Default Internet stops working when I open utorrent

The moment I open utorrent my connection takes a nose dive - everything becomes very slow and i keep getting packet drops.

I have 1 torrent running and it's downloading at 10kbps and uploading at 5kbps.

It feels as though my connection is getting choked.

Here is my snr/atten from my modem config page:
    Code:
    Vendor ID: 0039
    Revision Number: E.37.9.48
    Serial Number: 123456789abcdx
    Local Tx Power: 10.1 dB
    Remote Tx Power: 18.5 dB
    Local Line Atten.: 19.0 dB
    Remote Line Atten.: 7.0 dB
    Local SNR Margin: 34.0 dB
    Remote SNR Margin: 12.5 dB
    Self Test: Passed
    DSL Standard: ADSL2+
    Profile: MII
    Tx Line Rate: 133 Kbps
    Rx Line Rate: 4365 Kbps
Max Attainable Line Rate(Down Stream): 3690 Kbps
Here's what I see without utorrent on:
    Code:

i also checked modem settings at this time:
    Code:
    Vendor ID: 0039

    Tx Line Rate: 133 Kbps
    Rx Line Rate: 4365 Kbps
Max Attainable Line Rate(Down Stream): 3690 Kbps
I am not seeing this problem when I stream a youtube video or listen to an audio stream but it always happens when utorrent is on.

Not happening when I download a file normally from a website (i.e. not using torrent).

    more info :

    OS - windows 7
    modem - glb 802C
bsnl plan - home 1000 (basically home 500 with 5gb dl limit)
    cpu - core i5 2500k

    1. Reinstall utorrent and check.

    2. Disable your firewall/antivirus and check.

    tried both, no change.

I lowered the number of connections utorrent makes (to 25 from 50), lowered the download max to 175 kbps and lowered upload max to 5 kbps.

This somewhat reduced the packet loss but it's still there along with the stupid latency increase. Torrrent speeds that were easily 200-215kbps day before yesterday are now not more than 75kbps and not only that, my internet connection is completely choked.

Not sure if related by even when utorrent is off; there is steady 5-10% packet loss; or 1 or 2 packet drops every 1-2 minutes.

On a side note there is no noise on my phone, the linemen have checked wires multiple times and on the same modem i run an airtel connection which has little or no packet loss.

    Try Vuze and check.

May be some temporary problem with the line. Wait for a day or two and check.

If possible, get another modem and check. May be some error in modem configuration.

I think something changed on BSNL's end but these settings improved the massive latency spikes:

    global max # connections - 60
max # of connected peers per torrent 25
    max dl speed 180
    max ul speed 5

    disable UPnP port mapping
    disable NAT-PmP port mapping.

Does anyone have a good settings.dat file for utorrent or a list of good settings for indian narrowband (lol) connections ?

did bsnl lower the max number of connections ?

    Unhappy utorrent

    @roosha_kol
Hi, Same problem for me!! when i use utorrent i am not able to browse thru webpages for the past week onwards but usually i do (for the past 3 months i am using broadband-BSNL Home Combo 500).
now as suggested by you i changed the utorrent settings its better now but my utorrent files are downloading too slow i think now it will take one week to download the file! kindly provide me any either solution and suggest whether for the past one week bsnl has reduced its speed limits

i am also using utorrent and it is giving full speed. If you are using Utorrent 2.2.1 then upgrade it to 3.0. It also supports Video streaming

1.May be some error at exchange, will get cured automatically.

    2. At what speed utorrent is downloading ? Limit the speed so that there is enough bandwidth left for other apps too.

    3. Disable Firewall/antivirus and check.

    4. Do you see a green tick at the bottom of utorrent ? Make sure that the ports are open.

    5. Which mode do you use ? PPPoE or Bridge ?

the more connections you made per torrent more will be the overhead.install a bandwidth monitoring application like networx & move cursor on its icon in system tray to see what is the actual upload rate.e.g.i usually download 2 torrents in utorrent with ~200KBps with upload speed set to 25KBps & networx show upload as ~40KBps which includes overhead for both upload as well as download.it is my suggestion to set upload speed to ~25KBps because as you increase it there will be a reduction in download speed(at least for my home 500 connection with upload speed at 0.41mbps according to various speedtests).

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

    1. Type 192.168.1.1 in your browser.

    2. Enter ID and password as admin.

    3. In the LHS menu of landing page, look for WAN/Internet connection tab.

    4. Select the 0/35 entry and click " edit ".

    5. In this, you will find an option to switch between bridge and PPPoE. Select bridge and save.

    6. Reboot the modem. Once finished, create a new dialer from control panel, enter ID and password in it and then click " Connect ".

PS : Take a back up of the working modem setting before attempting these changes. You can later restore the saved settings if anything goes wrong.
