    Default Default connection in laptop

    Hello,
Thanks for the guidance offered to me a few months back regarding vuze connection.
Now I got a new Dell laptop a few days back. I wanted to connect to internet through it also. I have a desktop already which has bsnl bb connection through nokia siemens wireless router.
When I created a new network connection in the laptop, it offered me to connect through the "default" connection. I clicked connect, and well I could use net through my laptop also, without configuring anything. Is it okay?
I think it was possible because I am on PPoE (for vuze/utorrent).
For the default connection it says:
    Singnal strength: Excellent
    Security Type: unsecured
    Radio Tag: 802.1g
    SSID: Auto
1.Now what does this unsecured mean? Is it safe to use net on laptop?
Both pc and laptop are at home only.
    2. I read in the forums advice to some one to connect the laptop also to the modem athrough RJ45 etc. and change some settings. Should I go through it all?
    3. To share files and data should I set up home group. I read that for that the connection name should be changed from default. How to do it?
    4. Any more advices regarding pc-laptop sharing the same modem such as speed issues, download issues.
    Thank you

Presume you are in PPPoE. You can secure your connection by adding an encryption (in my case, Wifi Protected Access 2(WPA2)). Simply configure the encryption in the wireless page. Othewise, anyone can access you wifi with in the range of your wifi signal.

Can you please elaborate how I can do it?
Can I set this through either pc or laptop?

I think I found that also in the laptop once, one "other network" which was secured and WPA2.
But when I switch on the laptop and start windows it is not there by default. I will be presented with two options only. "default" which has excellent signal strength, and "auto" which has poor signal strength, and which asks me for SSID.
The "other network" which is secured is not always there. It may the pc that is referred by it.
Please elaborate how can secure my wifi, and clear my other doubts also.

    1. Type 192.168.1.1 in your browser ( Can be through Laptop or PC, doesn't matter).

    2. ID and password is admin.

    3. In the landing page, find LHS menu, select " wireless ".

In that page you will find an option to set encryption for your connection.

Set the SSID as you like. Even your name will do. Now in the laptop, under wireless connections, you will find your SSID, choose it and give the password you have set. Now you will be able to connect to net. Others who may also see the SSID, cannot connect as the connection is encrypted and need the password you set.

Well, I tried what you advised.

In the DSL router wireless page when I selected the WPA2 for Network Authentication no network key was asked for.
When I selected the open option, WEP encryption was available which asked me to provide characters for 128-bit or 64-bit encryption. I selected the 128-bit encryption, and gave the network key of my choice.
When I reconnected through laptop, it sure did ask me for network key, which I provided. So the security tag is now WEP, is it okay?

    2. When I reconnected, still I found the auto connection, what is this?
    3. I found another connection tikona 1800.....something. what is this? Was it some nearby wifi?
    4. I again saw the other network with WPA2 security whose signal is poor. Was it also some neighbour?

I think you have done it properly. Once the password is entered, it will be saved in the system. You need not enter the password every time. If you are still confused, change your password and try connecting again. It will not connect automatically. The other networks may be of your neighbours' who fall within your range. Do not attempt to connect through those network as it is nothing but stealing and they may find out.

You can change the auto connect to manual from your wireless card configuration from the laptop.
tikona is a wireless ISP, you have to get a plan from them to use it, if you try to connect, it will take to a page from where you have to login with your user id, password to use the net.

    Thank you Dilip,
But still some doubts, please clarify them.

    1. You said your security is of type WPA2. Why couldn't I set it up (no password or netkey option found there)?

    2. My laptop is asking me for ssid everytime I try to connect. It's not getting connected automatically as you said. But my desktop which is connected through the cable is not asking for any password, and it is on "always on mode" only. Why is it so?

Normally it should work. Try again and check.

Nothing wrong in it. Change it as default connection. Go to Networks connections and set it as default. In PPPoE (Always ON ) mode, there is no need to click " connect ". The connection is dialed in the modem itself and is ready to connect. So no need for you to enter ID and password in your desktop. After you set it as default connection, your laptop will also connect automatically to your wifi connection.

I have selected TKIP. Post a screen shot of your " wireless " page.
