    Default Link goes off !!

    Can any of my friends help me out?
    The problem is as follows:
    Introduction: I use Sterlite MT882 router. It is since the lousy ISP started off the connection that I don't ever get a steady link for 4 hours, uninterrupted. The link goes off and comes in two minutes. I didn't use lan card, I thought a lan card would be solving that.

    LAN card introduced: I bought a lan card and set the adsl modulation G.dmt
    The link came within a minute on turning on the modem and I was delighted.
    But the original problem remained.

    Interaction with helpline: I called the help line and pleaded, implored, begged at their feet "please solve the problem".
    I rang up the Divisional Engineers and the other officers, as well, and implored with the same fervour.
    The told me "the line is clear always, we have tested more than once."
    I asked, "can there be any problem with the modem"?
    They answered "no, of course not".

    =============
    Now a days I can not work for 10 minutes uninterrupted. The link goes off every five minutes on average. Terrible performance.

    Please advise.

    While the lousy BSNL men can only harm me and never help a bit, I believe it is you that would help me out.

    ^ pls connect your modem in bridge mode , use LAN port ;
    and use a sw dialer {win xp has inbuilt dialer} to connect .

    if you still face the problem then phone line has to be checked
    for earthing / leaking problem . and also modem can be faulty .

    I am presently connecting through ppp. If I have to connect through bridge, I suppose I may have to change some settings. Could you please instruct me on that concern?
    What did you mean by "sw" dialer, BTW?

    ^ you have to log into the modem and change it from
    PPPoE to bridge mode ; save the settings into modem ;
    and use win xp's dialer to connect to the net . if you
    are using any other OS then you will need a dialer sw
    ( like raspppoe dialer )

    pls follow some steps ..what people are telling you to do is fine ..but it depends..why dont you do some step by step checking..
    1. Line ( SNR,Attenuation values , splitter, disconnect all the device from line for testing.. )
    2. Lan Card setting (properties-advanced- power off .. etc..)
    3. modem function & configuration ..
    you can go by using PPOeE ( Usename password in modem )
    enable DHCP and NAT...
    and observe it ..

    Hello Saurav. I must say I am facing the same problem as you are. This happened since I took the connection for the first time well back in November last year. My modem (MT841) always had this problem of disappearing link. The agony that you faced with the officials of the BSNL staffs were also common to me. Had to get some sources involved to fix the thing.
    Since then things were going well till last week when the same problem of link going off frequently (in a span of 2 minutes) started. I am now absolutely clueless as I know it is no use to lodge a complaint to there so called customer care services, and same goes with the BSNL officials, now please tell me what is the alternative that you are looking for or you have already managed to find a solution to the said problem so that I also can be helped.

    I think this is a Huawei modem software problem. I know someone who was also having the same problem. He went ahead and changed his modem. Now, you can ask for a DataGlobal Modem from BSNL, if that is available in your area. It works better than the Huawei ones.

    Indra, it is very very mysterious.
    I have been on my computer since 6:30 pm, with ppp wan connection, and as is expected, with the problem of disappearing link!
    But I now changed the connection (WAN settings) to bridge mode and running for 8 minutes without the link going off (think what the problem is; it is not supposed to stay for 8 minutes uninterrupted!!!).

    If it is the case that it is okay with bridge mode but problematic with ppp mode, then what do you advise me to do? I am now on windows xp, but on linux, I apprehend I will not be able to use the modem in bridge mode.

    What do you advise, mate?

    I am not sure. BSNL recommends you use PPPoE, because their infrastructure is based on PPPoE Service Delivery. Refer to http://www.uttaranchal.bsnl.co.in/dataonehelp.pdf

    Also ensure that you are using splitter as shown in the document.

    8 minutes is not long. I have seen these problems cropping up after 10 minutes or 20 minutes sometimes.

    hai friend..me too have got the same problem...the connection was ok for some 15 days..Now my link goes off every 2 mins..sometime lasts for hrs..sometime it goes off every 20 mins.it is not a problem with modem i guess..i talked with the bsnl personal after making hell lot of attempts to explain my prob..now they have told that there's problem with the cable and they have promised to change it on monday..have u resolved ypur problem..if u have got any solution please let me know..

    You are right, Indra. 8mins were not enough.
    Yesterday night it was making much problems, link didn't stay for half minute. I changed my routing mode to "purebridge" and saved and rebooted. The problem remained.
    So it proves that the problem is with the modem, isn't it?

    That is no argument that the bsnl's lousy people said that the modem is okay!
    I rang them up not less than two times a month; and each time I said that the modem may have had something wrong with it, they said "no no, it is a cable fault, we will surely mend it up. Don't worry....."
    Hell fall on their pretentious behaviour!

