Default type 3 modem as vpn server?

    hi guys,
i have an office with a couple of pc's and a network printer. So far i have been using windows vpn server and client for VPN which works perfectly fine..

I've come to know that wifi routers can also be used as vpn servers (via IPSec), this will solve my difficulty of having a PC on at all times in the office and directly use the printer.

i tried to figure out setting it up on the router, but was a bouncer, anyone knows/has set it up before?

    >>type3 modem, dynamic IP address hence dynamic dns service.
    >>>router to act as vpn server.

Are you using the Printer in wifi mode in your office ?
    Mention make/model/number.
Mention the type III modem/wifi router details as , above.

Try in SEARCH above VPN server for old thread/s of this forum by members.

    Printer: Hp Laserjet m1213nf MFP
connected via LAN/CAT6. not wifi.. printer doesnt support wifi :'(

i've upgraded the firmware on the router and now it doesnt state the make n model, i shall update the model no. when i get to the office. however it's a white and blue UTstarcom wifi modem, very common. cheap built quality. the router does provide support for dynamic dns updating, NAT and IPsec.

I did try searching if anyone has posted a thread on the same, however i only see threads for vpn servers as pc's. none as routers.

    EDIT: It's a wa3002g4 wifi modem

Presume at Home you use wa 3002-g4 to office VPN.
(Firmware version and upgrade link please for records )

Confirm set up in office like this.
Once you log in, I feel Printer ( in office) should get the command to print from Home.

    Not familiar with VPN setup.

    actually couple of corrections..

    * i use wa3002g4 at office, at home i use cable net and a wndr3700. (port forwarding done on both routers)
    * I can print to my office computer now also via vpn. but in order to do that i have to connect to a pc in office via vpn and then give command.
    * the diagram is a simple lan arrangement, didnt infer ur context via that, my home network goes through two access points and a router which is already setup.

***what i am looking for is actually to use a wa3002g4 as a vpn server instead of a pc in the office. this ways i dont have to rely on a pc being switched on at all times in the office.***

    use a wa3002g4 as a vpn server i.....
    NO IDEA.

can you make out any thing ???!!!
    From Google search :
You may select “File and printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks” option in Networking tab of VPN connection properties on PC1 first. after that install shared printer on server so that all other computers where in LAN could access it .

Modem/router working as a VPN server. No idea.
what your telling me is a system i already use. printer shared. print via lan. vpn connection print on shared printer.
however all this involves a pc. i want to remove that from the picture.

a network printer is directly connected to lan, not to a specific computer. thereby removing printer sharing from picture. in a normal lan connection print command directly goes to the printer and not via a pc on which a printer is usually involved..

instead of using a pc as a vpn server i intend to use a router as the server, it is possible, has something to do with ipsec. my router provides tht functionality too, just i cant figure how to set ipsec up.

I am not familiar with VPN setup..
    Unable to help further.

    Summary :
Modem/Router to work as VPN server
to control printer in Remote location via VPN network
    .
IP sec settings: in most modems not available.
    Will check and update later..
If the VPN server is behind a router, Port Mapping will
need to be done on the router. Standard port usage is
1723 for PPTP. You might also need to configure your
router for PPTP Passthrough. Port usage for IPSec is
500, 50-51. These ports will have to be forwarded to
    the VPN server's IP
