Thumbs down BSNL Blocking Torrent Sites

    Guys,

Do you all know BSL started blocking torrest web sites....

demonoid.com was the latest site which was blocked.

But, there is a way to access it... go to proxyhero.com and access the website from there...

this is just ridiculous, how can they block the torrent websites without any intimation....

I have not encountered this problem yet. But I do face some trouble downloading torrent files from torrentspy.com. I just do a few page refreshes and somehow manage to DL the files.

If BSNL starts blocking torrent networks, then it will rapidly loose customer base (esp the young ones).

I've confirmed it... BSNL has definitely blocked the demonoid site... a DNS ping shows that the site is up and running with a ping time of 59ms.. So it is definitely a blocking problem...

Now we need to check if BSNL is blocking only the site or the tracker as well.. Ask some of your friends to send you a file shared on the demonoid tracker with DHT (distributed hash table) off and try to DL that file with a torrent client and lemme know if it works or not.

I will try from my end and give you the results pretty shortly

I have tried browsing demonoid.com via a web proxy site and downloaded a torrent.. and I am able to download the same... which means they have blocked the site and not the tracker url.... (atleast)

Did you check whether the DHT was off or not? Because in DHT enabled torrents, even if the tracker is offline, users can share and DL files. You can check the status of DHT by looking at the general properties window of the torrent file in a client like utorrent. (I dont know the position of the DHT status window in other clients)

though they have blocked this site...
try using this via Proxy Hero - Start Using CGI Proxy, Unblock Websites
it works fine... without any problem....

I just got a dataone connection Home 500 plan.

First day i had a problem in connecting. The user name in my UT STARCOM300R2U had been changed to multiplay and i could not browse any website even thought my modem was on.

Then i created a dial up connection and selected broadband. I gave my dataone user id and password and clicked dial and it got connected immediately (i guess this is what is called as bridge mode)?. When i connected this way, i could browse and i could download 420MB on UTorrent in one hour.

Since i am a newbie, please do guide me on the optimum configuration for my modem and for UTorrent. I plan to download a lot during the 2-8 free time.

I checked the many help-posts but i could not understand them.

Please do help me guys. I will be very grateful

    Default uTorrent Configuration

    @ ashwinsid

Lemme try to help you configure uTorrent. I am assuming that you do not have a problem with accessing the net anymore.

Go to uTorrent and Options >> Preferences >> Scheduler

Click & Hold your left mouse button and drag over the time slot b/w 2:00-2:59 to 7:00-7:59 for all days of the week. Make sure that the color of the boxes is dark green (which means full DL/UL speeds) and not light green (Limited speed) or white (no DL/UL)

Also make sure that the check box next to disable DHT when turning off is enabled (i.e. checked).

That's about it for configuring uTorrent.

    -----------------------------------

Now there have been instances when BSNL does miscalculate the bandwidth usage even when you're downloading in the free usage time. Most of the times this is partly due to the fact that users keep their PC switched on at an earlier time (for e.g. from 10-11 PM onwards) assuming that the uTorrent scheduler will automatically start DL when it is 2 AM. Same applies for the 8:00 AM deadline too.

The best way to circumvent this issue is to manually start uTorrent at 2:05 AM (just to give a leeway of 5 min) and start the DL and manually switching off the PC at 7:55 AM. Now I know that it wont be possible to do this everyday but it is the only 100% working option.

The other option of owners of latest PC's (from mid 2006 onwards) is to setup a BIOS wake up alarm. It is a small setting in the BIOS (don't ask me details about this cause it'll take me very long to write about the detailed navigation of all the diff BIOS's available out there) where you can specify a time when the PC will automatically boot up (you must have autologin or no username/password on your PC). Then you can have uTorrent in startup and it'll start your downloads.

One more option (untested but should theoretically work) is to have your PC turned on from anytime you want (e.g. 10 PM) and have uTorrent in a list of scheduled tasks (it should be in control panel) which should start at 2:05 AM. The only issue I see with this method is that although uTorrent will start at 2:05 AM, your PC is still turned on for a long time and there are bound to have some packets transferred in the background (like your Anti-virus update, windows update, etc) which might use up some bandwidth.

The best method for an automated switch off is a handy little freeware called "Switch Off" (how convenient ). I've added a link but just in case it gets filtered, try google search and it should come off as the first search result. Only 66KB in size but a handy little app with all the features to automate shutting off your PC (including remote switch off). Make sure you check the "Force applications to quit" option if you're using this app.

Hope this little tutorial helps you with your downloads.

    Cheers
    Vzx

Default dEMONOID TAKEN OFF DUE TO COPYRIGHT INFRINGMENT

The site is off due to copyright action. It's not BSNL blocking the site.
