Default Need help configuring Dataone UT300R2U and Linksys WRT54G

    Hi Admin,

I saw your step by step guide to the HUWAI modem and a wireless router. It was great. I tried configuring my UT300R2U modem and the linksys WRT54G wireless router on those lines and failed. Over the past week I have tried all the tricks up my sleeve and used a fair part of my logical thinking (I'm not a sys admin).

Both these units have DHCP, Firewall, and a whole lot of other options that I can't figure out what to disable/enable in which unit.

    Kindly help.

    Thanks,

    Jp

    @jifi,
You can connect your Linksys WRT54G wireless router to UT-300R2U to create a wireless network at your home. Please note that you must connect the LAN port of UT-300R2U to one of the LAN ports of WRT54G. Connecting to the internet port of WRT54G may or may not work. It does not for me.

Also note that DHCP cannot be ON on both routers (UT-300R2U is a modem+router).

    You have two options:

    1. UT-300R2U as the main router and WRT54G as a Wireless Access Point
    a) Connect your PC/Laptop to UT-300R2U using the USB port. Configure your UT-300R2U as usual using a wired connection (http://192.168.1.2)
    b) Use PPPoE as your connection method; enter your BSNL username/password
    c) DHCP should be ON
    d) Ensure that you can connect to the internet.
    e) Connect the UT-300R2U to WRT54G using an ethernet cable (LAN Port of UT-300R2U ---> Lan Port 1 of WRT54G)
    f) Connect a PC/Laptop to Lan Port 2 of WRT54G using another ethernet cable.
    g) Configure the WRT54G from the configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)
    h) Use PPPoE as your connection method; enter your BSNL username/password in the fields
    i) Enable WEP or WAP security; note down the key value
    j) Finally turn DHCP = off in your WRT54G setup. Note that you will not be able to access the WRT54G setup page once you turn DHCP=off. Hence this should be done last.

    2. UT-300R2U as bridge and WRT54G as a Wireless Router
    a) Configure your UT-300R2U router in bridge mode with DHCP = off. The manual on the CD should tell you how.
    b) Configure the WRT54G as above leave DHCP = on

Option 1 is suggested when at least one PC/Laptop is connected to UT-300R2U via USB and others connect to internet via WRT54G.

Option 2 is suggested when all PCs/Laptops connect to internet in wireless mode.

Always turn wireless security on (WEP or WPA).

    Edits to the previous reply:

Option 2 aka Bridge Option: There is no need to turn DHCP=OFF on the BSNL (UT-300R2U) router.
