Default Modem/Router for my New BSNL connection

I want to take new BSNL BB 750 UL Home plan for my holidays and i have a doubt regarding the modem selection. Basically i dont know anything about this modem/router stuff.

I want to buy the modem/router from BSNL or from outside. I want one with wireless connectivity. Upon viewing the price list of modems from BSNL website i find that for the same price i can get an Asus WL-520gU which has support for lot of custom firmwares. I do a lot of downloading and i got to know from the forum that it can be used it as a torrent downloader too.

Can this Asus WL-520gU be used instead of the modem BSNL provides.

Sorry if my framing is wrong.

Take on rent a type II wifi adslmodem+4lanport+wifi router.
Asus model wifi router needs additional ADSL modem.

can i flash it with custom firmware if available?
In my opinion, beyond your scope/knowledge.
Check Technical specifications of any model you intend to buy.

You can get a basic ADSL modem or wifi router on rent from bsnl
    and check performance.
Buy later WL520gU for your needs.
If you have OS Windows 7
try "connectify" application in one laptop.
Laptop will work as AP ( access point within Range )
Even ASU wifi router. may not be needed.

Many users download torrents using (software) download Managers.
    2.
Flashing Firmware voids manufacturer's warranty. ( other than from
    company's web sites)

    connectify!!! Hell no..

i used connectify in my college on my laptop and it crashed my laptop whenever i connected my 3G USB Modem. I was worried first and when i posted the minidump files in microsoft answers forum they said that connectify driver was causing the crash.

i uninstalled it and it laptop is working fine now.

No 3G at my home so BB.

As for asus routers they come with firmware restoration utility so no chance of voiding warranty

    Regarding "connectify"
    Connectify Support :: Knowledge Base
The problem you have reported may be included.

    Firmware upgrade.
When you use dd_wrt or tomato etc , restoring original FW
    could create problems.
Any FW update from company's website , you are right.

    Para two:
    See this thread,

and see how member/users give feedback.
    LINUX vs Windows
    WindowsXP vs Windows 7
    IE6 Vs IE9 vs FF etc !!!
    possible /Not possible
    Proved/ Not proved !!!
Finally problem appears to have been solved.!!

^really informative post. i am planning to do what you suggested, take one on rent from bsnl and test the performance and go for a router.

All that is bothering me is the laptop battery if i put big files for download.

Cant use netbook as its my dad's.

Hi.. I was also searching for a similar kind of solution when I came across this thread...I have decided to buy Asus Wireless Router WL-520GU for BSNL connection. ADSL modem will be provided by BSNL so a stand alone router such as this seems perfect. Also can be used as a downloading rig.

Has anyone used it yet. Its available to eBay for some 1900 Rs.
