucks and they started working (after going out for a few minutes to make me think that they're away to purchase the wiring).

I must say they did work pretty hard as I am not a person easily pleased. I asked them to make sure that none of the wiring should remain open. Everything must be concealed. It took them nearly 2 hours to do the work which usually takes only 10-15 minutes but they did not complain (I guess I can attribute it to the 300 bucks I paid them). So finally they provided me with the contact information of some guy who will come to my place for the configuration of the modem.

Interestingly 30 min after they left, I got a call from the configuration guy to check if he can come over in 10-15 min. He turned up after 1 hour (but I'm not complaining) and it took no more than 5 minutes to configure the router. He showed me how to check my usage and he was off. So my connection was up and running

    3. Experience:

Well the speeds sure was fast as far as the daytime browsing is concerned. I got decent speeds and almost all the web pages opened in a second. I did a speed test at DSL reports and the results are as follows

DL speeds = 500 kbps approx
UL speeds = 250 kbps approx

    So the speeds were sufficient.

The only thing I did not like about BSNL the dataone usage page. It requires only IE to function properly. That was a shock for a firm supporter of open source software like me. I had to install IE core and used a IE render plugin in Firefox to open the page. Nevertheless, I had to install IE. I run on a dual boot PC with XP and Ubuntu and I couldn't figure out how to check my usage on ubuntu as it only has Firfox by default and I cant install IE core on linux. So any suggestions are welcome for that aspect.

I know that downloads can be scheduled to use the night unlimited bandwidth but since it was my first night of testing, I was awake till 2AM yesterday and added my first torrent download to utorrent. I was totally shocked by the download speeds. A paltry 5KBps (i.e. about 40kbps). I thought maybe it was just the beginning and so I went to sleep and this morning I checked my downloads - the results are not that encouraging

    Total time = 6 hours 0 min
    Total Downloaded = 120MB
    Total Uploaded = 15.9 MB
Avg Download speed = 5.7 KBps
Avg Upload speed = 0.7 KBps ( I actually limited my UL speeds to 1KBps )

The torrent cannot be at fault because there were more than 50 seeds and 78 lechers (It is a very popular game). However I cannot rule out the possibility that torrent might be choked... Or there could be an issue with a software firewall that I am using. So tonight I will try it with another torrent download (ubuntu linux distribution) with the software firewall disabled and see if the speeds still suck.

After this shocking incident I checked my data usage and was in for another treat. At 1.20AM in the night my data usage was about 4MB, followed by "unlimited download" of 120 MB, my PC automatically shut down at 8AM. But my data usage is something like this

Unlimited usage = 12MB approx (as BSNL give usage in the format of 0.012 GB)
Total chargeable usage = 35MB (including UL and DL)

This calculation makes no sense. It seems that their system is flawed and I am taking no risks today. I will program my PC to turn on at 2.15 AM and shut down at 7.50AM to be on the safer side of the spectrum and will let you know if this tactic works.

    4. Summary:

To summarize my experience, BSNL does provide fast internet access during the daytime and is suitable for most novice users who rely on using the internet for communication purposes. However, if you are a heavy downloader, like me, give it a thought cause you might land up in a tight situation. I can give you a final summary only tomorrow morning because by that time I would have surely ascertained whether my abysmal DL sppeds are due to a faulty torrent or a sloggy connection.

I hope this helps for all those users who plan to apply for BSNL experience

    Lightbulb hey guyz

    hii guyz
i was lukin forward 2 some kinda forum like dis since ages
i had a lot 2 say abt da crazy **** called "bsnl broadband aka dataone" but just didnt find a place to do tat ..
at last ma search is over !!

i hv been using bsnl broadband ever since it was launched .. i suppoz 2 yrs
i had a few questions in ma mind b4 goin 4 dataone coz i alwayz knew tat bsnl is a pain in da ass ... but still i did it just 2 find tat i waz wrong
    i wud like 2 share a few things wid u ..

