Question Should I opt for plan 500 or ul 900 in dataone

Here is the thing, I had been a dataone user since about September 2005. I was using Home 250, then shifted to Home 500 cause my data usage went as far as 2.4 gb in Home 250 when it was limited to 400 mb free usage. Then when UL 900 came, I shifted to it in May 2005 with an annual payment of Rs. 9000. Since that phase is coming to an end, I am thinking of what to do now! The speed of Home 500 is upto 2mbps where UL 900 is still 256 kbps. I also think BSNL has no plans to increase it's speed but what if it does? I guess the best thing for me would be to change my plan to Home 500 without annual payment and wait till something gets done.

    Pros for HOME 500:

    (a) Speed
    (b) Cheaper

    Cons for HOME 500:

    (a) Chargeable data usage after 2.5 GB.
    (b) Password theft can lead to massive billing.

    Pros for UL 900:

    (a) Unlimited data usage.
    (b) Password theft no problem.

    Cons for UL 900:

    (a) Speed
    (b) Costlier than HOME 500.

I'd suggest to go for UL 900 (plus) plan as data limit
appears to be a big problem for you . However if you
are interested in home500 plan then it can be made
secured by using a strong password ...

^ as you said in earlier post , speed limitation is a problem
for UL900 plans users . And speed has been upgraded for
home 500 plan users but it can be a bit difficult to download
huge files during the free time only (2 AM - 8 AM) ...

home 500 is ne time better than UL900 .. if u need to d/l something .. just schedule da download to take place in 2am - 8am
tats wat i do .. my comp automatically shuts down at 8.. so no hassles
    nd even if u d/l at a max speed of 30kBps[UL900] .. u wud just get a meagre amt of 3gbs in 24 hrs .. as compared to ~4.2GBs in 6hrs[HOME 500]
    da decision is upto u!!

I will suggest Home 500 too. Use a scheduler to reboot your modem at 2. Download manager or Torrent client can be scheduled between 2 and 8.

You can use telenet script to reboot the modem exactly at 2.

ya, i wud suggest to opt for home 500 as although ul-900 has no data limit but its slower.
Or u can opt for UL-900 and hack ur bsnl exchange to get higher speed.
This is so easy to be done. just download the image file from ur bsnl server...oops sorry..i shudnt discuss hacking tricks here otherwise i may be BANNED.

What ever made you download an entire OS? You are much better off buying it directly from Microsoft. You can pay online and the DVD is sent from Singapore directly to your home. I did that in the past.

Default Home 500 or UL 900?

By now you must be pretty clear on wht you do most. If I were you and a heavy downloader then I would go for UL900 inspite of the speed restrictions. On the other hand if my downloads are low then I would prefer speeds any day. As suggested by other posters, you can get best of both worlds by installing download manger and automatic router booting after 2 PM and before 8 AM.

Regardless of all the pros and cons the best plan to go for in bsnl would be the unlimited plan one and only reason is because you will get lots and lots of wrong billing with the limited ones like 250 and 500 plan. The best way to avoid is to pay a bit extra and go for the unlimited plan but speed is an issue here but 256 is also very less compared to previously where we used to get less than 64 kbps. I have been using unlimited only the speed is not as slow as one way but quite decent that you will not notice it.

what xwhyz said is true.even with a unlimited 900 plan you can download aroung 60-65gb a month.also you will never have to worry about getting a huge bill either because of your fault or BSNL's.if you intend to download 100gb a month & don't want to keep your computer on for 20-22hrs a day only then you should go for a home500 plan.

you can easily download 100-120mb in one hour with a 256kbps connection so you will take around 30hrs or maybe less to download vista 64 bit.also just a suggestion but vista 64 bit is very poor in terms of driver support.also you are not going to get any major advantage compared to 32 bit as very low no. of applications fully support 64 bit natively.

Many people have compalined about arbitrary billing. I would say that you play it safe and go for UL 900 plan.

If you have a limited data transfer connection and your user id and password gets stolen then some one can use up your usage allowance and you get the bill for that but this is only possible in those exchanges which still don't have port binding in place.
