Question QoS for VOIP customers... whos got it?

Anyone out there know if the broadband services available in this area ready for VOIP comunications.. inparticular, does anyone offer Quality of Service over their connections?

    Thanx

You can use VOIP using any isp's internet connection as long as the speed allows it.I have used skype and stanaphone with great success using a 64kbps sify connection and if you have a 256kbps connection from any isp I would imagine you will never experience any lag while using voip.

I'm using skype myself - although with a PC mic and speakers (cause skype wont ship accessories to India) and lemme tell you that there is almost no lag at all. I mean 99% of my calls have no lag and once in a while I have a tiny lag of less than a second.

I'm currently testing other voip projects like yahoo voice and gizmo project to check the QoS (frankly for the reason that these providers provide cheaper call out rates). Mostly the quality is comparable to skype although I do get a bit of lag - I'm not sure at present whether it is due to the connection or the network used by the voip application

You dont need to get skype headphones, You can just go to any computers shop and buy one there and the good ones are Rs700 upwards.

Yeah I know I dont need skype headphones. But I'm shifting base to USA this august and my parents aren't very tech savvy (In fact they hardly use the PC). So I was looking for a skype phone which does not require a PC

Talking Well thats good to know... but

Thanks for the reply folks, Im glad to know that you are sucessfully useing VOIP. The QOS Standard is based on the actual data packets in that are sent once the router converts the voice to data. See standard Data can accrue small amounts of packet loss as it travels accross the internet... however those datapackets are resent via some nifty stuff built into the TCP/IP protocall that makes it recheck and compare the received data. However.. Voip is time sensitive and therfore cannot suffer that packet loss and wait for the network to recover it serveral naoseconds later... so... when a network provider can guarentee Quality of Service -QoS over there network this means that they are capable (have the right equipment deployed) of segmenting a certain amount of bandwidth for VOIP comunications and have routers that shape packet data in a specific way.

That said... an ISP does not have to have QoS for Voip to werk.. but it is the difference between it "can work" and it "will work". And when we sell solutions to our customers its gotta be "will work".

Thank you for your help though,
    Ozyus