    1. Firstly i hv seen tat loadz of ppl r complainin abt da inefficiency of bsnl to record there data usage [ nite unlimited ]
just assume tat u "CONNECTED" ur net at 1.45am n "DISCONNECTED" at 2.15 am .. nd downloaded arnd 4gbs
than dese dumb asses will charge u around 315 mb .. and there calculation goes like this
    390 min - 4096 mb
    so 30 min [1.45am to 2.00am and 8.00-8.15am] - 315mb
    tats wat i hv experienced
so nxt time u plan 4 massive downloads, than better adjust ur watch acc to bsnl

    2. U all must b knowing tat neone who knows ur username password can log on using ur acc irrespective of the fact tat his landline no. is diff
or in short ur accounts are nt constrained to ur landlines
i had a strange problem 2 weeks ago
i had d/l around 40gbs till 14th aug[HOME 500 user] .. wen i connected to net in the afternoon .. it showed an error saying username password invalid ..
and wen i logged on to dataone site using my frenz account .. my username password were absolutely correct ..
i was surprised to see tat .. it took 15 days 4 those bsnl guys to amend my problem .. and when i asked them the reason for this, they said
"Sir u were a huge downloader so we tried to constrain ur connection to only your landline" .. it surely helped .. and due to bsnl`s network fallacies even i could not connect to internet.. huh
at last they unchecked the constraint and than i was able to access my internet again

3.I was using huawei MT880 till now .. just switched over to Dlink GLB 502 today as the huawei modem`s some IC short circuited .. nd thus it was rendered unreparable
i m definitely happier wid dlink .. better features .. better security nd ething just perfect .. m luvin it !!

4.I am a huge movie buff n thus at least d/l 5 movies a day
i use ares and bitcomet .. nd get a d/l speed of around 200-220kBps
if somebody gets a better speed plz get back to me n temme how ???
i hv even increased my half open TCP connections to 500

tats all for today .. plz let me know if u find da abv info useful

Yes you can connect both your machines but you would need a wireless router if you want to use wifi but if you want it wired then just create a home network and connect both the machines and you can use the internet on both at one go

As for as qos is concerned... i have had a gr88 relationship with BSNL... i`m in home 1800 plan.. which gives me 10GB traffic every month with night unlimited( 2:00-8:00 ) . I keep important data to download in the day time.... and at night i get to download free 5.5GB of data ! thatz cool as for as i`m concerned.. I get noghting less than 2Mbps 24hrs... sometimes therz decrease in browsing speed due to latency issues for ADSL lines.. apart from that... itz just fantastic.

    1. Torrent Downloads

If you are a heavy torrent downloader, then there is some bad news for you. BSNL connection does not seem to work with security measures like ZoneAlarm firewall and PeerGuardian. With these two applications running on your PC, your download speeds may come down to as low as 5KBps or even less (as I found out over the last 2 days).

If you disable these security measures, then the connection speeds are decent and you will get avg download speeds of upto 100KBps in torrents.

    2. Data Usage page

The dataone portal which lets you check your usage is quite confusing... I do not understand a thing by the way they display your usage. Take the image below for example. It shows my data usage for yesterday night. My connection was active from 1.45AM to 8.01AM in the morning. and I downloaded about 1.7GB in that interval of which about 30 MB was b/w 1.45AM and 2AM... So technically I should be charged only 30MB and the rest should go into the unlimited bandwidth. But the way I interpret my usage charges is that they charged 129MB in unlimited usage and the rest as chargeable data. If this is true then I'll have to limit my usage for the next 29 days as I have only 500 MB left.

If anyone can make any sense of the above data and finds that my findings are incorrect, then please guide me - How should I interpret the data usage charts?

To disable zonealarm just right click on the zonealarm icon on your desktop tray and you will see "shutdown zonealarm" option, just click on that zonealarm will be shutdown till you restart your computer again. Not sure about peerguardian, as i am not using it at this moment.
