I suggest you do what i did. Get a wireless LAN card or USB adapter for the desktop, the wireless LAN does not need any extra setup with the modem/router, only a small confguration - I am able to use both laptop and desktop simultaneously.

Smile Making a LAN using the Huawei WA1003A

Hi, I am back. i forgot my password for kvk_1986 so i had to create a new account :-).

well, after my last reply, i went and did some tinkering and here is the answer !

First of all, I will tell you what I did and made it work. Pretty simple, I have two laptops and a desktop - the IP addresses are 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.3 for each of them, respectively. They are all running either Windows 2K Professional or Windows XP. All are on wireless connections. But it does not matter what type of physical connection you have.

Now , in all the computers, I have administrator rights , so i log in as administrator with the respective password. I am able to surf independently in each of them, as I said earlier.

You can use any other account, but it is preferable to have administrator rights for your login account in order to tweak around in case of any problems.

Now, when I ping the IP addresses of the other two machines from any one machine, I am able to get the response. So what i do is , in each of these machines I share the folders that I wish to use from the other machines. Give permissions to everyone-> full control. (I presume you know how to do this ;-)).

Then log into one machine, lets say the laptop with IP = 192.168.1.2.

From the task bar, select Start->Run ->\\192.168.1.100. (which is the other machine).
You will be propmted for a user name and password. (Remember, both - username and the password are case sensitive. !) Enter the login name and the password (that you would normally use to log into the other machine)

I type "Administrator" for user name and enter the password. And Voila !! This opens the Windows explorer showing the folders that are shared on that machine. If you want to stay properly organised, make a top level folder and put all the others inside. Then it will be easy to view the content.

So when you see this shared folder in the explorer, right click on the folder and select "Map Network Drive" option. The dialog will show the path
(<b>\\192.168.1.100\shared_folder_name</b>) and a predetermined drive name like "X:\". Click on Ok. Also make sure you check the "Reconnect at Logon" check box. This will ensure that every time you log on to this machine and the other mahine is powered on, this system will automatically connect to the other one and you have the folder available for viewing in your Windows explorer. It is like viewing another folder in your local system.
Do the same in the other machines and you have a (W)LAN.

Let me know if you have any problems.

    Regards
    Chary BS

    Default

I have a laptop running Vista Premium and a PC running XP Pro.

I'm just not able to link them both though I'm able to surf from both of them /out any hassle.

    Here's my configs

    Hardware :
    ADSL Router - HUAWEI WA1003A
Desktop PC - running Windows XP Pro connected through RJ45
Laptop - HP Pavilion running Vista Premium connected through Wireless

    IP SettingsADSL Router - 192.168.1.1
    Desktop PC - 192.168.1.33
    Laptop - 192.168.1.34

File Sharing enabled on both systems
Preferred DNS set to 192.168.1.1 on both systems
Secondary DNS set to BSNL servers
Workgroup name common on both systems

    Thanks
