    Unhappy Suggest modem for bsnl

    Hi,

I bought my modem from bsnl 18 months back. The model number is ITI DNA-A211-I.
I had updated it's firmware 12 months back. It was working fine till last week.
Since last week it has started rebooting continuously!

I complained to bsnl and asked them to replace my modem. But they said you get only 6 moths warranty when you buy modem from bsnl. And they don't have modems in stock!

Whats wrong with my modem? Is it repairable?

If I have to buy new modem which one is the best and durable?
Please mention price if you know it.

    Thanks in advance

How many systems ( desktops/laptops ) in use?
adsl modem only ( Rs 500 onwards) and 3-in-1 modem/wifi routers like DNA A211-I (Rs 1500on adsl modem onwards ) available.
    Check ebay.in for price comparison.
    Option 2:
Rent another wifi router from BSNL. will be replaced without
    time limit !!!
    Option 3:
    Post Device info/statistics/Adsl data here.
    or compare these. copy/paste here.
    wait.... only these needed>
    Mostly a stable connection.

if you were using "Always On" PPP/PPPoE mode
( userId/PW entered in modem wan page )
you have to reconfigure the modem.

    If You were on "Dialer"mode
    ( UserID/PW entered in Computer Window )
you may get connected to Internet.

    Copy/paste following data
    ipconfig /all

Thanks for all the replies. My modem is dead! It doesn't start only. No lights glows.
    So I couldn't reply promptly.
I'm thinking of buying Netgear WRG614. Is it any good?

Bsnl people couldn't tell me which modem brand they will sell me, so I decided to buy a third party modem.

If you have any suggestion as to which modem I should buy please let me know.

    Default This sucks !

Dewd... Info to all posters in this thread, the DNA A211-I is a failure model and BSNL has acknowledged the fact that this is a faulty modem by design.

Various people have posted fixes including modding hardware but it never works.. No matter how many times you flash the mode it will work for some time and restart, once it does that all settings will be lost and you would need to remove all WAN types in advanced setup and add PPPOE again.

It basically resets the entire modem settings to default including your password. It may automatically work..like BSNL telephones go dead for no reason and start workign for no reason ..

    Just some info !

    I have a basic question:

for BSNL broadband, do we need a "router+modem" ot just a "router"?
Yesterday I checked router+modem cost around Rs. 3000!
And routers like Netgear WRG614 costs around Rs. 1500!

    Is ITI DNA-A211-I a router+modem?

Should I get the modem from BSNL only? What's your suggestion guys?
    Thanks in advance

BSNL DNA A212-I or Ar800V3 are the only two models
being issued by BSNL now , it seems.
Different companies make the same and give their own brand names.

Whats wrong with my modem? Is it repairable?
After all settings are made Go to Management tab, and click Save/Reboot. Wait for two minutes.
Go to Diagnostics page and report fai entries.
    or Deviceinfo/statistics/ADSL data.

Better to rent a adsl modem/+4lanport+WIFI router from BSNL.
( above models combined Modem+wif router)
If you search in ebay.in you may get these models for Rs 1500/ or so.

eBay India: Edimax BR-6204 WLg Wireless Router (3 Years Warranty) (item 330520554445 end time 24-Jan-2011 23:37:00 IST)
A user has also posted here the cost of different modems used as
well as new. You can contact him.
    wait ..... searching

Actually no light (PWR, ADSL, INET etc) is glowing after I connect the modem to PC. Pnly on light glows and that is Lan line 1 light. Even PWR light is off!
So I'm not able to open the modem settings page. Hence cannot post the device info data.

If I rent the modem from BSNL, I will never own it. And I will be paying 40/80 rupees per month in rent! Is it a good idea?

You spent Rs 2000/= purchasing outright a modem/router from BSNL. It has worked for 18 months 18X80=Rs 1440/=
Now you OWN a "dud" unit !
Contact Mr Deepak Yadav for new working modem/wifirouter, with some discount for your unit..

    No exchange possible with BSNL.
Invest another Rs 2000/= with BSNL> or buy new one from outside market.
You can own a rented unit any time . 50% of rent paid will be deducted from the cost of the unit. In efffect You will own it after approx 3 years without further rentals.
    {website of BSNL FAQ45 in Broadband.}
Get replacement any number of times if the unit does not work.

I went to a dealer to inquire about modems. But, he confused me. He says that I need a "modem+router" which costs around 3000 rupees!

So I want to know, do we really need a "modem+router" for bsnl broadband?

I though we just need a router. Please let me know.

Yes, unless you already have a modem, you need to purchase a modem cum router. You can get one from BSNL for Rs. 80 per month rent or Rs. 1,800 outright purchase.

BSNL doesn't have type II modems in stock!
They have type I modem and it costs around 1140. I think it's way to costly for a modem that's not wireless!

could be a very minor fault with dc to dc converter inside.
perhaps your local computerhardware repairers could help you repair it.

    make a try?

You can try and get from another exchange. There is a provision for that. Earlier a few members got the modem this way.
