UPnP works really well with multiple devices that switch from wired to wireless mode and with dynamic IP's (Internet Protocol)

UPnP is good to ensure good connectivity. In fact, it’s a feature of UPnP to allow all applications that are uPnP compliant to open ports directly on network devices without notice, warning or notification.
For users who don’t want automatic UPnP manipulation behavior of other programs can disable UPnP on the networked devices.

    From Google search : UPnP

if a software supports upnp(e.g.uTorrent) & you have enabled upnp in your modem/router then you won't have to manually setup port forwarding in modem/router.

For security reasons, it's always wise to disable UPnP and open ports manually in all scenarios if you are technically competent.