    But the more I probed into the problem, the more appealing becomes the idea that the problem might have been with the modem.
    There is another type of modem, ie, else than Huawei. It is called "Dare Global". Better you ask your cable operator to give that to you, at least for one month for checking (I know if I ask them to do it for me, they will surely cut my phone line as a punishment) and tell me what happens.

    Post hello saurav-link goes off solved

    hai...
    just now bsnl persons just now replaced the cable...and for about 30 mins..the link is stabilized without any problem..it looks like my problem is solved..will get back when i feel my problem is resolved completely...

    Please try to download a heavy thing that does NOT support resume and needs at least 3 hours to be downloaded.
    If it is okay, we will be sure that the problem is solved.
    How could you have got them replace it? Had you launched a police case against them or something like that?

    No my friend....i did'nt go that far...exchange is near my house just 2mins drive...i went atleast four times a day..registered complaint twice a day and rang up what ever number i got...to complain...and this continued for atleast three days agressively and i started to inform them of my problem a week back..and they came up twice to check..they are only linemen..they will come check the line and say phone is wrkin properly,and u have good signal too..some lady will call back from exchange and say u'r internet connection is up..i told my internet connection does not last longer..it will soon go off.,she will tell call the customer care only they check beyond this..and the person in the customer care says u call up u'r local exchange..i got screwed so much...i spent almost all the day in exchange yesterday to meet JE..
    now they have responded and changed my line..see my line did'nt get discopnnected till now..
    and i cant check downloading a huge file this month,i already exceeded my free download limit and its around 600 mb excess...will let u know next month...ie tomorrow...

    Oh my friend, how sorry one is when one moves from the exchange and the customer care and is screwed too much, as we are!
    My problem is, to explain it frankly, I have to deal with two exchanges. One is local (20 -30 mins) and the other, far (>1hour). If I ask the dreary fiends of the local one, they switch me either to the customer care, or to the far exchange, or else they ask me to submit a written complaint, without mentioning to whom I've to write it.
    My father went few time to the far exchange, where he was abused and treated without respect. He was a class one gazetted officer, he didn't tolerate this and decided not to speak with them. Whenever I plea to them by phone they give one phone number, of which the respondent gives another. The thing is like that x_1 gives the number of x_2. Inductively, x_n gives the number of x_{n+1}. So the matter is an unending sequence!!
    Now as you've said, I'll have to run physically from one exchange to another. But I have to sit for my exams 13th and 20th July and the burden of talking with the bsnl men is too much.

    Don't worry saurav..and all the best for u'r exams..Ask them to check u'r telephone line...there may be fault in it..check for any noise in u'r phone line...If its there sure u will get this problem..Je in my exchange told that if there is noise in phone line then u will get this problem..Which state are u residing in..i dont know how the employee's pay attention to customers thr..

    Thanks for the response from you. I live in West Bengal. The employees don't at all pay attention to their customers. Yes I do get noise in my phone line sometimes, but not always.

    But facing the same problem ie link goes off in 5 min or so..
    I complained the "customer care(?)" of BSNL. Two line man came and checked the line and said that its ok..
    The problem is that link remains steady for 5 6 hrs and then the same "natak"
    starts..
    I m really fed up off all this and changed my plan from UL 900 to 500 . Why pay 1000 when you cant even surf 2-3 hours even in a day ..

    Good shot! Now, do you see any improvement with 500 plan? How's the speed, by the way?

    well, somehow , I accessed my modem's configuration page 192.168.1.1 and changed my password from default admin..
    from thn the link is steady...
    I cant but think that some BSNL guys were robbing me of my bandwidth...hence weaker adsl link....
    you can also try ..
    speeds i am getting are ranging from 700 kbps to 1.5 mbps..
    I ve nt used splitter .....directly connected from the main line where it enters the house ...to my room ..I ve used about 65 feet of cable....

    hello abhi i had the same problem..my link goes off often sometimes its stable for hrs and sometimes it goes down every 2hrs..and my problem got solved after i asked them to replace my telephone cable.the bsnl employees kept on saying this and that and i doubted the problem is due to fault in the cable line..and now every thing is fine..

    I doubt I've really understood what you really did; the default password is ``admin", but is there any way to change it? And by using the default password can it be ever possible to exploit the bandwidth? I accessed the page 192.168.1.1 and went to the ``administration settings'' section; but the encrypted password seemed to be far longer than ``admin''.
    Could you explain what (and how) you actually did?
