    Default Bsnl?

    Hi there
I currently use a Tata Indicome Plug2Surf modem dl 16kbps here, in Govardhana (UP) 20km from mathura... My house is under a Kilometre away from the BSNL exchange.
Around 5-6 years ago we had a bsnl normal internet connection (not broadband) and they severly cheated us + plus a LOT of downtime... Is it better now?
We are considering getting a new Landline and the the BBG Combo ULD 1350 (4 Mbps upto 20 GB, 512 Kbps beyond 20 GB) as we do download quite a lot....
We dont want to pay over usage charge if we go over a "limit"
anyways... is BSNL any good? Over in this town only 5-10 people have Broadband. does this mean we will get better speeds?
We do not NEED a landline..... but i think we have to get one other wise they wont give BB. Back before when we had a landline BSNL cheated us byy giving HUGE bills with calls to places that we never called. they dont do this now?

Also if we get the above mentioned plan can i somehow connect the modem to a Belkin router?>

Default Yes for BSNL BB -you need a land line.

    1. you can choose a plan where there is no rent for the new land line (but no free calls).
    2. Stick to plans in which there is no meter for usage above the limit (like ULD 1350)
    3. still you have to pay 1 month deposit for the BB plan + security deposit for the land line.
4.If you are scared of old nightmares (bills for calls not made),dis able STD+ ISD in the application itsef. You can make only locals .That is ok as you dont need BSNL land line (It is coming for the sake of BB)
5.I have heard you will get atleast 1 Mbps speed in that plan.

    Thanks
Do you mean that we get upto 4mbs till 20gb, and then 1mbps after that?> (in other words ~400kbps and then ~125 respectively?)
Also how would the reliability be? back then (5-6 years ago) the BSNL dial up worked around 1 hour a day.... Tata indicom now is working almost all the time.... but 16kbps is pretty slow

Though BSNL advertise 4 Mbps, not everyone seems lucky enough to get it. There are lots of complaints in this forum regarding the slow speed in ULD 1350 even before the FUP. It got solved for some after talking to the exchange and lifting the speed cap on their connection. But it is wise not to expect more than 2 Mbps. Even then, it is a good bargain.

Nobody can predict the line condition. Hoping that the line condition has improved over years, you can give it a try. If possible, check with someone who is already using broadband in your city.

    k. thanks
only 5-10 people here have BB and i dont even know who....
btw will it be easy to set up the bnsl bb with a router?
I have a Belkin F7D2301 V1 (i think its called belkin surf or something)

In delhi my friend has a MTNL connection. What i did is plugged the ethernet wire from his MTNL modem to my router and set up i copied the ip address/dns etc from his computer. that worked
could i do the same with bsnl?

You can check with line man or someone helpful at exchange to get an idea about the line condition. You can surely copy the setting of MTNL. The only change is to remove VPI/VCI of MTNL and add 0_35 of BSNL. Also do change the ID and password.

It is unwise to use a modem/router that is not supplied from BSNL. But the problem is BSNL people won't support 3rd party devices. If there is any issue in the line and even if it has nothing to do with the modem, they will blame the modem for the problem and make us wait infinitely.

    ill ask
Back at my friends house he has a MTNL BB connection. Telephone Line ---> Modem ---> Modem has USB, and Ethernet ports in back ---> Ethernet cable to computer --> In computer you manually enter ip address and dns.

    All i did:
Telephone Line ---> Modem ---> Modem has USB, and Ethernet ports in back ---> Ethernet cable to my router --> In 192.168.2.1 i set the internet connection settings to the ip's and stuff that i copied from his computer..
So in other words USING the modem... Not plugging the phone line into the router!!!!
Modem connects to internet and AFTER that it sends internet to the router....
    would this work with bsnl?
